This file contains site identification information of streamgages and paired wells to the streamgages operated by the U.S. Geological Survey in the State of Mississippi and within the Mississippi Alluvial Plain to monitor shallow groundwater conditions and aid in understanding the interaction between groundwater and surface water. Useful background on pairing groundwater and surface-water monitoring is provided by Constantz and others (2012). Differing scientific purposes of modeling or statistical studies could benefit from the identification of these sites for isolation or removal from comprehensive groundwater-level data projects for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer.

This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. For Texas, data were obtained from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) from both existing Groundwater Availability Models (GAM), and from historical groundwater-withdrawal data....

Monthly rollup of the discrete and daily-aligned groundwater levels were created from Robinson, Asquith, and Seanor (2020) data products with removal of the paired groundwater and surface-water sites listed by Robinson, Killian, and Asquith (2020). The monthly rollup is composed of (1) computed monthly "mean" values regardless of whether a well had one measurement in the month or up to about 30 days of daily-mean values, (2) standard deviation of the water levels within the month (sample size is generally just one day but for recorder sites could be up to about 30 days), (3) the last water level in the month, and (4) monthly counts of water levels. Groundwater-level data, in conjunction with attendant metadata and covariates (predictor variables) data, for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA) are used to support statistical and process-based numerical modeling. This page represents a collection of groundwater-level data within the expanse of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) (Painter and Westerman, 2018) and are derived from well-specific periods of record of discrete measurements and continuous water levels aggregated to daily statistics. The basic data structures are intended also to serve as interpretability standards for use by statistical software such as described by Asquith and Seanor (2019) and Asquith and others (2019).

Censored and uncensored generalized additive models (GAMs) are developed from 955 U.S. Geological Survey streamflow-gaging stations (streamgages) to predict decadal statistics of streamflow. The streamgages are located on streams draining to the Gulf of Mexico. Decadal statistics include no-flow fractions and selected L-moments of nonzero streamflow for six decades (1950s—2000s). These statistics represent metrics of decadal flow-duration curves (dFDCs) derived from about 10 million daily mean streamflows. The L-moments include the mean, coefficient of L-variation, and the third through fifth L-moment ratios. The models are fit using watershed properties such as basin area and slope, decadal precipitation and temperature...
A combination of discrete and daily-aligned groundwater levels for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer clipped to the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, as defined by Painter and Westerman (2018), with corresponding metadata are based on processing of U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS) (U.S. Geological Survey, 2020) data. The processing was made after retrieval using aggregation and filtering through the infoGW2visGWDB software (Asquith and Seanor, 2019). Since 1975, annual water use for Louisiana has been published on a 5-year basis and is used for a variety of purposes. As the Sparta aquifer is a heavily used aquifer, is the sole source of groundwater for many parishes in Louisiana, and recent withdrawals have exceeded the Sparta’s natural recharge, a more frequent compilation of water usage for the Sparta aquifer in Louisiana is needed to inform State conservation groups and efforts, private and public entities, and to feed groundwater models.
