In June 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Water Science Center (MD-DE-DC WSC) team began to collect and inventory available information on toxic contaminants within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. State agencies were contacted to determine available data. Also, the National Water Information System (NWIS) and National Water Quality Database (NWQD) were queried to gather relevant data for the compilation. The resulting tables contain records for available sites where specific analyte groups, Hg (mercury), PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls), or pesticides, have been collected with appropriate supplemental metadata including media, method, time frame, and frequency of collection. Sample...

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an estimated 258 million people nationwide, or 86% of the U.S. population, relied on public water supplies for their household use in 2005 (USGS, 2013). The remaining population obtains their water from different sources, such as a domestic self-supply well. However, the spatial distribution of water supply systems has not been compiled. Mapping where these people are located can be done within...

Generalized lithology (rock type) and physiography based on geologic formations were used to characterize hydrgeomorphic regions (HGMR) within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. These HGMRs were used in conjunction with existing data to assess the significance of ground-water discharge as a source of nitrate load to nontidal streams in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (Bachman and others, 1998). This work is part of the U.S. Geological Survey's...

MDWU98 is a point coverage that represents the locations of wells for the State of Maryland that are permitted to withdraw 10,000 gallons or more per day by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). Each site has the permit number, permit amount, reported withdrawal, aquifer code, and type of use. Information contained in the dataset comes from the U.S.Geological Survey site-specific water-use database (SWUDS).

This metadata record documents two comma separated text files of average daily fresh-water withdrawal amounts by NHDPlus v2.1 catchment (COMID) within the conterminous United States for calendar year 2010. County-level reported estimated use of water are specifically reported as groundwater and surface water and are allotted to catchments by a sum of the catchment based on evenly distributing the county total across the number of county land-area pixels. All values are reported as gallons per day. Source county-level data were acquired from Estimated use of water in the United States in 2010 (Maupin and others, 2014; available at https://dx.doi.org/10.3133/cir1405). These datasets can be linked to the NHDPlus version...
