This dataset consists of measurements of the digestive gland in the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis orally exposed to uranium. The objective of the study was to assess the morphological effects of uranium on the snail digestive gland by light microscopy. Laboratory-cultured L stagnalis were exposed to either synthetic or natural solid phases of uranium and a subset (6 controls and 6 exposed) were euthanized and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for histopathological assessment. Slides were processed and stained with hematoxalin and eosin as per standard procedure (Luna 1968). The size of each sample, the length and width of digestive gland tubules (5 random glands per sample) and height of digestive cells...

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in coming years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health (EH) stressors. These data document toxicity measured by reduction of the light emission of Aliivibrio (formerly Photobacterium) fischeri and the inhibition of polymerase chain reactions caused by environmental...

These data were compiled to study mercury and selenium concentrations in fish species and assemblages in lotic waterbodies across the Upper Colorado River Basin. Data were compiled from State and Federal agencies. This data table contains raw concentration data, as well as standardized concentrations corrected for differences based on sample type (i.e., tissue type), species-specific bioaccumulation rates (Table S1), and fish size (Table S2). The data were used in linear mixed effects models to estimate average mercury and selenium concentration in fish species and in fish assemblages, including fish total length (cm), sampling location (Sub basin name and GPS coordinates), and sampling year (Figures 2,3, and 4...
This work is part of a study of the immunological effects of exposure to alternative flame retardants in avian species. For the pathology portion of the study, hatchling American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were exposed to the flame retardant isopropyl triphenyl phosphate (ITP) and then challenged with a synthetic analogue of viral double-stranded RNA, polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C). Control birds were challenged with vehicle only or vehicle and poly I:C. At euthanasia, spleen, thymus, and bursa of Fabricius were collected and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for histopathological assessment. Slides were processed and stained with hematoxalin and eosin as per standard procedure (Luna 1968). Quantitative...

A seminal question in ecotoxicology is the extent to which contaminant exposure evokes prolonged effects on physiological function and fitness. A series of studies were undertaken with American kestrels ingesting environmentally realistic concentrations of the second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide (SGAR) brodifacoum (BROD). Kestrels fed BROD at 0.3, 1.0 or 3.0 µg/g diet wet wt for 7 d exhibited dose-dependent hemorrhage, histopathological lesions and coagulopathy (prolonged prothrombin and Russell’s viper venom times). Following termination of a 7 d exposure to 0.5 µg BROD/g diet, prolonged blood clotting time returned to baseline values within a week, but BROD residues in liver and kidney (terminal half-life...

A heterologous thrombin clotting time assay (TCT) was used to measure the time for conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin using commercially available reagents. Human reference material included in the kit was diluted with imidazole buffered saline (IBS; 0.0125M imidazole-0.109 M sodium chloride, pH7.4) to generate a standard curve. Each kestrel plasma sample was thawed at 37ºC and diluted with IBS, and following incubation at 37ºC, the reaction was then initiated by the addition of bovine thrombin reagent supplied with the assay kit, with clotting time measured to 0.1 s. Fibrinogen concentration was determined in a single assay for each of the 3 study trials, with reference samples interspersed among study samples....

This dataset consists of concentration and isotopic data for a method designed to isolate and analyze methylmercury. Several matrices (lab-based, and natural) were tested to ensure that the method was capable of recovering methylmercury amendments. Additionally, natural matrices (plankton and sediment) with ambient methylmercury were also analyzed to ensure that the method could be successfully applied to natural matrices. Separation tests for sediment, water, and biotic matrices showed acceptable recoveries (98 ± 5%, n = 54) and reproducible δ202Hg isotope results (2SD < 0.15 ‰) down to 5 ng of MeHg. This dataset is part of a complimentary paper published in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00216-019-02277-0)...

This is a collection of data on the contamination of water, fish, and sediments in Biscayne National Park and in canals that discharge into the national park. The water data are estimations of their concentrations in water based on sampling with passive water samplers (semi-permeable membrane devices and polar organic chemical integrative samplers). Also in this data set are estrogen equivalencies for the chemical mixtures in the polar organic chemical integrative samplers.

This dataset contains field measurements of temperature in shallow vertical profiles beneath a lake-bottom in the vicinity of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) at Ashumet Pond, Falmouth, MA. From August 21, 2015 – September 3, 2015 vertical temperature profilers designed to quantify groundwater upwelling dynamics were installed at seven locations. Hollow stainless steel pipes (2.5 cm OD) were slotted horizontally to allow installation of iButton thermal data loggers (Maxim Integrated DS1922L, 0.0625 oC precision) protected with waterproof silicone caulking. The temperature profilers were gently tapped into the cobbly bed by first driving guide-hole of slightly smaller diameter. After installation, the thermal loggers...

Two synoptic sampling campaigns were conducted near Breckenridge, Colorado, to quantify metal loading to Illinois Gulch, a tributary of the Blue River. The first campaign, conducted in August 2016, was designed to determine the degree to which Illinois Gulch loses water to the underlying mine workings, and to determine the effect of these losses on observed metal loads. The second campaign, conducted in September 2017, was designed to evaluate metal loading within Iron Springs, a subwatershed that was responsible for the majority of the metal loading observed in 2016. A continuous, instream injection of a sodium bromide (NaBr) tracer was initiated at the head of the respective study reaches several days prior to...

This data release includes comma-delimited datafiles (.CSV files) and geospatial datasets (GIS shapefile and raster datasets) from a survey of lake-bottom temperatures using a Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (FO-DTS) system in May 2007. The distribution of lakebed temperatures was determined over an 18-hour period in May 2007 using a LIOS fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) system (LIOS Technology, Cologne, Germany) connected to a 1000-m-long fiber cable shielded with rubberized armoring. The FO-DTS system measures temperature by means of optical fibers that function as linear sensors of temperature dependent laser light backscatter, producing temperature values to an accuracy of 0.01oC...

This dataset contains field measurements of direct groundwater seepage by using half-barrel style seepage meters permanently installed in a lake-bottom permeable reactive barrier (PRB) at Ashumet Pond, Falmouth, MA. The meters are a modified version of a standard half-barrel seepage meter. Each meter consists of a 208-L polyethylene, corrosion-inhibiting drum cut to a length of 0.8 m and fitted with a removable 0.56-m-diameter lid. A 1.3-cm-diameter hole was drilled into each lid to allow outflow or inflow to be measured. During installation, the top rim of each barrel was positioned to be at the expected grade after backfilling. Between 2004 and 2015, seepage rates at each meter were measured annually, with the...
This dataset describes histopathological changes in liver, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle and intestine of captive American kestrels exposed to the second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum (BROD). The goal of the study was to determine the toxic range of brodifacoum by feeding birds a diet containing 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 ug BROD/g wet weight. Birds were necropsied and examined grossly for hemorrhages or anemia, and liver, kidney, heart, pectoral muscle, and intestine was collected for histopathological evaluation. Tissues were scanned at least 100x magnification and all lesions, including hemorrhage, inflammation, and degenerative changes, were described and assigned a morphologic diagnosis with severity,...

Exposure of wildlife to Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) is likely to occur but evidence of hazard and risk is limited. One exposure pathway that has received attention is trophic transfer of APIs in a water-fish-osprey food chain. Samples of water, fish plasma and osprey plasma were collected from Delaware River and Bay, and analyzed for 21 APIs. Only 2 of 21 analytes exceeded Method Detection Limits (MDL) in osprey plasma (acetaminophen and diclofenac) with plasma levels typically 2-3 orders of magnitude below human therapeutic concentrations (HTC). We built upon a screening level model used to predict osprey exposure to APIs in Chesapeake Bay and evaluated whether exposure levels could have been predicted...

Recent concern for the adverse effects from neonicotinoid insecticides has centered on risk for insect pollinators in general and bees specifically. However, natural resource managers are also concerned about the risk of neonicotinoids to conservation efforts for the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and need a tool to estimate risk for wild monarch butterflies exposed to clothianidin. In the present study, monarch butterfly larvae were exposed to contaminated milkweed plants from hatch until pupation, and the effects upon larval survival, larval growth, pupation success, and adult mass were measured. Soils dosed with a granular insecticide product lead to average clothianidin concentrations of 10.8 - 843 ng/g...
