Real-time, high frequency (1-second sample interval), georeferenced water quality data was collected in Utah Lake, Utah. Utah Lake is located approximately 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah, and approximately 5 miles west of Provo, Utah. Data was collected on 8/10/16 over an approximate 6.5-hour period (8:00 – 14:30 h PST) while underway. Sample water was continuously pumped through a pickup tube mounted at the stern of the vessel. Sample was pre-filtered using a 178 um in-line strainer, passed through a de-bubbler, and diverted through a 0.2 micron filter to various water quality instrumentation. Data was handled by a Campbell Scientific CR-6 data logger and recorded continuously to a Microsoft Excel file....

This data release presents the laboratory and field results of a performance evaluation conducted on the Turner Designs, Inc., PhytoFind, an in-place phytoplankton classification tool. The laboratory evaluation included tests that were designed to characterize PhytoFind performance under a range of conditions that may affect phytoplankton fluorescence and sensor response. Laboratory tests included a range of phytoplankton types, morphologies, and biomass; water temperatures; and matrix challenges. Laboratory evaluations on the PhytoFind were performed at U.S. Geological Survey offices in Orlando, Florida and Troy, New York on various dates from July to November 2019. Data from a moving-boat survey was designed to...

The tabular data sets and associated maps in this data release represent water-quality data that were collected between April and November of 2017 and between July and November of 2019 to describe baseline conditions prior to or sometimes following treatments using herbicides or other methods to reduce the biomass of non-native water primrose (Ludwigia) within off-channel water bodies of the Willamette River near Albany and Keizer, Oregon. The water-quality parameters measured in this study included water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total chlorophyll, phycocyanin (blue-green algae pigment), and fluorescing dissolved organic matter in surface water.

In cooperation with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) used various field and laboratory methods to determine the presence and concentration of cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins, and taste-and-odor compounds in selected Texas water bodies. This data release documents the results from water-quality samples collected from 12 water bodies in Texas during water year 2020 (WY20) and 2021 (WY21). A water year is defined as the 12-month period from October 1 through September 30 and is designated by the calendar year in which it ends. Both qualitative and quantitative field and laboratory methods were performed. Analyses included phytoplankton taxonomy, measurements of phytoplankton...

Real-time, high frequency (1-second sample interval) GPS location, water quality, and water isotope (δ2H, δ18O) data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex (CSC), located in the northern San Francisco Bay Delta (SFBD). Data was collected on 10/01/2014 for an approximate 4-hour period (10:30 – 14:30 h PST) while underway on the R/V Mary Landsteiner, a 26-foot USGS vessel. Sample water was pumped continuously through a pickup tube, passed through a 178 micron pre-filter, a de-bubbler, and diverted through a 0.2 micron filter and an unfiltered flow path to water quality instrumentation. The real-time data were recorded using a Campbell Scientific CR-6 data logger. Water isotopes (δ2H, δ18O) were logged to a separate...

Biological, chemical, physical habitat, riparian, and land-use data collected from the Midwest streams by the National Water Quality Project Regional Stream Quality Team. Data were used to develop structural equation models for the purpose of understanding how networks of potential stressors influence stream ecological health. Nutrient and phytoplankton data indicate poor environmental health in four oxbow lakes in central Louisiana suggesting that long-term agriculture practices and increases in shoreline development have accelerated eutrophication. Surface-water quality and phytoplankton indicators of eutrophication were examined at Lake Bruin, Lake St. John, Lake St. Joseph, and False River Lake along an eutrophication gradient. These oxbow lakes are cut-off meanders of the Mississippi River that do not receive overbank flow from the river due to the levee system built in the early twentieth century. Oxbows have formed at various times in the last few hundred years as the Mississippi River carves a more efficient hydrologic route to...

In support of a preliminary analysis performed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) that found elevated nutrient levels along selected reaches of the Mohawk River, one-dimensional, unsteady, hydraulic and water-quality models using HEC-RAS and HEC-RAS Nutrient Simulation Module I (version 5.0.3) were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 127-mile reach of the Mohawk River between Rome and Cohoes, New York. The models were designed to accurately simulate within-channel flow conditions for this highly regulated, control structure dense river reach. The models were calibrated for the study period of May through September 2016 using best available streamflow, temperature,...

For State agencies and other water-resources managers, determining which waterbodies to allocate limited funds for protection and restoration while also maximizing cost benefit is challenging. This data release contains trophic state designations determined from secchi depth, and concentrations of chlorophyll a and microcystin at 232 lakes and reservoirs having a surface area of greater than 0.1 square kilometer in watersheds that drain to the Atlantic and eastern Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States and in watersheds within the Tennessee River Basin. Estimates of nutrient loading (nitrogen and phosphorus, Hoos and others, 2013; Moorman and others, 2014) and flushing rates were combined with waterbody morphometry...

The U.S. Geological Survey monitored algal biomass accrual and concentrations of metals and other trace elements in stream water and periphytic algae at 3-4 day intervals over a 2-week period at 3 locations within the upper and middle portions of the mining-impacted Clark Fork River, Montana, and at one location on the relatively unimpacted Blackfoot River tributary. This data release makes available trends in major and minor trace element concentrations in surface water and periphytic algae, and corresponding trends in concentrations of autotrophic (chlorophyll a) and heterotrophic (ash-free dry mass) algal biomass collected in late July and early August 2015.

Aquatic ecological surveys are valuable to understanding the interaction between the biotic and abiotic components in rivers and streams. However, large-scale assessments of the water chemistry, geomorphology, and ecological community are usually not feasible due to limited resources. Beginning in 2013, the Regional Stream Quality Assessment Project of the US Geological Survey’s National Water Quality Program, began sampling 89-120 streams in each of 5 regions across the conterminous United States—the Midwest (2013), Southeast (2014), Pacific Northwest (2015), Northeast (2016), and California (2017). Sampling included water and streambed sediment chemistry, stage and temperature (Journey and others, 2015). The abiotic...

Optical sensors measuring fluorescence of dissolved organic matter (fDOM) are increasingly used in water quality studies because they provide proxy measurements for a variety of contaminants and constituents of concern including metals and wastewater effluent. Similarly, sensors measuring fluorescence of chlorophyll (fChl) and phycocyanin (fPC) have gained popularity to measure phytoplankton concentration, biomass, and even primary productivity. Optical sensors require calibration using a calibration standard solution which is diluted from a working stock solution. However, preparation of stock solutions is challenging because they are difficult to prepare accurately, need to be prepared in a laboratory setting,...
