These data consist of larval fish and water profile data collected with a nearshore to offshore transect approach at 9 transects throughout Lake Huron. Larval fish and their stomach contents were identified, enumerated, and measured (if possible) using a dissecting microscope. These data were used to calculate densities of potential fish prey items (what is available in the environment) and compare that to what the fishes ate for selectivity analysis. Larval fish age estimation based on daily growth rings from otoliths was also conducted. These data are in raw form. The water profile data were collected using a bathythermograph and bin-averaged at the 1 m level. Environmental prey data are available at the following...
This is an antiquated version of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset that has been superseded by a more recent release. Unless visitors have a specific need for these archived data, they should return to the Main BBS Dataset Page and choose the most recent data release, as that one will include all BBS data released to date. The 1966-2021 North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset contains avian point count data for more than 700 North American bird taxa (species, races, and unidentified species groupings). These data are collected annually during the breeding season, primarily in June, along thousands of randomly established roadside survey routes in the United States and Canada. Routes...

This dataset consists of three datafiles: 1) vegetation, 2) abiotic factors, and 3) groundwater levels. Vegetation data were collected twice per month between July and September of 2019 and 2020. Data was collected by establishing 1m x 1m subplots within 12 5m-radius sampling plots distributed across the management units of Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Subplots were established to represent plot-level vegetation structure and facilitate estimates of rare plant relative abundance. The abiotic factors dataset includes observations of surface soil moisture, salinity, groundwater quality data, and rare plant presence taken weekly between March – October 2019 and May – October 2020 at each established plot within...

The U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) measured environmental contaminants in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) to evaluate dietary exposure to lead, mercury, and anticoagulant rodenticides (AR), which was identified by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as a priority issue of concern for the Mountain Prairie Region 6. Carcasses of bald eagles (n = 172) and golden eagles (n = 142) collected from North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas between 2014-2017 were assessed for cause of death and liver lead, mercury, and AR levels. Trauma, electrocution, and lead poisoning were the 3 leading causes of death,...

A geodatabase was developed to compile mapped abundance raster datasets for 25 species/species groups (e.g., all duckweeds combined) for pools 4, 8, and 13 on the Upper Mississippi River system from 1998-2019. Individual rasters within the geodatabase have scores ranging from 0 (species modeled to be absent at that raster cell) to 100 (highest possible mapped abundance probability at that raster cell). Relative abundance, for submersed species and filamentous algae, represents the sum of rake scores across the six subsites divided by the maximum possible rake score (30) at each site, multiplied by 100 (0-100%). Percent cover, for emersed, rooted floating-leaved and free-floating lifeforms, represents the maximum...

We investigated fine-scale genetic patterns of the federally threatened Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) on a relatively undisturbed island in northern Michigan, USA. This species often persists in habitat islands throughout much of its distribution due to extensive habitat loss and distance-limited dispersal. These data are from 102 individual Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes sampled at Bois Blanc Island, Michigan and genotyped at 15 microsatellite loci. Samples were collected as part of a study to examine functional connectivity for the Eastern Massasauga. We found that the entire island population exhibited weak genetic structuring with spatially segregated variation in effective migration...

USGS scientists evaluated the utility of hidden Markov movement models to characterize seasonal movements of mule deer (Odecoileus hemionus) and pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) that were tracked with GPS collars in Wyoming, USA, during 2014-2021. Data include step lengths and turning angles for individual animals at daily time-steps throughout the tracking period. Models demonstrated distinct seasonal movements between species indicative of migratory behavior and enable analyses to identify influential factors that affect decisions to migrate by animals.

This dataset contains the results of a laboratory chronic bioassay with 6-week-old juvenile mussels (Fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) in a 28-day zinc exposure (120 and 240 micrograms zinc per liter) with endpoints of survival and growth (biomass and length) following standard ASTM methods. Surviving mussels were transferred from the control and treatment groups into a culture pond and their survival and growth were monitored for 56 days. In this data release we report individual biological, chemical, and water quality measurements from the laboratory toxicity test exposure and pond grow-out period.

Inland fishes provide important ecosystem services to communities worldwide and are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Fish respond to climate change in diverse and nuanced ways which creates challenges for practitioners of fish conservation, climate change adaptation, and management. Although climate change is known to affect fish globally, a comprehensive online, public database of how climate change has impacted inland fishes worldwide and adaptation or management practices that may address these impacts does not exist. We conducted an extensive, systematic primary literature review to identify peer-reviewed journal publications describing projected and documented examples of climate change...

During November 2018, the Camp Fire burned more than 150,000 acres in Butte County, California. The fire was the deadliest and most destructive in California history, destroying more than 18,000 structures and causing at least 85 fatalities. The U.S. Geological Survey sampled surface water in areas affected by the Camp Fire, plus an unburned control site, during two post-fire sampling events, January 21-23, 2019 and February 28 - March 1, 2019. During each of those two sampling events, surface-water samples were collected at 8 stream locations. These 16 water samples were filtered using filters with multiple pore sizes (1.2 µm, 0.8 µm, 0.45 µm, and 0.22 µm) to evaluate colloid transport of trace elements. The filtrates...
