The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Department of Energy, University of Montana, Northern Arapaho Tribe, and Liverpool John Moores University, is studying the interaction of a contaminated groundwater plume enriched in uranium and other trace elements with water, sediment, and biota along a 3 km reach of the Little Wind River in central Wyoming. The source of the contaminants is from a reclaimed uranium mill site near Riverton, Wyoming. This Data Release makes available data collected from June to September, 2016 and August to September, 2017. Data collected during these time periods include: (1) radon, major-ion, and trace-element concentrations in surface-water, groundwater, and pore-water samples;...

IMPORTANT NOTE: Data and supporting information from samples collected during 2015-16 can be can be accessed from this link. The U.S. Geological Survey is studying Lake Koocanusa, a border reservoir between British Columbia in Canada and Montana, in collaboration with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 8). This work is part of a multi-agency project to apply an ecosystem-scale selenium modeling methodology (Presser and Luoma, 2010) to the lake to support development of site-specific selenium guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. A conceptual model framework was published in 2017 (Jenni, Naftz, and Presser, 2017) to serve as a coherent and...

IMPORTANT NOTE: An updated version that contains data from samples collected during 2017 can be accessed from this link. The U.S. Geological Survey is studying Lake Koocanusa, a border reservoir between British Columbia in Canada and Montana, in collaboration with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 8). This work is part of a multi-agency project to apply an ecosystem-scale selenium modeling methodology (Presser and Luoma, 2010) to the lake to support development of a site-specific selenium guideline for the protection of aquatic life. This Data Release makes available measurements taken during the periods of May, 2015 to October, 2015 and April,...

This dataset includes the field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, seston, fish tissue, and sediment samples collected from Bighorn Lake, within Bighorn Canyon National Recreation area (BICA), during high flow (July 2015) and low flow (August 2016) conditions. The study area includes 7-9 sampling sites that follow a transect spanning the entire length of the reservoir from the Bighorn and Shoshone River inflows to the afterbay and tailwater below Yellowtail dam. Multiple samples were collected at each sampling site and usually included the top 2 cm of sediment at the sediment/water interface, 2 meters above the sediment/water interface, and 2 meters below the reservoir surface. Microbial samples...

Two Saphymo AlphaE radon (Rn) detectors, with a measurement range of 0.54 picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L) to 270 nanoCuries per liter of air (nCi/L), were deployed from October 2015 thru May 2016 in publicly accessible areas adjacent to the Pinenut uranium mine located in northern Arizona. One monitor was installed in close proximity to the mine vent and a second monitor was installed in close proximity to the ore pile. In late December 2015, a third AlphaE Rn detector was deployed adjacent to the ore-pile monitor. Measurement frequency was 3 times per hour and a time-lapse camera was installed in close proximity to the ore pile to record relative size and activity of the ore pile during mining and early reclamation....
