Lake Erie walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) recruitment fluctuates annually and depends partially on their diet and growth during their first year of life. To determine how age-0 walleye have responded to changes in prey species and abundance, larval and young of year walleye were collected from western Lake Erie in 2019 and 2014. Larval and young of year fish stomachs were extracted and dissected, with prey contents removed for later identification. All prey contents were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using a dissecting microscope and counted, with up to 20 prey items from each taxa per fish measured (0.01 mm) using a digital computer image analysis system. Zooplankton prey items were identified...

These data consist of juvenile lake trout biological and diet information collected from USGS bottom trawl, beam trawl, and gillnet surveys in Lake Michigan from 2015-2017 and 2019-2022. All prey were identified, enumerated and weighed. Only fish prey and Mysis had lengths measured.

Recent declines in Lake Whitefish population abundance has prompted research to identify underlying mechanisms controlling survival of early life stages in the Great Lakes. In Lake Erie, the recruitment bottleneck window determining year class strength of Lake Whitefish occurs during the first growing season, suggesting that availability of prey could be controlling year class strength. Therefore, spatial and seasonal larval Lake Whitefish distribution, diet, and environmental zooplankton (potential prey) were collected to evaluate larval Lake Whitefish diets at 31 locations in the western basin during 2017, 2018, and 2021. We removed gut tracks of larval lake whitefish and identified diet items to lowest possible...

This data package contains one table with morphometric and diet information for "non-die-off" seabirds captured and collected in southcentral and southwest Alaska. Data pertains to birds captured (live) or collected (lethally) including, bird identification numbers, sampling dates, geographic locations, body measurements, diets (from either stomach contents or regurgitated prey), and sex and age of the bird when discernible. Common Murres (Uria aalge) and Black-legged Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) were captured from their breeding colonies in lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, 2016-2023. Kittiwakes, murres, Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) and Horned Puffins (Fratercula corniculata) were collected in Prince William...

This data set is comprised of one table with sampling information and NCBI BioProject accession numbers for sequence information of this amplicon-based study targeting Loon (Gavia sp.) and fish species expected in lake systems of the North Slope of Alaska from fecal samples. Highly conserved primers which could differentiate species of interest were developed for five portions of gavia mtDNA genes (COXI, CytB, ND1, ND2, and ND5) and two portions of fish mtDNA genes (12S, and CytB). The reference sequences and conserved primer sets to identify species present were developed using publicly available data from NCBI GenBank.

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset is comprised of six comma separated values (.csv) file exported from a relational database. The data consist of: 1) transect summary, 2) nest details, 3) egg float and stage data, 4) chicks diets, 5) chick diet taxonomy, and 6) Gulf Watch Alaska contributors. Version History: First release: April 2017 Revised: November 2023 (ver. 2.0)

These data consist of the fatty acid composition (percent of mass) of adipose tissue samples from polar bears in Alaska's southern Beaufort Sea. Fat biopsy samples were collected from polar bears that were either captured or biopsy darted along the north coast of Alaska or on offshore ice during March, April, or May from 2004 to 2016. The data also include an identification code unique to an individual bear, sex, age class, and the date of sample collection.

These data are estimates of the proportional contributions of bearded seal, beluga whale, bowhead whale, and ringed seal to the diets of southern Beaufort Sea polar bears. Fat biopsy samples were collected from polar bears captured or biopsy darted along the north coast of Alaska or on offshore ice during March, April, and May from 2004 to 2016. Fatty acid data of the above four prey species were compiled from online sources (Bromaghin et al. 2015ab, USGS 2021) and one private source that has been used in several polar bear diet studies (Thiemann et al. 2008). Diet composition was estimated from polar bear adipose tissue fatty acid composition data (USGS 2023) using three methods: the original quantitative fatty...

The Alaska Forage Fish Database (AFFD) is a consolidation of survey data from multiple agencies that were sampled via fishing gear and predator diets. The spatial coverage includes the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea. Fish species within the database include Pacific sand lance, Pacific capelin, Pacific herring, juvenile walleye pollock and Pacific cod, myctophid, squid, and euphausiid. The data package is comprised of six tables: (1) catch_table includes counts, weight, and individual morphological characteristics (length, sex, age) of the sampled species; (2) event_table includes sampling time, location, and methods; (3) gear_table includes specifics about of the gear...
