Colorados Front Range represents a region of the Southern Rockies LCC that is both ecologically and economically significant. It is home to the majority of Colorados residents, including the major population centers of Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, and provides critical ecosystem services such as clean and abundant water, wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and aesthetic values to the rest of the state. Proposed work will monitor for five years vegetation, fuels, wildlife, insects, and weather at 10 Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) sites, all of which have been treated to reduce either juniper encroachment (woodland sites) or cheatgrass invasion (sagebrush/cheatgrass sites). FY2017Removal of livestock grazing is a common prescription to promote ecosystem recovery after wildfire (and subsequent emergency site rehabilitation efforts). Ecosystem recovery is typically considered from a terrestrial perspective, but wildfire and grazing can strongly influence aquatic ecosystems as well, especially smaller and fragmented stream networks, which are prevalent in the Great Basin (Minshall et al. 1989[1]; Dunham et al. 2003[2]; Luce et al. 2012[3]). FY2014Recent drought, change agents and the spectrum of greater management needs have highlighted the relative dearth of in situ weather and climate measurement stations in the Great Basin. Reports from a project to determine biodiversity impacts of land restoration associated with clean and renewable energy development; specifically, natural gas production through an aerobic digestion of hog manure and native plant material, as being forwarded by Roeslein Alternative Energy (RAE) and Smithfield Foods. RAE has the stated goal of scaling up to restore30 million acres across the Midwestern U.S., but quantitative data in support of their claims of beneficial impacts on biodiversity are currently lacking. The Monarch’s View of a City project will lay the groundwork for design principles to guide the development, testing and deployment of future urban conservation for the Monarch butterfly across the Eastern half of the country. This strategy will need to reflect an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, one that includes ecological and social dimensions specific to an urban landscape. The Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey used U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1:63,360 scale quadrangle maps as sampling units (plots). USGS identifies each 1:63,360 map with a combination of two identifiers: 1) the 1:250,000 quadrangle in which it occurs, and 2) the 1:63,360 quadrangle map itself. Similarly, in the swan survey files, the 1:63,360 map is identified by the combination of the “Map” and “Quad” fields. The Map field identifies the 1:250,000 quad by its USGS numeric code; the Quad field identifies the 1:63.360 map by its appropriate letter-number. USGS_Map_Index.tif is a map version of the USGS map index, saved in an image format (.tif).

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey design transects from 2007 to present. The original transects were created as shapefiles and imported to this SQLite database. Transects were saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.ACP_2007_Trans,” “main.ACP_2008_Trans,” “main.ACP_2009_Trans,” etc.). These aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. FY2015This effort complements a project, supported by the Joint Fire Science Program, to explore relations among cheatgrass-driven fire, climate, and sensitive-status birds across the Great Basin. With support from the NW and SW Climate Science Centers and the GB CESU, we aim to engage managers at local, state, and regional levels, and to involve both field-level and director-level personnel, during all stages of the proposed project. FY2015This project assesses the efficacy of ACK55, a naturally occurring bacterium that decreases invasive annual grasses by up to 70% on test sites. Working with the USDA, USFWS and the Great Basin Institute, researchers plan to treat ten, 1-acre plots on private lands within sage-grouse Biologically Significant Areas to determine the efficacy of ACK55 in warm and dry soils.

Hydrologic data for the Alaska Arctic are sparse, and fewer still are long-term (> 10 year) datasets. This lack of baseline information hinders our ability to assess long-term alterations in streamflow due to changing climate. The Arctic LCC provided stop-gap funding to continue this long time series hydrological data sets in the Kuparuk and Putuligayuk watersheds. Funds under this award are to develop a georeferenced database of the stream crossing structures located within the CLCC and USFWS Habitat Restoration Programs Focal Delivery Watersheds in Puerto Rico: Río Grande de Arecibo and Río Herrera. This information will be valuable to prioritize the removal or enhancement of stream crossing structures for the benefit of the native aquatic fauna and to improve the ecosystem integrity. In FY12, hydrogeomorphic methodology was being applied along 670 miles of the Missouri River from Decatur, Nebraska to St. Louis, Missouri. In FY15, additional resources extended the HGM up river to Gavin’s Point Dam, West Yankton, South Dakota (approximate river mile 811), the location of the most downstream mainstem dam; thus encompassing the entire free flowing reach of the Missouri River and increasing the study area by approximately 800,000 acres. Using this method, engineers and ecologists will incorporate state-of-the-art scientific knowledge of ecological processes and key fish and wildlife species to identify options by which to emulate natural hydrologic and vegetation/ animal community dynamics.
