Public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS) is increasingly used in coastal settings to inform natural resource management and spatial planning. Social Values for Ecosystem Services (SolVES), a PPGIS tool that systematizes the mapping and modeling of social values and cultural ecosystem services, is promising for use in coastal settings but has seen relatively limited applications relative to other PPGIS approaches; it has also to our knowledge not yet been applied in a barrier island setting. In this study, we surveyed two visitor groups and residents living near Cape Lookout National Seashore (North Carolina, USA) to understand social values they hold for the area in the context of the park’s management...

Stabilizing the eastern, migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is expected to require substantial habitat restoration on agricultural land in the core breeding area of the Upper Midwestern U.S. Previous research has considered the potential to utilize marginal land for this purpose because of its low productivity, erodible soils, and high nutrient input requirements. This strategy has strong potential for restoring milkweed (Asclepias spp.), but may be limited in terms of its ability to generate additional biophysical and socioeconomic benefits for local communities. Here we explore the possibility of restoring milkweed via the creation of continuous riparian buffer strips around perennial...

The InterpretSELDM program is a graphical post processor designed to facilitate analysis and presentation of stormwater modeling results from the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model (SELDM), which is a stormwater model developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration. SELDM simulates flows, concentrations, and loads in stormflows from upstream basins, the highway, best management practice outfalls, and in the receiving water downstream of a highway. SELDM is designed to transform complex scientific data into meaningful information about (1) the risk of adverse effects from stormwater runoff on receiving waters, (2) the potential need for mitigation measures,...

A data processing task was needed by National Park Service to transpose field tabular and spatial data into various digital formats of the 1994 Aquatic Plant Survey Report. A survey of aquatic vascular plants was conducted in a 122 mile stretch of the Upper Delaware River between Hancock, New York and the Delaware Water Gap in 1991 and 1992. A total of 196 sites were inventoried and twenty-eight species of plants were recorded. The aquatic vascular plant flora in this section of the Delaware River appeared to be thriving, due in large part to good water quality and moderate impacts by man. The purpose of this task was the digitizing of hand-drawn field mapping data from hardcopy paper maps into digital map products....

Over 4,400 large scale commercial solar facilities are in operation in the United States as of December, 2021, representing over 60 gigawatts of electric power capacity; of these, over 3,900 are ground-mounted with capacities of 1MW or more, specified as large scale solar photovoltaic (LSPV) facilities. LSPV ground-mounted installations continue to grow, with over 400 projects coming online in 2021 alone. Currently, a comprehensive, publicly available georectified data describing the locations and spatial footprints of these facilities does not exist. Analysts from the US Geological Survey and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory collaborated to develop and release the United States Large Scale Solar Photovoltaic...

Hurricane Maria brought intense rainfall and caused widespread landsliding throughout Puerto Rico during September 2017. Previous detailed landslide inventories following the hurricane include Bessette-Kirton et al. (2017, 2019). Here we continue that work with an in-depth look at two areas in San Lorenzo, which is a municipality in the east-central part of the main island. To study a characteristic sample of landslides in San Lorenzo, we mapped all visible landslides in two physiographically diverse areas, but all within the San Lorenzo Formation. We used aerial imagery collected between 9-15 October 2017 (Quantum Spatial, Inc., 2017) to map landslide source and runout areas, and 1-m-resolution pre-event and post-event...

On October 13, 2020 a survey of Upper Letts Lake was conducted where both bathymetric and terrestrial lidar data were collected. Additionally, six bed material samples and three core samples were collected to understand the characterization of the grain-size of the lake bed. Survey data were merged with an additional lidar dataset from the USGS 3DEP program to create digital elevation model (DEM). The DEM was used to update the stage-storage and stage-surface area tables for the reservoir. This data release provides the following data sets; 1) bathymetric and terrestrial elevation data, 2) Combined bathymetric and 3DEP DEM, 3) stage-storage and stage-surface area tables from DEM, and 4) bed material grain-size and...

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads, and changes in loads, in rivers across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been calculated using monitoring data from the Chesapeake Bay Nontidal Network (NTN) stations for the period 1985 through 2014. Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment that was exported from each of the NTN watersheds. To determine the trend in loads, the annual load results are flow normalized to integrate out the year-to-year variability in river discharge....

This geospatial dataset represents a prototype of a finer-scale representation of the principal aquifers of the United States, using four original principal aquifers in the Upper Midwest, United States, which were re-analyzed and condensed into three updated principal aquifers. The original principal aquifer definitions and extents were published in the Ground Water Atlas of the United States at a scale of 1:5,000,000. The updated version in this dataset are based on a reinterpretation of the original definitions using geologic data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) State Geologic Map Compilation (v 1.1, 2017), which contains published state data at scales from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000. This shapefile includes...

c) We examined effects of flooding on supply rates of 14 nutrients in floodplain areas invaded by Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass), areas restored to young successional forests (browsed by white-tailed deer and unbrowsed), and remnant mature forests in the Upper Mississippi River floodplain. Plant Root Simulator ion-exchange probes were deployed for four separate 28-day periods. The first deployment occurred during flooded conditions, while the three subsequent deployments were conducted during progressively drier periods. Time after flooding corresponded with increases in NO3--N, K+ and Zn+2, decreases in H2PO4--P, Fe+3, Mn+2, and B(OH)4-B, a decrease followed by an increase in NH4+-N, Ca+2, Mg+2 and Al+3,...
