This Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections consists of handwritten descriptions of rock unit sequences measured along roads, railroads, trails, and strip mine highwalls in the Tennessee coal fields. Most of the collection is composed of sections measured by Dr. Harold Wanless during his study of the southern Appalachian coal fields in the late 1930's. Most of the sections are unpublished, except for being included as columnar section illustrations in - Wanless, H.R., 1946, Pennsylvanian geology of a part of the southern Appalachian coal field: Geological Society of America Memoir, 13, 162 p. Other measured sections in this collection originate from published and unpublished sources.

This collection of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) documents consists of published and unpublished reports, memoranda, and maps related to mineral resource investigations and hydroelectric dam site geotechnical studies throughout the TVA region. They have been acquired as a result of the close association between TGS and TVA staff over many decades. This collection consists of written descriptions of lithologies encountered during the drilling phase of various coal exploration programs in Tennessee. Descriptions range from detailed to brief. Information obtained primarily from diamond core drilling with additional information from rotary drilling and e-logs. Drill hole depths range from tens to thousands of feet deep. Individual drill holes were originally located by using the Tennessee State Plane Coordinate System (NAD 27). Quadrangles with abundant drill holes have accompanying drill hole location maps.

The documents in this collection represent material that the Tennessee Geological Survey has acquired from numerous sources over the years. Many of the documents were donated by former employees of zinc companies that once operated in the state. Additional documents represent originals and copies of U.S. Geological Survey files related to the war minerals exploration program conducted in the 1940's, as well as unpublished work completed by the Tennessee Geological Survey.
