This dataset includes pesticides and pesticide transformation products in 15 tributaries of the Great Lakes. Pesticides were monitored using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) to estimate concentrations in water following standard protocols (Alvarez, 2010) in June and July 2016. POCIS extracts were analyzed for 225 chemicals (USGS National Water Quality Laboratory schedule 5437, Sandstrom and others, 2016), for which 129 chemicals also have POCIS uptake rates, allowing calculations of time-weighted mean concentration over the approximately 30 day deployment (Alvarez and others, 2008). Collectively, there were 97 chemicals detected, and time-weighted mean concentrations could be calculated for 95...

Hybrid sunflower production occurs near Sacramento in Northern California where seed treatments are commonly used. In this study, four locations were sampled in 2016 as matched pairs; half of each field was sown with thiamethoxam treated seed and half without. In addition to the thiamethoxam seed treatment, all seeds were coated with two fungicides, fludioxonil and mefenoxam/metalaxyl. Both wild bee and honey bee pesticide exposure was assessed by analyzing field soil, sunflower pollen and nectar, honey bees (pollen and nectar foraging) and a sunflower specialist wild bee, Melissodes agilis. Samples were extracted via pressurized liquid extraction (except nectar which underwent a room temperature solvent extraction)...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This dataset consists of drainage basin boundaries for 212 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream sites sampled in the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program, the National Stream Quality Accounting Network (NASQAN), and the National Monitoring Network (NMN). Of the 212 sites, 206 have either a contributing or total drainage basin boundary, and the remaining 6 have both a total drainage basin boundary and a smaller contributing...

These datasets contain all publicly available analytical data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at each location sampled by the Pennsylvania Pesticides in Vulnerable Groundwaters program from 2021 and 2022. Additional analytical data will be appended following the conclusion of each sampling season, and all data is made publicly available in the on-line National Water Information System (NWIS). The Pennsylvania Pesticides in Vulnerable Groundwater program is a long running cooperative effort between USGS and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA). USGS and PDA have sampled for pesticides and a variety of other constituents in domestic groundwater at locations around the state since 2003....

Amphibians living in agricultural areas encounter many challenges. Two factors affecting individuals in these landscapes are habitat loss and pesticides. This thesis focuses on amphibians using agricultural wetlands in Iowa, where row crops such as corn and soybeans dominate the landscape. The goal of my first study was to determine the influences of site characteristics on amphibian presence and success. I used occupancy analysis to estimate proportion of area occupied by four species as a function of eight covariates hypothesized to affect occupancy: fish abundance, salamander abundance, invertebrate density, vegetative cover, wetland area, water atrazine concentration, surrounding crop land use, and overall wetland...

To evaluate the potential uptake and accumulation of pesticides in amphibians, American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) tadpoles were collected from surface water sites (four ponds and one reservoir) in 2021 near Mead, Nebraska. Sites were located in the landscape surrounding the AltEn ethanol plant, a plant which had previously received pesticide treated (coated) seeds. Tadpoles were collected in November 2021, these tadpoles hatched in June 2021. The tadpole tissues were dried, homogenized, and then extracted using acetonitrile at 100 °C. Samples were analyzed for 166 pesticides and degradates using both gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 14 pesticides and degradates were detected...

Applications of pesticides in agricultural and urban settings play an essential role in increasing crop yields, preserving food and materials, reducing pest-borne diseases, and eradicating or deterring pests. Pesticides are transported from their point of application to environmental media, including surface water. To better understand the fate of fate and transport of pesticides in the environment, analytical methods are necessary to measure pesticides in waters. Herein, a method is described for the extraction and analysis of pesticides and pesticide degradates in filtered surface water and paired suspended sediment samples. Water samples (~ 1 L) are filtered using 0.7 μm glass-fiber filters prior to being extracted...

Legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) were assessed in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) tissue and diet samples from three drainages in the Milwaukee Estuary, Wisconsin to understand exposures and possible effects.

This data release includes sampling location, pesticide concentrations in passive samplers (silicone bands) and bees foraging in Conservation Reserve Program fields. Sampling took place during July and August of 2019. Fields were located on private land managed for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program in eastern central Iowa, U.S.A.

Pesticides are widely applied and can enter the environment, potentially effecting non-target organisms. To better evaluate pesticide exposure using non-lethal techniques, a method was developed for the extraction of pesticides and their degradates from small (100 µL) volume plasma samples. Solid phase extraction was used for lipid removal after plasma samples were protein precipitated. Samples were analyzed with liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Samples were spiked at three different concentrations, low (25 ng/mL), medium (100 ng/mL), and high (250 ng/mL) and recoveries of 70 to 130% were achieved across all spike levels for 179, 180, and 183 of 210 target compounds were...
