Interest in the field of environmental DNA (eDNA) is growing rapidly and eDNA surveys are becoming an important consideration for aquatic resource managers dealing with invasive species. However, in order for eDNA monitoring to mature as a research and management tool, there are several critical knowledge gaps that must be filled. One such gap is the fate of eDNA materials in the aquatic environment. Understanding the environmental factors that influence the decay of eDNA and how these factors impact detection probabilities over time and space could have significant implications for eDNA survey design and data interpretation. Here we experimentally explore eDNA decay in waste materials and reproductive cells obtained...

Diploid and triploid Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella) tagged with acoustic transmitters were observed in Truman Reservoir, Missouri from February 2017 to March 2019 to determine habitat usage in winter. Habitat parameters were measured at used and available sites to model habitat preference. In addition, tagged fish were targeted during removal attempts to determine the efficacy of using tagged Judas Grass Carp in removing wild conspecifics. This dataset includes information on tagged Grass Carp and habitats they selected as well as capture events and characteristics of the wild fish caught during these attempts.
The health of soils along roadways is critical for maximizing habitat quality and minimizing negative ecological effects of roads. Adjacent to unpaved roads, soil chemistry may be altered by the deposition of dust, as well as by road treatment with dust suppressants or soil stabilizer products. If present in roadside soils, these product residues may be available to plants, terrestrial invertebrates, or small mammals. Unfortunately, very few studies have attempted to track the transport of dust suppressants after application. As part of a larger ongoing study on the environmental effects of dust suppressant products on roadside plants and animals, we sampled roadside soils at Loess Bluff National Wildlife Refuge...

The vernal pool fairy shrimp, Branchinecta lynchi, (Branchiopoda; Anostraca) and other fairy shrimp species have been listed as ‘threatened’ or ‘endangered’ under the United States’ Endangered Species Act (ESA). There is little information about the sensitivity of Branchinecta spp. to toxic effects of contaminants, making it difficult to determine whether they are adequately protected by water quality criteria. A series of acute (24 hr) lethality/immobilization tests were conducted with three species of fairy shrimp (Branchinecta lynchi, Branchinecta lindahli, and Thamnocephalus platyurus) and 10 chemicals with varying modes of toxic action: ammonia, potassium, chloride, sulfate, chromium(VI), copper, nickel, zinc,...

We investigated whether the length of time fire chemical weathers on a terrestrial substrate before mixing into aquatic environments alters the chemical’s toxicity when encountered by juvenile rainbow trout. We also looked at whether the type of substrate where the chemical is applied affects its toxicity to juvenile rainbow trout after mixing into water. Two fire chemicals (Phos Chek LC95A-R and Phos Chek MVP-Fx) were applied to four substrate media (low organic content soil, high organic content soil, duff, and gravel) and allowed to age on the substrate for 7, 14, 28 or 56 days. At the end of the assigned weathering period, 96-hour assays were conducted by adding water to the dosed substrate and stocking each...

A total of 236 Black Carp were collected throughout the year from 2017-2019 by incidental captures of commercial fishers and biologists. Capture date, river basin of capture location, and coordinates were recorded for each Black Carp captured. A subsample of 119 Black Carp varying from 429-1268 millimeters total length were compared for the precision of annuli counts by two experienced readers for the ossified two anterior pectoral fin rays, the ossified anterior dorsal fin ray, sectioned vertebrae, and lapilli otoliths for selection of a single structure based on percent exact agreement, coefficient of variation, and age-frequency plots.

This dataset describes the diameter, shape, settling velocity, and specific gravity of eggs from 9 female pallid sturgeon and 14 female shovelnose sturgeon as determined in laboratory studies. Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon are believed to broadcast demersal eggs in the current, near the river bed over coarse substrate. It is hypothesized that eggs settle immediately following fertilization, but field conditions preclude direct observation. The dispersal of sturgeon eggs is affected by physical properties of the eggs and hydraulic conditions at the spawning location.

This data was generated from a study in which five experiments were conducted that tested whether and how dissolved chemicals might assist food recognition in two filter-feeding fishes, the silver (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and the bighead carp (H. nobilis). The buccal-pharngeal pumping (BPP), a behavior in which fish pump water into their buccal cavities, was observed in both silver and bighead carps after exposure to a a variety of food filtrates and mixtures. In addition, occlusion experiments to determine if the olfactory sense has a very important, but not exclusive, role in bigheaded carp feeding behaviors were conducted.

The data provide location and data quality information for ground control points (GCP) deployed at Palmyra Atoll for acquisition of imagery using small unoccupied aerial systems (sUAS) in October 2016. Thales ProMark 3 handheld geographic positioning systems (GPS) were used as both a local base station and to record locations of individual GCPs, with occupancy times of approximately 30 minutes per GCP. Location data for GCPs were post-processed against base station data using Mobile Mapper Office software to yield local position accuracy of approximately 0.1 m.

Grass Carp Movement and Capture Data from the Sandusky River, Lake Erie, Ohio, USA from 2020 to 2022
Data includes grass carp position and sampling data from 2020 to 2022. We used grass carp that were implanted with acoustic transmitters. The position data was generated in Fathom Position from receivers that composed several VEMCO Positioning Systems (VPS). We also queried the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation Network (GLATOS) to obtain non-VPS position detections from receivers made from multiple projects across Lake Erie and associated tributaries. Sampling data was downloaded from the grass carp capture database hosted on ArcGIS Online These data contain information such as location of event, time gears were deployed and retrieved, and number of grass carp caught.

This dataset includes microsomal EROD data from an assay done with liver samples from several fish species that are found in Arizona at sites that are being assessed for PBDE contamination. The data was created in September and October 2016.
The data contain yearly modeled estimates of Pacific salmon escapement (in annual metric tons of wet mass) from 1976 to 2015 across four regions of western North America. A second data file contains modeled estimates of contaminant or nutrient concentrations in Pacific Salmon. The modeled estimates were derived from Bayesian generalized linear models (contaminant or nutrient concentrations) or from Bayesian generalized additive models (Salmon Escapement).
