This data release provides the concentration results for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) collected on French Island, in the town of Campbell, Wisconsin, sampled quarterly beginning in 2021. These samples were collected from groundwater wells (potable and non-potable taps) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center (UMESC). Three U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified laboratories were contracted to analyzed samples for this study. Samples from the first sampling in 2021, were analyzed by SGS Axys Laboratory (AXYS) in British Columbia, Canada. Samples from the second sampling in 2021 were analyzed at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), University...

Pesticides are widely applied and can enter the environment, potentially effecting non-target organisms. To better evaluate pesticide exposure using non-lethal techniques, a method was developed for the extraction of pesticides and their degradates from small (100 µL) volume plasma samples. Solid phase extraction was used for lipid removal after plasma samples were protein precipitated. Samples were analyzed with liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Samples were spiked at three different concentrations, low (25 ng/mL), medium (100 ng/mL), and high (250 ng/mL) and recoveries of 70 to 130% were achieved across all spike levels for 179, 180, and 183 of 210 target compounds were...

This data release includes data collected in the pursuit of identifying pre- and post-colonial riparian ecosystems found throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA. A single raster file is included, and represents a topological classification of the entire county according to a hydrologically conditioned Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Ten shapefiles are also included, nine of which represent the depths of various soil layers as identified by ground-penetrating radar for two detailed study sites within Anne Arundel County. A tenth documents the depths cored at both detailed study sites, and their spatial locations. Finally, twenty comma-delimited tables are included in this release with fifteen tables documenting...

This data release presents digital surface models (DSMs) and orthomosaic images of the Whale's Tail Marsh region of South San Francisco Bay, CA. The data were created using structure-from-motion (SfM) processing of repeat aerial imagery collected from fixed-wing aircraft. The raw images were acquired from an approximate altitude of 427 meters (1,400 feet) above ground level (AGL), using a Hasselblad A6D-100c camera fitted with an HC 80 lens, resulting in a nominal ground-sample-distance (GSD) of 2.5 centimeters per pixel. The acquisition flight lines were designed to provide approximately 50 percent overlap between adjacent flight lines (sidelap), with approximately 70 percent overlap between sequential images along...
The ability of formalin, PEROX-AID® (hydrogen peroxide), and seawater to kill waterborne Nanophyetus salmincola cercariae was evaluated in vitro. Newly emerged waterborne cercariae survived for extended periods in freshwater, with 50-74% survival occurring in negative control groups after 24 hr. Exposure to dilutions of formalin reduced this survival time, with 0% of cercariae surviving after 30 min. in 167 ppm, 40 min. in 83 ppm, and 180 min. in 42ppm. Exposure to PEROX-AID® (hydrogen peroxide) for one hour resulted in reduced cercariae survival (16.4%) only at the highest concentration (100 ppm), compared to 100% survival in the untreated controls and all lesser concentrations. Dilutions of seawater resulted in...

Clear Lake is a 180 km2 freshwater lake located in the California Coast Range, approximately 120 km northwest of Sacramento. The lake supports a wide variety of fish and bird species and is a very popular sport-fishing destination. However, fish consumption advisories associated with mercury (Hg) contamination exist for several popular recreational species. The lake is comprised of three main regions including a large open-water region to the northwest (North Arm), a smaller and narrower region to the southeast (South Arm), and the smallest and narrowest region to the east (Oaks Arm). The Sulfur Bank Mercury Mine (SBMM), located on the south shore of the Oaks Arm, was mined by both open-pit and underground methods...

Mining wastes can pose environmental hazards. These hazards can be mitigated by promoting the growth of native plants that can stabilize the mine wastes and potentially toxic elements in situ (i.e., phytostabilization). We grew a widespread perennial grass species (Bouteloua curtipendula) in dolomite amended polymetallic tailings from a historic mine in southeastern Arizona (USA). We applied a compost top dressing and an endophyte seed coating alone and in combination to quantify improvements in plant growth and potentially toxic trace element stabilization. This release provides the data on the following: temperature, light, and humidity during growth; plant growth rates and biomass yields; organic matter concentrations...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources Mission Area (WMA) is working to address a need to understand where the Nation is experiencing water shortages or surpluses relative to the demand for water need by delivering routine assessments of water supply and demand and an understanding of the natural and human factors affecting the balance between supply and demand. A key part of the Integrated Water Availability Assessments (IWAAs) Trends and Drivers project is identifying long-term national trends in water availability, including groundwater and surface water quantity, quality, and use. This data release contains Mann-Kendall monotonic trend analyses for 55 observed annual (calendar, water, and climate...

Stable isotope compositions (the ratios deuterium/hydrogen, oxygen-18/oxygen-16, and sulfur-34/sulfur-32) are reported for alunite, jarosite, kaolinite, silica, cinnabar, marcasite, and native sulfur from outcrops in and around the workings of the Sulphur Bank mercury mine, Lake County, California, and chemical compositions are reported, from electron microprobe analyses, for alunite and buddingtonite. Isotope analyses are given also for hydrogen sulfide gas from active fumaroles and for soluble sulfate in samples of mine waste. The waste results reflect fine grained material (particles less than 0.063 millimeter in diameter) that were taken from composites, each composite representing a particular waste pile that...
