(Hyperlink to Official Landing Page for Geospatial Fabric products) The Geospatial Fabric provides a consistent, documented, and topologically connected set of spatial features that create an abstracted stream/basin network of features useful for hydrologic modeling. The GIS vector features contained in this Geospatial Fabric (GF) data set cover the lower 48 U.S. states, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Four GIS feature classes are provided for each Region: 1) the Region outline ("one"), 2) Points of Interest ("POIs"), 3) a routing network ("nsegment"), and 4) Hydrologic Response Units ("nhru"). A graphic showing the boundaries for all Regions is provided at http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.5066/F7542KMD. These Regions are identical...

Surface-based 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were used to investigate the distribution of permafrost at wetland sites on the alluvial plain north of the Tanana River, 20 km southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in June and September 2014. The sites contained habitat types characteristic of interior Alaska, including thermokarst bog, forested permafrost plateau, and a rich fen. These habitats range from treed to open and vary in groundcover vegetation and peat thickness. Individual surveys used a cable with 56 electrodes at 2-m spacing. At a fen site, ERT surveys were performed across a mixed spruce forest area across a vegetation gradient into an open fen area. At a bog site, surveys were performed...

These data sets also facilitate efforts to characterize in-stream habitat for sturgeon, understand and model dispersion processes, and monitor geomorphic change along the Kootenai River. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) airborne hyperspectral image data acquired from a conventional, manned, fixed-wing aircraft; 2) ground-based depth measurements obtained during a multibeam echosounder survey; and 3) in...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated on monitoring the chloride flux in the major rivers of Yellowstone National Park by periodically sampling the rivers and analyzing chloride concentrations in discrete water samples since the 1970's. However, restrictions of winter travel, great distances between sites, and sampling and analytical costs have limited collection to approximately 28 samples per site annually. Electrical conductivity data can be used as a proxy for chloride concentrations in many of the major rivers of Yellowstone National Park. Electrical conductivity is a measure of the ability of water to pass an electrical current, and it is affected by the presence...

This is the first of two datasets containing derived data necessary to reproduce the results of the associated journal article: "On the Sensitivity of Annual Streamflow to Air Temperature." This first dataset contains basic basin characteristics of 2,673 gaged basins worldwide, along with associated monthly time series of basin-mean precipitation, air temperature, and net radiation. The streamflow data themselves are available directly from the Global Runoff Data Centre. From the inventory of discharge data holdings of the Global Runoff Data Centre, 2,673 stream gages were selected for which (1) at least 25 complete calendar years of monthly data overlapped in time with available climate data; (2) 500-m-resolution...

This dataset includes 1km resolution monthly timescale estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) for the 2000-2015 timespan. These new SSEBop-WB estimates were developed by combining a previously published long-term annual average evapotranspiration map based on water balance constraints with the SSEBop remote sensing ET product (see Associated Items). The combination aims to leverage the advantages of each approach in gaining both the temporal resolution of remote sensing data and the long-term magnitude constraints of ground-based data. This data release also includes other supporting data associated with the publication of these estimation methods in a concurrent journal article. Analyses in the journal article included...

This dataset includes the field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, seston, and sediment collected from Lake Powell, within Glen Canyon National Recreation area (GLCA), during high flow (May-June 2014) and low flow (August 2015) conditions. The study area includes 12-13 sampling sites that follow a transect spanning the entire length of the reservoir from the Colorado River inflow to the Glen Canyon dam, as well as the San Juan River arm, the Escalante River arm and West Canyon. Bed sediment samples were analyzed for mercury speciation, methylmercury production and degradation rates, total reduced sulfur, iron speciation, organic content, and 16S rRNA gene templates as a proxy for microbial abundances....

This dataset contains measurements of dissolved hydrocarbons in various water sources, as well as ancillary raw calibration data showing the stability of the gas chromatograph with an atomic emission detector and flame ionization detector (GC-AED-FID) analytical system over time. Across multiple studies, samples from tap water, groundwater, surface water, springs, mine outflows, and blank materials were analyzed using this system over a period from 2014 to 2017, comprising 172 samples analyzed. In addition to water samples, 183 calibrations conducted over the same period of time are included to document the stability of the GC-AED-FID system over time. The target analytes in this study were: methane (CH4), ethane...

This data set archives all inputs, outputs and scripts needed to reproduce the findings of W.H. Farmer and G.F. Koltun in the 2017 Journal of Hydrology Regional Studies article entitled “Geospatial Tools Effectively Estimated Nonexceedance Probabilities of Daily Streamflow at Ungauged and Intermittently Gauged Locations in Ohio”. Input data includes observed streamflow values, in cubic feet per second, for 152 streamgages in and around Ohio from 01 January 2009 through 31 August 2015. Data from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on where and when water quality samples were taken are also provided. Geospatial locations are provided for all streamgages and sampling sites considered. ESRI ArcGIS shapefiles are...

Record amounts of precipitation fell across the Colorado Front Range from September 9 to 16, 2013, resulting in extensive flooding in the South Platte River and its major mountain tributaries. In this study, the effects of the flood on the City of Boulder, Colorado urban hydrology system were assessed using weekly time-series sampling of 3 source waters (Boulder tap water, Boulder wastewater treatment facility effluent, and Boulder Creek water) conducted from September 20 to October 16, 2012 (n=5) and August 13 to September 30, 2013 (n=8). The effect of the flood on the South Platte River was assessed using a single basin-wide sampling of 5 main stem and 7 tributary sites from September 18 to 22, 2013. Filtered...

This dataset includes 1 km resolution monthly timescale estimates of the contributions to the quick-flow runoff component of the water budget over the time period from 1895-2017. These estimates were developed with a regression for surface runoff data generated from a USGS-developed hydrograph separation program (PART) run on streamflow data from 1301 gaged watersheds as a function of surficial geology type (USGS), precipitation (PRISM), slope (NHD), and soil hydraulic conductivity (STATSGO). The quantities for quick-flow runoff do not include inter-pixel transfers, so do not capture within-watershed variations due to such transfers such as downstream runoff accumulation, but rather represent the portion of the...

NOTE: This data release has been deprecated. In support of the USGS LandCarbon project, field observations of stream and lake carbon gas fluxes and other water-quality data were collected from surface waters in the conterminous US. The sampling was designed to cover a variety of geographic, climatic, and environmental settings to better understand the ranges and distributions of carbon gas fluxes from surface waters. Field observations of carbon gas concentration and flux were paired with laboratory measurements of stream chemical characteristics. Locations were derived from field GPS values or from listed coordinates of USGS streamgages located at the sampling site. Discharge data was either measured in the field...
