In summer 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey partnered with the U.S Department of Energy and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to conduct the Mid-Atlantic Resources Imaging Experiment (MATRIX) as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Gas Hydrates Project. The field program objectives were to acquire high-resolution 2-dimensional multichannel seismic-reflection and split-beam echosounder data along the U.S Atlantic margin between North Carolina and New Jersey to determine the distribution of methane gas hydrates in below-sea floor sediments and investigate potential connections between gas hydrate dynamics and sea floor methane seepage. MATRIX field work was carried out between August 8 and August 28, 2018 on the...

The development and deployment of digital broadband seismographs provides the data required to rapidly assess earthquake size, determine source parameters and better characterize ground motions affecting earthquake hazard. The focus of regional moment tensor analysis is to estimate the moment magnitude, faulting parameters and source depth of earthquakes that are too small to be recorded teleseismically. Thus they have the potential of extending the earthquake catalog to magnitudes less than about M4-4.5. This data distribution provides the details required to critically review the resulting catalog, e.g., the waveforms used, processing parameters and velocity model. In addition the issue of the correct local magnitude...

Observations of irrigated agricultural land within the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin in Arizona. Digitized field boundaries were used to locate crops for in situ verification once in 2022; crop verification occurred on June 2nd. Field boundaries were digitized from U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Imagery Program County Mosaic 2021 imagery for Arizona and supplemented with Landsat and Sentinel2 imagery collections accessed via the Sentinel Hub, Sentinel Playground (https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/sentinel-playground). Satellite images were also used to identify the length of the growing season and crop condition. Water withdrawals were calculated using the modified Blaney-Criddle model of...

To support research on dispersion in river channels, a tracer dye experiment was performed on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 25-27, 2017. This data release provides access to hyperspectral image acquired during the experiment and the supporting field-based measurements of reflectance and dye concentration are available through related data releases. The hyperspectral image data were acquired by Quantum Spatial Inc. (QSI) using the ITRES CASI 1500H imaging system deployed from a Cessna Caravan manned aircraft from a flying height of 1000 m above ground level. Initial geometric and radiometric data processing was performed by ITRES and yielded images with 0.5 m pixels for each of 48 spectral bands...

Coastal Mean High Water (MHW) is contoured in intertidal zones open to oceans, behind barrier coasts in bays, lagoons, and estuaries, and sometimes where tidal currents reach upstream (landward) of the embayed foreshore water bodies. In the National Geospatial Program (NGP), surface water hydrography is maintained in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Flowline Network projects Mean High Water level (MHW) as the linear-referenced 1:24,000-scale resolution NHD Coastline (http://nhd.usgs.gov/). NHDCoastline Geomorphology and associated Risk line-event feature classes that rank the relative risk of horizontal erosion on a scale of 1 to 5 (least to most risk, respectively) have been developed using the Hydrography...

The Wyoming statewide time-stamped oil and gas wells shapefile was developed to provide a historical perspective of drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). This product approximates start and stop dates for each well in Wyoming based on database attributes. These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC). Data represent 120 years of oil and gas drilling (1900 to 2020) and will facilitate a landscape-level approach to integrated science-based assessments, resource management, and land-use decision making. Oil and gas data from WOGCC were used in a dataset previously published by Biewick in 2010 (https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/625/). This product expands...

The application of two management strategies were tested across nine, Class III, wetland catchments located at the Woodworth Study Area (Stutsman County, ND). This field study took place during 2014 and 2015. 2014 was a pre-treatment year and snow measurements were taken in all experimental catchments in the late February 2015, before treatments were applied. Temporary electric fences were installed surrounding each wetland catchment to exclude them from grazing that took place on the management unit in 2015. All the catchments had been managed in a similar manner since purchased by USFWS in 1964. The primary management strategy of the wetland catchments from 1964–2013 was non-use with occasional prescribed burning....

Lifespan distribution in the Chesapeake Bay (CB) salt marsh complex is presented in terms of lifespan of conceptual marsh units defined by Ackerman and others (2022). The lifespan calculation is based on estimated sediment supply and sea-level rise (SLR) predictions after Ganju and others (2020). Sea level predictions are present day estimates at the prescribed rate of SLR, which correspond to the 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 meter increase in Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) scenarios by 2100 from Sweet and others (2022). Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands,...

This data release catalogs the locations of small-scale diamond and gold mining dredges on the Kadéï (Sangha) River, Central African Republic from the years 2015 to 2019. The Kadéï river flows through the Nola prefecture in the CAR and is known to host placer diamond deposits. The dataset was developed through visual interpretation of 387 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes. The point shapefile contains 1,747 locations of vessels, identified by type as either a dredge, idle vessel, or ferry.

Seabeach amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) is a plant species that was once prevalent on beaches of the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast but is now listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For much of the 20th century, seabeach amaranth was absent from the mid-Atlantic coast and thought to be extinct, presumably as a result of increased development and recreational pressure. One region where there has been an effort to restore the seabeach amaranth population is Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), a National Park Service land holding located along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. Here, the Natural Resources staff at ASIS planted seabeach amaranth cultivars for three growing seasons from 1999...

To support research on dispersion in river channels, a tracer dye experiment was performed on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 25-27, 2017. This data release provides in situ field measurements of Rhodamine WT dye concentration acquired during the experiment. A pulse consisting of 72.57 kg (160 pounds) of KEYACID™ Rhodamine WT dye that was 20% Rhodamine by weight was introduced into the Kootenai River channel from a single release point at the Kootenai Tribal Fish Hatchery over a period of 90 seconds ending at 20:10:40 PDT on 9/26/2017, which is equivalent to 04:10:40 on 9/27/2017 UTC. Information on the timing and location of the dye release is available from the KootenaiDyeReleasePoints.kmz Google...
