Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were measured in the lower Ottawa River in 2009 before dredging and after dredging in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. Media collected for analysis included sediment, water, macroinvertebrates, and tetragnathid spiders at 18 stations. At each station 16 surface sediment core samples (top 15 cm) were collected and composited together with a mechanical mixer to achieve a homogeneous composite sample. Mid-depth water column samples were collected using a Van Dorn, Niskin or similar type sampler. Artificial substrate samplers (Hester Dendys) were used to collect aquatic macroinvertebrates. Riparian spiders (family Tetragnathidae) were collected from their webs by gloved hand...

The Lake Powell Coring Project was a USGS research effort, in cooperation with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. National Park Service. In the fall of 2018, hydraulic piston cores targeted sediment that had been deposited in Lake Powell. This large reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona was created after the completion of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. Retrieval and analysis of cores was undertaken in response to the Gold King mine release from the Bonita Peak Mining District in Colorado on August 5, 2015. This event resulted in the containment loss of three-million gallons of mine-impacted waters which flowed from the Animas River into the San Juan River,...
Mass adjustment ratios used for Great Basin mosses Bryum argenteum and Syntrichia ruralis, 2017-2018
The dataset supports a larger study that examined the impacts of three tackifiers (guar, psyllium, and polyacrylamide) on growth of two dryland mosses (Bryum argenteum and Syntrichia ruralis). Moss fragments were grown in petri dishes and subjected to individual tackifiers in one of three possible concentrations (0.5x, 1x, or 2x) of the respective manufacturer's recommended application rate. Distilled water was used as a control treatment, giving a total of ten treatments (nine tackifier-concentration combinations and a water control). Bryum fragments were watered four times daily for six weeks and Syntrichia fragments were watered twice daily for five weeks, after which the experiments were concluded. Shoot length,...

The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, housed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) was developed during a reevaluation of Lake Erie Areas of Concern (AOCs) from 1998-2000. These AOCs were recognized as such by the International Joint Commission (IJC) of the United States and Canada due to their severe water pollution problems. The dataset includes data from both the 1998-2000 reevaluation as well as data from other historical evaluations from the 1980’s to mid-1990’s for comparison where available. Data Description: Rivers and harbors of the Great Lakes have been impacted for decades by heavy industrialization, densely populated areas, and agriculture resulting in contamination, eutrophication,...

The purpose of this sampling was to collect matched aquatic insect and water samples to support metals mixture toxicity modeling. This is part of a larger study that included exposing naturally colonized insect communities to metals mixtures in long-term laboratory toxicity tests, field surveys, and modeling (Schmidt and others, 2019). The Panther Creek sampling was conducted to give a field comparison to laboratory exposures of aquatic insect communities to cobalt (Co) plus copper (Cu) mixtures, the results of which were presented as part 4 of Schmidt and others (2019). The water samples from the Panther Creek area were collected to interpret metals concentrations in the tissues of mayflies and caddisflies relative...
In 2012, a program was initiated using in-stream and aerial (whole-watershed) liming to improve water quality and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) recruitment in three acidified tributaries of a high-elevation Adirondack lake in New York State. Concurrently, macroinvertebrates were sampled annually between 2013 and 2016 at 3 treated and 3 untreated reference sites to assess the effects of each liming technique on this community. Macroinvertebrate communities were monitored at 6 study sites: T16, T8A (50 m upstream of lime application point), T8 (50 m downstream of lime application point), T6 (1230 m downstream of the lime application point), and at two unlimed reference streams, T24 and T20. T24 is of similar...

This EnviroAtlas web service supports research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas). The Biodiversity Conservation category in this web service includes layers illustrating the ecosystems and natural resources that support biodiversity, the need or demand for conservation, the impacts associated with biodiversity and conservation, and factors that place stress on the natural environment's capability to maintain biodiversity. EnviroAtlas allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the conterminous United States. Additional descriptive information about each attribute in this web...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created geospatial datasets of potential culvert locations along with flowlines connected to southwestern Lake Erie as part of the Western Lake Erie Restoration Assessment (WLERA). The Degree Flowlines and Culverts datasets represent the flowline network and culverts in the WLERA study area. Both datasets will be served in the Great Lakes Wetlands Restoration Area mapping application [https://glcwra.wim.usgs.gov/]. The map-based user interface can be used by stakeholders to find potential areas for successful wetlands restoration. Each flowline was assigned a connectivity score describing its level of connectedness to Lake Erie. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections, such as...

This data release contains a formatted dataset compiled from multiple databases on restoration treatments and environmental conditions from across the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) biome. With these data, we modeled the influence of environmental conditions and restoration treatments on trends in sagebrush cover using generalized additive models. We then used these models to create maps of projected sagebrush cover 30 years following wildfire (no treatment, and aerial or drill seeding of sagebrush). We also provide maps for the probability of recovery after 30 years without treatment, with aerial seeding of sagebrush, or with drill seeding of sagebrush. Widespread degradation of ecosystem function and biodiversity...
Eighty-one monitoring plots within the Minidoka National Wildlife refuge on the Snake River Plain in south-central Idaho were surveyed in July-August from 2020 to 2023 to evaluate the effects of herbicides on the vegetation-community across areas that varied in both burn history and background cheatgrass abundance. Surveys consisted of line-point intercept measurements along two 6m or 50m transects with 100 points of observation per line. In spring of 2023 "escaped" cheatgrass individuals were counted in each 6x6m herbicide-treated plot.
With the increased importance of water resources in the western United States and many areas worldwide, the remediation of impacts from historical mining becomes ever more important. A possible process of making decisions about remediation for a catchment might include identification of principal sources of metals in the catchment, classification of the sources as natural or anthropogenic, and simulations to evaluate different options for removal of anthropogenic sources. The application of this process is based on understanding the pre-mining conditions in the catchment, so that remediation goals appropriately correct for the impacts of mining. A field experiment in Redwell Basin, Colorado, provided a setting to...
