The information encoded about these features includes classification and other characteristics, delineation, geographic name, position and related measures, a "reach code" through which other information can be related to the NHD, and the direction of water flow. This map was developed as part of the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Natural Hazards Support System (NHSS) which is available at http://nhss.cr.usgs.gov. But although this application was developed by the USGS, it contains data and information from a variety of public data sources, including non-USGS data. Hydrologic soil groups are based on estimates of runoff potential. Soils are assigned to one of four groups according to the rate of water infiltration when the soils are not protected by vegetation, are thoroughly wet, and receive precipitation from long-duration storms.
