Data collected from acute 96-hour and chronic 28-day toxicity tests of Aluminum to a commonly tested unionid mussel (Lampsilis siliquoidea) and a commonly tested amphipod (Hyalella azteca) at a pH of 6 and water hardness of 100 mg/L as CaCO3.

Description of Work Determine the relative sensitivity of two species of amphibians (i.e. Wood Frogs Rana sylvatica, Cricket Frogs Acris crepitans blanchardi, American Toad Bufo americana) to exposure to acute and chronic levels of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. This data will be used to evaluate the current ammonia criteria and for possible inclusion in the development of criteria for nitrite and nitrate.

Description of Work The work completed for this template will provide the following information: 1) Generate acute and chronic toxicity data for freshwater mussels and snails to enhance the protection of listed/endangered species in the GL basin; 2) Refine methods and conduct acute and chronic toxicity tests on amphibians; 3) Develop and test methods for conducting chronic toxicity tests for mayflies.

The objectives of the present study were to develop methods for propagating western pearlshell (Margaritifera falcata) for laboratory toxicity testing and evaluate acute and chronic toxicity of chromium VI [Cr (VI)] to the pearlshell and a commonly tested mussel (fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea at 20°C or in association with a co-stressor of elevated temperature (27°C), zinc (50 µg Zn/L), or nitrate (35 mg NO3/L). A commonly tested invertebrate (amphipod, Hyalella azteca) was also tested in chronic exposures.

This SSP project resulted in a final report and one publication. Toxicity tests were conducted at the U.S. Geological Survey Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC), Columbia, Missouri to determine the effects of sediments from impacted (historic coal mining or gas well activities) and un-impacted (these activities did not occur) river sites on growth and mortality of 2 mo old rainbow mussels (Villosa iris). Tissue from surviving juveniles from one replicate (n = 1) of each of the sediment exposures were histologically processed and qualitatively evaluated to determine sub-lethal effects on their organ and visceral tissues. Many tissues were improperly embedded, but re-embedding allowed most tissues to be...
