Wetland restoration efforts conducted by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in Louisiana rely on monitoring efforts to determine the efficacy of these efforts. The Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) was developed to assist in a multiple-reference approach that uses aspects of hydrogeomorphic functional assessments and probabilistic sampling for monitoring. The CRMS program includes a suite of approximately 398 sites that encompass the range of hydrological and ecological conditions for each stratum. As part of CRMS, land and water classifications are created from Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs) approximately every three years at all CRMS sites. A DOQQ...

This digital dataset consists of monthly climate data from the Basin Characterization Model v8 (BCMv8) for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2) for water years 1922 to 2019. The BCMv8 data are available in a separate data release titled "The Basin Characterization Model - A regional water balance software package (BCMv8) data release and model archive for hydrologic California, water years 1896-2020". The data were modified by: (1) extracting the data from the data source for the relevant model domain and times, and (2) rescaling the 270-meter BCMv8 grid to the small watersheds that contribute boundary flow to the CVHM2 model for the hydrologic variables recharge and runoff. The three data pieces...

Karst hydrologic systems are important resources in the state of Tennessee both as drinking water resources and as centers for possible biological diversity. These systems are susceptible to contamination due to the inherent connectivity between surface water and groundwater systems in karst systems. A partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Tennessee Department of Conservation (TDEC) was formed to investigate karst spring systems across the state utilizing fluorescent groundwater tracing, particularly in areas where these resources may be used as drinking water sources. In fall 2021, USGS and TDEC staff identified possible vulnerabilities or complexities that may exist within karst spring systems...

South of Interstate 40 mule deer reside in Game Management Units (GMU) 8 and 6B in Arizona. The herd summers in high-elevation open meadows and ponderosa pine habitat southwest of Flagstaff, Arizona. In late October, the herd migrates west to lower elevation pinyon-juniper and shrub habitats near the junction of Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 89. With funding support by the U.S. Department of the Interior (USDI) through Secretarial Order 3362, research on this herd’s migration began in February 2020. Additional GPS collars were deployed in January 2022 with support from the U.S. Forest Service, Mule Deer Foundation, and other partners. Primary threats to the herd’s migration involve high volume roads including Interstate...

The Siskiyou mule deer herd migrates from winter ranges primarily north and east of Mount Shasta (i.e., Day Bench, Lake Shastina, Montague, Mount Dome, Mount Hebron, Sheep-Mahogany Mountain, Tionesta, and Wild Horse Mountain) to sprawling summer ranges scattered between the Mount Shasta Wilderness in the west and the Burnt Lava Flow Geological Area in the east. A small percentage of the herd are residents, residing largely within winter ranges across the central and northeast areas of the herd’s annual distribution. The total population size of the Siskiyou herd is unknown, but adult deer densities averaged 6.01 deer per km2 on summer ranges in 2017 and 5.16 deer per km2 on winter ranges in 2019 (Wittmer and others,...

Mule deer within the Jackson segment of the Sublette herd winter mainly in the valley and south-facing slopes of the buttes. These geologic features are characteristic of the Jackson Hole area near Jackson, Wyoming. Winter ranges in the Jackson valley are a mixture of national forest public land as well as private urban and exurban land. The lower elevation, south-facing hillslopes are typified by stands of Juniperus scopulorum (Rocky Mountain juniper) or mixed mountain shrub communities of Artemisia tridentata (mountain big sagebrush), Artemisia tripartite (three-tip sagebrush), Purshia tridentata (antelope bitterbrush), Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon serviceberry), Symphoricarpos albus (common snowberry), chokecherry,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled national shoreline data for more than 20 years to document coastal change and serve the needs of research, management, and the public. Maintaining a record of historical shoreline positions is an effective method to monitor national shoreline evolution over time, enabling scientists to identify areas most susceptible to erosion or accretion. These data can help coastal managers and planners understand which areas of the coast are vulnerable to change. This data release includes two new mean high water (MHW) shorelines extracted from lidar data collected in 2010 and 2017-2018. Previously published historical shorelines for South Carolina (Kratzmann and others, 2017)...

This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Carlisle 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in Pennsylvania. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2019 and 2020 and downloaded from the USGS National Map TNM Download. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

This dataset consists of 122 magnetotelluric (MT) soundings collected in 2016 in the northern Harrat Rahat, located near the holy city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah in Saudi Arabia. These data were collected as part of a joint project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Saudi Geological Survey examining the volcanic hazard associated with the harrat. Imaging the 3-D electrical resistivity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the harrat will help in understanding the magmatic system at depth.

A model of the lower seismogenic depth distribution of earthquakes in the western United States was developed to support models for seismic hazard assessment that will be included in the 2023 USGS National Seismic Hazard Model. This data release presents a recalibration using the hypocentral depths of events M>1 from the Advanced National Seismic System Comprehensive Earthquake Catalog from 1980 to 2021. For higher precision and better resolution in the model, the data were supplemented with seismicity from southern California that was relocated by Hauksson and others (2012). Along the San Andreas Fault, the deepest seismogenic depths are located at 23 km around the Cholame segment, whereas the shallowest depths...

This dataset provides seven Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes covering a portion of the Madeira River in Brazil from Porto Velho to Abuna. Each scene has been pre-processed for the use of detecting artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) riverine dredges. The scenes were collected from the ASF search vertex (https://search.asf.alaska.edu/#/) as L1 Detected High-Res Dual-Pol (GRD-HD) products. They were acquired using a C-band SAR with the Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) mode, VV and VH polarizations, and a temporal resolution of 6 days. Each SAR acquisition covers a 250 km swath; however, these have been clipped to the study area. They have a 20 m x 22 m (ground range x azimuth) resolution, a 10 m...

During the spring and summer of 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey collected water-quality samples for nutrient analysis at 45 stations across the state of Connecticut and adjacent areas of New York and Rhode Island to better understand the groundwater discharge component of nitrogen loading to the Long Island Sound. The targeted stations were located in small drainage basins (less than 50 square kilometers) in the southern portion of the Long Island Sound watershed. Sites were selected randomly from groups based on expected drivers or controls on baseflow nitrogen loads. Factors used in the grouping included four metrics calculated for the upstream watershed: percent impervious cover, septic system density, percent...
