This data release contains a netCDF file containing decadal estimates of nitrate leached from septic systems (kilograms per hectare per year, or kg/ha) in the state of Wisconsin from 1850 to 2010, as well as the python code and supporting files used to create the netCDF file. The netCDF file is used as an input to a Nitrate Decision Support Tool for the State of Wisconsin (GW-NDST; Juckem and others, 2024). The dataset was constructed starting with 1990 census records, which included responses about households using septic systems for waste disposal. The fraction of population using septic systems in 1990 was aggregated at the county scale and applied backward in time for each decade from 1850 to 1980. For decades...

An extreme flood in 2016 caused widespread culvert blockages and road failures across northern Wisconsin, including extensive damage along steep tributaries and ravines in the Marengo River watershed. Along with the flooding, there were fluvial erosion hazards (FEH) associated with a large amount of erosion in headwater areas. Of special concern were FEHs associated with gullying, loss of wetland storage, and valley-side mass wasting. In 2020, a pilot study was begun to map and classify ephemeral and perennial streams and wetlands in terms of their susceptibility to fluvial erosion hazards. This study combines rapid geomorphic field assessments of river corridor erosion and coupled sediment and debris delivery with...

This vector geospatial dataset contains bounding polygons that visualize the domain of archived groundwater flow models published by the Upper Midwest Water Science Center and attributes pertaining to the associated publication (citation, year of publication, authors, report ID, publication URL), model construction details, and a URL for publicly available model archives when available or a directory pathway for internal model archives. The index currently depicts 115 groundwater model domains across Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin from publications dating back to 1985. Separately published groundwater transport models are not included in this dataset.

This geospatial dataset represents a prototype of a finer-scale representation of the principal aquifers of the United States, using four original principal aquifers in the Upper Midwest, United States, which were re-analyzed and condensed into three updated principal aquifers. The original principal aquifer definitions and extents were published in the Ground Water Atlas of the United States at a scale of 1:5,000,000. The updated version in this dataset are based on a reinterpretation of the original definitions using geologic data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) State Geologic Map Compilation (v 1.1, 2017), which contains published state data at scales from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000. This shapefile includes...

From September 2019 to October 2020 a stream sediment budget and sediment fingerprinting integrated study was conducted to quantify upland and stream corridor sources of suspended sediment and sediment-bound phosphorus using the Sediment Source Assessment Tool (SedSAT) methods with a suite of trace elements. Upland source samples were collected at 45 randomly selected sites in the watershed. Passive suspended-sediment samplers were installed at three sites and sampled monthly. Soft, fine-grained streambed sediment was collected if present at 18 rapid geomorphic assessment (RGA) sites. An inventory of bank erosion and soft-sediment deposition was also done at each of the 18 RGA sites, which were selected to represent...

The U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay collected hydrologic and water-quality data to assess the effectiveness of agricultural conservation management practice (CMP) implementation at Mainstem Plum Creek and West Plum Creek in northeastern Wisconsin. Monitoring data from 2010–2020 at Mainstem Plum and 2013–2020 at West Plum were used to detect changes in hydrologic and water-quality responses during runoff events. Runoff events were defined by hydrographers and used to compute event loads and event flow-weighted mean concentrations of total phosphorus and total suspended solids – all of which are included in this data release. Additionally, changes in these parameters were assessed...

This date release was produced as part of the Milwaukee Area Watercourse Corridor Study in partnership with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to monitor and assess stream water quality within studies of aquatic communities, geomorphology and habitat, water and sediment, and streamflow. This dataset contains two vector datasets of stream geomorphic characteristics, pre-settlement vegetation, and geomorphic setting attributes derived for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 1:24,000-scale Hydrography Dataset flowline network in the Kinnickinic River and Menomonee River sub-basins of the Milwaukee River basin in eastern Wisconsin. The attributes used in the classification of network reaches...
