A monthly water-balance model (MWBM) is applied to simulate components of the water balance for the period 1950-2100 under ssp245, ssp370, and ssp585 scenarios for the Contiguous United States. The statistically downscaled LOCA2 temperature and precipitation projections from 27 GCMs from the Climate Model Intercomparison Program Phase 6 (CMIP6) are use as input to the water balance model. This data set supports the USGS National Climate Change Viewer (ver. 2). The statistically downscaled data set is: CMIP6-LOCA2: Localized Constructed Analogs (Pierce et al. 2023, bias corrected by a modified version of Livneh et al. 2013) Users interested in the downscaled temperature and precipitation files are referred to the...
This sampling frame is a set of grid-based finite-area frames spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The grid for the United States is broken into individual grids for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Alaska is combined with Canada into a single grid. Each country/state/territory extent consists of four nested sampling grids at 50x50km, 10x10km, 5x5km, and 1x1km resolutions. The original 10x10km continental United States grid was developed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in the interagency “Bat Grid” monitoring program in the Pacific Northwest and was expanded across Canada, the United States, and Mexico for the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)....
The Harrat Rahat volcanic field, located in the west-central part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the largest of 15 harrats (Arabic for 'volcanic field') hosted within the Arabian plate. Harrat Rahat is 50 to 75 km wide (east-west) and 300 km long (north-south), covering an area of approximately 20,000 square kilometers and encompassing more than 900 observable vents. The overall map area and its dataset show the volcanic geology of the northern part (about 3,340 square kilometers) of Harrat Rahat, at a scale of 1:75,000. Two additional map areas and their feature classes highlight areas of interest at 1:25,000 scale. Northern Harrat Rahat is of interest owing to the location of the city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah...

This data release is comprised of a set of six time travel map shapefiles (two tsunami evacuation zones and three travel times) and three population exposure by travel time tables (residents, employees, and hotel visitors). The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model from the USGS (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/tools.html). The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This cost analysis considers the direction of movement and assigns a higher cost to steeper slopes, based on a table contained within the model. The analysis also adds in the energy...

The Blue Ridge belt in northwestern North Carolina and northeastern Tennessee is composed chiefly of 1,000-million to 1,100-million-year-old metamorphic and plutonic rocks that have been thrust many miles northwestward across unmetamorphosed Cambrian(?) and Cambrian sedimentary rocks of the Unaka belt. The Blue Ridge thrust sheet is rooted on the southeast along the Brevard zone, a zone of strike-slip faulting along which metamorphic and plutonic rocks of the Inner Piedmont belt are juxtaposed with rocks of the Blue Ridge. Near the southeastern edge of the Blue Ridge belt, the Blue Ridge thrust sheet is breached by erosion, and the rocks beneath are exposed in the Grandfather Mountain window, which is 45 miles long...
This Data Release accompanies the publication "State of stress in areas of active unconventional oil and gas development in North America" by J.-E. Lund Snee (now J.-E. Lundstern) and M.D. Zoback (2022) in the AAPG Bulletin. This dataset provides maximum horizontal stress (SHmax) orientation and relative stress magnitude (faulting regime) information that comprise a new-generation crustal stress map for North America. Relative stress magnitudes are presented using the AÏ• (A_phi) parameter, a single scalar that represents the ratio of the three principal stress magnitudes. Data were collected between 2015 and 2022. Data points for SHmax orientations, relative stress magnitudes, and the earthquake focal mechanisms...

This USGS data release contains (1) geologic-unit top-surface altitudes in boreholes and (2) aquifer-test time-series water-level drawdowns, recoveries, and supporting data from the Piney Point aquifer in Virginia from 2009 through 2015. Extents, compositions, configurations, and geologic relations of six geologic units that compose the Piney Point aquifer were determined from geologists’ logs of sediment core and cuttings, borehole geophysical logs, and drillers’ logs. The Piney Point aquifer is characterized to address information needs for water-resource management in the Virginia Coastal Plain. Information on the Piney Point aquifer can benefit water-resource management in siting production wells, predicting...
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents the geospatial data used to assess the hydrologic resources and the potential effects from oil and gas development in the Bureau of Land Management Tri-County Planning Area, Sierra, Doña Ana, and Otero Counties, New Mexico. Publicly available data were used to assess these resources and effects and to identify data gaps in the Tri-County planning area. These data support the following publication: Blake, J.M., Miltenberger, K.E., Stewart, A.M., Ritchie, A.B., Montoya, J., Durr, C., McHugh, A.R., and Charles, E.G., in press, Assessment of Water Resources and the Potential Effects from Oil and Gas Development in the Bureau of Land Management Tri-County Planning...
This dataset contains count and detection-nondetection data of Barred Owls from 106 historical breeding territories of Northern Spotted Owl territories (i.e. sites) in the Oregon Coast Ranges from 1995 to 2016. Data collected from 1995 to 2014 are partitioned into 2-week periods from 1 March – 31 August each year, totaling 12 possible sampling periods per year. Data collected from 2015 and 2016 are partitioned into 2-month periods from 1 March – 31 August, totaling 3 possible sampling periods each year. This dataset also describes the proportion of total area surveyed per site per sampling period in 2015 and 2016, as well as the proportion of each site with older coniferous forest in each year (1995 – 2016).
Estimates of the magnitude of peak-flows were updated for the 50-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent chance exceedance levels for 91 rural, unregulated streamgaging stations on the main island of Puerto Rico. These stations required 10 or more years of annual peak-flow record, using data to 2017, for inclusion in the study. The magnitude and frequency of floods at selected streamgages in Puerto Rico were estimated using the U.S. Geological Survey PeakFQ program and updated methods outlined in Bulletin 17C (England and others, 2018). Regional regression equations were calculated to estimate flood frequency statistics at ungaged locations using selected basin characteristics as explanatory variables. These...
This dataset contains daily fractional snow covered area (fSCA) at 30-m spatial resolution from August 1, 2015 - May 15, 2020 (five winters) for the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming, USA. The following summary statistics are also included: date of snow accumulation, date of snow melt, number of days in year with snow on ground, and percentage of "winter days" in year with snow on ground. The SNOWARP algorithm was used to produce these data (Berman et. al., 2018; see full citation below), in which dynamic time warping fuses together MODIS MOD10A1 with Landsat level-3 fSCA, resulting in daily 30-m fSCA estimates. All dates correspond to winter day of year (WDOY), which runs between August 1 - July 31 each season and...
This groundwater flow model used a previously developed three-dimensional groundwater flow model (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20165153) was used to assess future groundwater availability in the Northern High Plains aquifer in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In this groundwater flow model, a modified version of a previously published soil-water-balance (SWB) model (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20165153) estimates recharge and groundwater withdrawals for irrigation using climatic, soils, land-cover data. For this groundwater flow model, the SWB output was adjusted in areas where surface water is used for irrigation and adjusted the same as was done through calibration of the previously-developed...
This data release contains several datasets that provide an overview of oil and gas well history and production of the United States, from 1817 to September 1, 2022. Well history data is aggregated into 1-mile and 10-mile squares indicating the total number of wells and counts of wells classified as oil, gas, dry, injection, hydraulically fractured, and/or horizontal wells. Well history is also separated into layers binned on 1-year increments from a well's spud date (date drilling commenced). Production data is aggregated in 2-mile and 10-mile squares that sum the total production of oil, gas, and water volumes. Production data is also separated into layers binned on 1-year increments to reflect the year of production....
