In 2015, the second of several Regional Stream Quality Assessments (RSQA) was done in the southeastern United States. The Southeast Stream Quality Assessment (SESQA) was a study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project. One of the objectives of the RSQA, and thus the SESQA, is to characterize the relationships between water-quality stressors and stream ecology and subsequently determine the relative effects of these stressors on aquatic biota within the streams (Van Metre and Journey, 2014). To meet this objective, a framework of fundamental geospatial data was required to develop physical and anthropogenic characteristics of the study region, sampled sites and corresponding...

The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, was constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River (MR). The BCS control structure consists of 350 individual bays that can be opened to divert water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on downstream levees. Lake Pontchartrain (LP) is hydrologically connected to the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound) and the Gulf of Mexico and is more accurately characterized as an estuarine embayment. BCS openings have occurred twelve times prior to 2019 because of high Mississippi River stages, typically in late spring. In 2019, the spillway...

In the fall of 2014 (October-November) the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected sediment samples (suspended and bed material) at several sites on the Niobrara River in Nebraska near the Spencer Dam prior to, during, and immediately after a sediment-flushing event. Suspended-sediment samples were analyzed for sediment concentration and percent finer than sand. Bed sediment samples were analyzed for particle-size distribution using standard classes by sieve analysis. In addition, a Sequoia LISST Streamside particle-size analyzer (PSA) was deployed during the first week of the flush; this unit collected suspended-sediment concentration and grain-size data. Sampled sites...

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were done northwest of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base. ERT surveys were done at four locations in May through June of 2018 to refine the understanding of the bedrock-alluvial aquifer transition zone downgradient from the AFRL. The ERT technique injects direct-current electricity with known voltage and current into the earth using a series of electrodes and measures the resulting resistivity. This technique is generally limited to investigations of aquifer properties less than 100 meters below land surface. Data from other geophysical techniques co-located with the ERT data, including time-domain electromagnetics and horizontal-to-vertical...

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is about 7 kilometers southwest of Boron, California, and covers 320 square kilometers of Edwards Air Force Base. The AFRL consists of 12 facilities for testing full-size rocket engines, engine components, and liquid and solid propellants. The historical release of contaminants from rocket test stands, evaporation ponds, burn pits, catch basins, and leaking waste-collection tanks has contaminated groundwater in the AFRL. Groundwater aquifers near the AFRL are mostly restricted to fractured granitic bedrock, but previous studies indicate that groundwater and associated contaminants have moved into alluvium to the north and northwest. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the...

The State of Louisiana experienced widespread flooding during the extreme rainfall events of March and August 2016. The City of Central, Louisiana, which lies above the confluence of the Amite and Comite Rivers, is bordered on the east and west, respectively, by these rivers. The city incurred extensive damage from both events, in particular the August 2016 flood in which the river basins received up to 30 inches of documented rainfall. Many streamgages in the area recorded peak-of-record flood levels from the event. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the City of Central, created a digital flood inundation map library to depict estimated areal extents and depth of flooding along 14.5 and 20.2...

The Fox River network, which includes Apple Creek, contributes a significant amount of total phosphorus (P), including both sediment-bound P (sed-P) and dissolved reactive P (DRP, also known as orthophosphate) and suspended sediment to Green Bay/Lake Michigan. Most headwater streams of the Fox River are predominantly agricultural in land use, interspersed with rural communities and the industrialized Fox River Valley corridor. Implementation of best management practices on agricultural operations has worked to limit the amount of material that is carried to the stream from cropland. However, several studies have shown streambank erosion to be another source of suspended sediment in these streams. These files contain...

This data release contains a comma-delimited ascii file of 15 discrete discharge measurements made at sites along selected reaches of He'eia Stream and 'Ioleka'a Stream, O'ahu, Hawai'i, on March 23, 2022. These discrete discharge measurements form what is commonly referred to as a "seepage run." The intent of the seepage run is to quantify the spatial distribution of streamflow along the reach during fair-weather, low-flow conditions, generally characterized by negligible direct runoff within the reach. The measurements can be used to characterize the net seepage of water into or out of the stream channel between measurement sites, provided that the measurements were made during stable, nonchanging flow conditions...
