Occupancy data were collected during the 2010 surveys of Alamagan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Data were collected at points along transects where trained observers listened for Reed-warblers during the 3-minute survey period (30 seconds of playback followed by 2 minutes and 30 seconds of observation). Observers recorded the horizontal distances of any Reed-warblers heard/and or seen, direction of the bird from the observer, and time of detection. The data set also includes covariates that may influence the occupancy of birds.

We quantified the availability of breeding habitat of the endangered Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus). The species is thought to nest excusively in natural cavities within mature ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees but birds commonly occur in short stature trees that presumably do not have any natural cavities because of their polyploidal (many-branched) structure. To test this hypothesis we searched for cavities in trees where akepa forage and we measured diameter of each stem of each tree examined. The habitat is in montane areas of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Mauna Loa volcano. We surveyed 57 plots, 49 in montane woodland and 8 in closed-canopy forest. Six tree cavities were detected in the 214 sampled trees:...

This data release contains the point-transect distance sampling records of Hawaii Akepa collected at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge in 2002, including survey point locations, distance to detected birds, number of detected birds, elevation, and alliance-level habitat classification. This data release consists of two tabular datasets, one that contains distances (described herein) and the other that contains locations, elevation, habitat and counts.

Point transect distance sampling data collected during the 2010 surveys of Alamagan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Data were collected at points along transects where trained observers recorded the detection type (heard, seen, or heard then seen) and horizontal distance (exact distance in m) from the station center point to individual birds detected during an 8-min count. To increase the numbers of detections, survey data from 40 detections from the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW; 2000) surveys of Alamagan, and 46 detections from Saipan surveys described in Camp et al. (2009). The count length of the DFW surveys was only 5 minutes; therefore, we included detections from the first...

Point count survey data collected from 1998 through 2018 to estimate palila abundance on Mauna Kea. Point counts were conducted on 32 transects surrounding Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii Island. Transects extended from roughly treeline through the forested area, with survey stations approximately 150 m apart. Counts were conducted for six minutes, during which the species, distance to, and detection type were recorded for all birds observed. First posted: December 6, 2018 (Version unavailable since it contains sensitive information. All non-sensitive data is contained in version 2.0).
