Expansion of renewable energy development is rapidly transforming the Mojave Desert landscape and has the potential to impact Golden Eagles through loss of foraging habitat and reduced prey base. Regional information on Golden Eagle food habits is limited and little is known of how dietary variability influences eagle productivity. We examined diet using motion activated trail cameras and collection of prey remains at 18 nests during two seasons (2014 and 2015). As well as Golden Eagle prey abundance spotlight line transects conducted and data collected throughout the Mojave Desert Ecoregion in 2014 and 2015. The 138 spotlight line transects conducted in 2014 were a uniform 5 km in length, while the 45 spotlight...

We collected spatial data on birds as part of a broader effort to understand food webs in California Estuaries. The survey area was Carpinteria Salt Marsh, California USA, which comprises 9 Ha tidal channels, 2 Ha salt flats, 17 Ha upland habitat, 6 Ha tidal pans, 52 Ha vegetated marsh, and 2 Ha tidal flats. A fixed transect was walked and birds were mapped if they were in the intertidal habitat. We also included some species, like raptors, if they were perched in adjacent upland habitats, but potentially interact with the estuary. With GIS, these data can be used to evaluate bird distributions, by species, in space and time, in this habitat. There are two data files in this release (1) Bird distribution surveys...
Field data for fishes sampled using bottom gill nets and otter trawls and associated water quality variables in the northern part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, USA. Two adjacent tidal wetlands were targeted for sampling: Little Holland Tract and Liberty Island Conservation Bank.

Note: This data release has been revised. The updated version is available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DR22GD. As part of the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Regional Groundwater Monitoring Program of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production, during September 2016–February 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey collected and analyzed groundwater and associated quality-control (QC) samples from 14 water-production wells located within a three mile buffer zone of and in the Fruitvale Oil field, Kern County, California. Samples were analyzed for water-quality indicators, major and minor ions, nutrients, trace elements, volatile organic compounds, naturally occurring radioactive material, geochemical...

The spatial data results of USGS surveys for Least Bell's Vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus, LBVI) along the Tijuana River and San Diego River in 2023 to determine abundance and distribution of vireos to facilitate population trend analyses and collect information on dispersal and site fidelity of banded vireos as part of long-term demographic studies at multiple sites.

This data release provides a map of the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m (Vs30) for California using the method described by Thompson and others (2014). There are two adjustments to the algorithm described by Thompson and others (2014), which is built on the geology-based Vs30 map by Wills and Clahan (2006). In this data release, we use the Wills and others (2015) updated geology-based Vs30 map. The second change is that we have adjusted the kriging procedure so that measured Vs30 values do not affect the predictions across distinctly different geologic units. July 2022 Update (ver. 2.0) Resolution is now 3 arcseconds instead of 7.5 arcseconds Fixed a code error that prevented some of the Vs30...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and California State University-Sacramento, in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board and U.S. Bureau of Land Management, compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity in selected oil and gas fields in California. The data for the Midway-Sunset (MWSS) oil field includes digitized borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of produced water samples from oil and gas wells, core sample analysis from select wells, and groundwater total dissolved solids (TDS) estimations with the related geophysical log data. These data have been compiled from many sources and span several decades. The geochemical data include ion concentrations and TDS...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides discretely measured cyanotoxin, chlorophyll-a, and cyanobacterial toxin genetic data for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through September 2017. Discrete water-quality samples were analyzed for cyanotoxins (anatoxin, cylindrospermopsin, microcystin, and saxitoxin), chlorophyll-a, and cyanobacterial toxin genetics as part of a National Water-Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe potential cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) collected produced water and casing gas samples from petroleum wells and other oil-field sites in selected oil fields in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County in 2016 and 2017. The samples were collected as part of the Water Boards Regional Groundwater Monitoring Program (RMP) of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production. Samples included produced water and casing gas collected from oil wells, produced water collected from surface produced water disposal ponds, and injectate stored in tanks planned for underground injection. Samples were collected from the Fruitvale oil field on...

GPS data collection: GPS measurements were taken at 24 geodetic monuments during September 27-October 2, 2015. The GPS surveys generally followed established guidelines (Zilkoski and others, 1997), except that the data were processed with single-baseline, rather than multi-baseline, software. GPS measurements were recorded at the monuments on at least 2 different days during 1-hour observation periods. Of the 24 geodetic monuments, 7 were network control stations—DUNE, COCH, DEEP, CAHU, PAIN, C101, and G70; GPS measurements were recorded at these seven stations on 3 additional days during 6.5-hour (or longer) observation periods. InSAR data collection: The data set consists of twenty-four individual interferograms...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity and characterizing aquifer systems in and near selected oil and gas fields in California. Data for the Lost Hills, North Belridge, and South Belridge oil fields include production and injection volumes, oil show data, formation pressure data, digitized borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of produced water samples, geological formation depths, and geophysical data associated with estimating groundwater total dissolved solids (TDS) of formation water. All data reported here are used in an accompanying interpretive manuscript. These data have...
