Pebble counts were performed to assess the bed surface grain size distribution at five delineated mussel habitats in the Big River, Missouri. These data were collected in support of research assessing the mussel communities and characteristics of freshwater mussel habitats in the Big River (Albers and others, 2016; Roberts and others, 2016). Pebble counts were performed at the mussel habitats following the methods of Wolman (1954). Grain diameters of 99-100 particles were measured on the intermediate axis. The pebble count data are semi-continuous; grains smaller than 2 mm were classified as sand, and grains larger than 64 mm were classified as either cobble (65-256 mm) or boulder (greater than 256 mm) but measured...
The data release includes data from four studies: (1) toxicity of a permitted effluent, which entered the Deep Fork River (DFR), Oklahoma, USA, to a unionid mussel (Lampsilis siliquoidea) and to 2 standard test species (cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia; and fathead minnow Pimephales promelas) in short-term 7-d effluent tests; (2) relative sensitivities of the 3 species to potassium (K), an elevated major ion in the effluent, using 7-d toxicity tests with KCl spiked into a DFR upstream reference water; (3) potential influences of background water characteristics on the acute K toxicity to the mussel (96-h exposures) and cladoceran (48-h exposure) in 4 reconstituted waters that mimicked the hardness and ionic composition...
These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), carbon, and particle size determination in Canyon Mine containment pond sediment samples collected in calendar year 2019.
An inventory (enumeration and taxonomic identification) of diet items consumed by wild-caught black carp, based on the examination of gut contents from fish that were collected in the lower Mississippi River drainage of the U.S.
In this experimental series we studied the swimming capabilities and response of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) larvae to flow turbulence in a laboratory flume. We compared three different experimental configurations, representing in-stream obstructions commonly found in natural streams (e.g. a gravel bump, a single vertical cylinder, and patches of submerged rigid vegetation). Grass carp larvae (post gas bladder emergence) were introduce to each experimental configuration and subjected to a variety of hydrodynamic forces of different magnitudes and scales. We varied the flow velocities and water depths and found threshold values of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses that triggered an apparent...
The data describe the technical performance of a designed qPCR assay for the detection of mucket (Actinonaias ligamentina) eDNA from field collected water samples. Parameters described include the sequences of the primers and probes used; the limit of detection and limit of quantification for the assay; a list of freshwater mussels species that were used to test specificity of the assay; and in situ field samples that were tested to the verify assay.
Data consist of geolocation, temperature, turbidity, time, and dye concentrations collected at four downstream locations from Rhodamine WT dye injection point on Yellowstone River in June 2017
These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.) in Pinyon Plain Mine containment pond invertebrate samples collected in calendar year 2021.
Results from a quantitative survey of mussel assemblages from 12 long-term monitoring sites over 153 river kilometers of the Buffalo National River 2019-2021.
This data set includes a point cloud, digital surface model (DSM), and orthoimagery of Lesley, Dudley, and Ainsley Islands at Palmyra Atoll, USA. Products were generated from aerial images collected in October 2016 using Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS, or "drones") with a Ricoh GRII digital camera. Imagery was processed using structure-from-motion photogrammetry that generates a three dimensional point cloud (.las) by identifying pixels from multiple images representing the same object and calculating the x, y, and z coordinates of that object/pixel. Point cloud data were processed to create a 6.5 cm resolution DSM (.tif) of the uppermost reflective surface (i.e., data have not been filtered for vegetation classes...
This data describes the relative luminescence units and relative fluorescence units of lysates of two estrogen responsive chemically-activated luciferase expression human breast VM7Luc4E2 and VM7LucERbc9 cells which were exposed for 24 hours to estrone and 17beta-estradiol dilutions alone and in mixture with atrazine or water extracts collected from dilutor tanks during a fish exposure study utilizing estrone and atrazine. The data for corresponding measurements of estrone in the water extracts by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry are also shown. This data also describes relative fluorescence units of bovine serum albumin standards which were used to convert the relative fluorescence units of the cell lysates...
Containment ponds at uranium mines in the Grand Canyon region have been suspected to pose an attractive nuisance to local wildlife in this arid landscape. To determine the presence of bird species at uranium mine openings, we surveyed the bird community in the area surrounding the mines repeatedly within one year and summarized species occurrence. We observed 35 species of birds directly using the uranium mine containment ponds including species of conservation concern, Pinyon Jay Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus and Brewer’s Sparrow Spizella breweri.

This dataset documents the number of normally developed hatched free embryos, abnormally developed hatched free embryos, and viable unhatched embryos from two laboratory trials (shovelnose sturgeon during April and pallid sturgeon during May 2016) in substrate conditions designed to simulate potential fates within a dynamic riverine environment. Trials were performed with substrate treatments that consisted of clean glass (control), gravel, medium-coarse sand, and fine sand-silt. Medium-coarse sand and fine sand-silt substrates were each tested three ways: unburied, partially buried, and fully buried (1–2 millimeter depth). Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon embryos were exposed to trial conditions from the...
This data release contains river bed surface grain size measurements, water-surface elevation measurements, and digital elevation models (DEMs) for select reaches of the Big River, Missouri. These data were collected in support of research assessing the hydraulic conditions of freshwater mussel habitat in the Big River. The individual metadata associated with each data type describe the process steps, data inputs and sources, and the locations where the data were collected.
The data set contains sampling data, catch data, and biological data associated with a broad-scale experiment to examine free embryo dispersal and larval settlement of endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. On 20190701, two age groups of pallid sturgeon including 771,707 1-day post-hatch (dph) free embryos and 200,786 5-dph free embryos were released in the Missouri River where dispersal in the water column was assessed through 150 miles. Following dispersal, beam trawl sampling of benthic habitats was conducted to verify settlement and quantify the spatial extent of settlement. Trawling was conducted for nine consecutive weeks from 20190716...

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were measured in the lower Ottawa River in 2009 before dredging and after dredging in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. Media collected for analysis included sediment, water, macroinvertebrates, and tetragnathid spiders at 18 stations. At each station 16 surface sediment core samples (top 15 cm) were collected and composited together with a mechanical mixer to achieve a homogeneous composite sample. Mid-depth water column samples were collected using a Van Dorn, Niskin or similar type sampler. Artificial substrate samplers (Hester Dendys) were used to collect aquatic macroinvertebrates. Riparian spiders (family Tetragnathidae) were collected from their webs by gloved hand...
