Values represent percent of surrounding landscape (5K) are dominated by sagebrush cover. Reclassified LANDFIRE 2013 Existing Vegetation Type by selecting the ecological systems containing sagebrush (Codes: 2080, 2125, 2126, 2220, 2064, 2072, 2079, 2124) to create a binary raster dataset with 1 for the sagebrush land cover types and zero for all others.To incorporate sagebrush lost to fire in fires since the Landsat was flown in 2010 that Landfire was derived from, I used fire perimeters from 2011,2012, & 2013 to reclassify pixels designated as having sagebrush as 0 (not having sagebrush), which assumes a homogenous burn (in reality there may be patches of sagebrush left within a burn perimeter). The Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) recently completed the CLCC Science Strategy: Mission Alignment to outline shared conservation values among CLCC partner entities. Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. This cross-programmatic collaborative project will expand on a growing network of Motus automated receivers (stations) to provide the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds which will inform key knowledge gaps about migration routes and stopover locations. In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) wetland plant, invertebrate, and waterbird productivity are primarily driven by water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles. Large proportions of wetlands in the PPR have been drained, often consolidating water from smaller to larger-interconnected wetlands. This project will examine whether large basins that receive inflow from consolidation drainage have reduced water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles than those in undrained landscapes, resulting in relatively stable wetlands that have lower densities of invertebrate forage for ducks and shorebirds. Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. Annual information on the size of the nesting population and potential number of young produced contributes long term data needed to understand goose and eider population ecology and better manage these species. This project developed a series of tools, GIS maps, and plots to visualize the unique and complex climate on the islands of Hawai’i. This report descibes those resources and where they are located. These outputs help visualize the long-term trends in the distribution of extreme precipitation across the island chain, as well as changes in the occurrences of very hot days and very cold nights. Overall, the number of hot days has increased across the state while the number of cold nights have declined. The existence of the “Climate at a Glance” web tool, available through NCEI, supports 8 long-term stations in Hawai’i that showcases the temperature and precipitation trends since 1900. Conversion of grassland restored under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) back into croplands is occurring at a rapid rate at CRP contracts expire. A fee-market approach may be necessary to incentivize preservation of these restored grassland by assessing value to ecosystems services such as carbon sequestration.
The objective of this study is to produce a map of invasive fern populations across approximately 35,000 acres of forests in windward Moloka‘i and in windward Mauna Kahalawai, Maui. This will enable the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and partners to control incipient populations of these weeds efficiently and effectively. The Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has successfully completed and in some areas exceeded the grant deliverables. The data has shown that invasive Mulesfoot (AngEve) and Australian Tree Fern (SphCoo) are at manageable levels in the northeastern forests of Molokai and West Maui. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, sensor resides aboard the Terra and Aqua platforms, offering a view the Earth's surface every 1-2 days. The MODIS sensor collects data within 36 spectral bands, ranging in wavelengths from 0.4 µm to 14.4 µm and provides us with imagery at a nominal resolution of 250 m at nadir for two bands, 500 m resolution for 5 bands, and the remaining 29 bands at 1 km. This report shares the results of a survey of participants in the vulnerability assessment and scenario planning workshops that EcoAdapt conducted across the main Hawaiian Islands from August 2016 to January 2017.
