This is a shapefile and the final unioned polygon coverage used to calculate coal resources of the lower Blackhawk Formation in the southern Wasatch coal assessment area. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, reliability, overburden categories, and net coal thickness categories. The final unioned coverage was clipped by the resource boundary polygon, which is described in the metadata file for the shapefile WS_BND.
This file contains geologic units of the southern Wasatch Plateau represented as polygons.

This is a polygon coverage of the outcrop of the John Henry Member of the Straight Cliffs Formation east of 112 degrees of longitude in the Kaiparowits Plateau, southern Utah. This polygon was used to represent the areas underlain by the Calico Sequence boundary. This polygon was also used as the "outside" clipping polygon for several of the data layers including the overburden and isopach coverages. The northern boundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age.
The structure contours were created using biostratigraphic data in the Paleo-Data, Inc., Tenroc Regional Geologic Database. The depths of the microfossil locations were associated with the wells data provided by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. Because of the proprietary nature of the Tenroc database, no actual data can be shown and only those data points contained in the Louisiana State wells database are included in the control points layer. Contouring was accomplished in Dynamic Graphics, Inc., EarthVision modeling software (v.5) using minimum tension gridding. Three custom programs were used to convert contour lines generated from grids in EarthVision to Arc/Info coverages and then to shapefiles....

These ArcView shapefiles contain representations of numerous themes associated with the Ferris coal zones in the Ferris coalfield, Hanna Basin, Wyoming. The purpose of these shapefiles is to allow for multiple theme queries. These datasets were created specifically for the National Coal Resource Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

This is a polygon coverage and shapefile that contains undivided Upper Cretaceous rocks that include (in descending order) the Smoky Hollow and Tibbet Canyon Mbs. of the Straight Cliffs Fm., and the Tropic Shale and Dakota Fm. This coverage shows where these rocks are exposed along the outcrop and are buried in the subsurface in the Kaiparowits Plateau study area, southern Utah. The base of the Dakota Fm. was used to define the Kaiparowits Plateau for areas east of 112 degrees of longitude. The northern boundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age.
The drilling history documents oil and gas wells in the Lower Miocene 1 sequence as a whole and in 10-year intervals. The wells included in this interval are determined by completion date and by comparing the depth of the wells to structure contours of the Lower Miocene 1 sequence. The data are provided in a single file (lm1_prod.shp) as well as eight 10-year interval files covering 1920 through 1999. These datasets contain basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and other...

The drilling history documents oil and gas wells in the Lower Miocene 2 sequence as a whole and in 10-year intervals. The wells included in this interval are determined by completion date and by comparing the depth of the wells to structure contours of the Lower Miocene 2 sequence. The data are provided in a single file (lm2_prod.shp) as well as nine 10-year interval files covering 1910 through 1999. These datasets contain basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and other...

The Pod (or pods) of Mature Source Rock is a critical element of the Total Petroleum System and incorporates all source rocks that potentially have generated hydrocarbons within the system. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province, and incorporates the known limit of thermally mature, organic-rich source rock(s) that is responsible for generating and expelling discovered and undiscovered petroleum accumulations, shows, or seeps within the Total Petroleum System. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock boundary was mapped by the province geologist after studying the extent of the source rock facies and the temperature and burial...
This shapefile includes arcs and polygons that describe U.S. Geological Survey delineated Total Petroleum Systems of the World. Each petroleum system is defined as a mappable entity encompassing genetically related petroleum that occurs in seeps, shows and accumulations (discovered or undiscovered) that have been generated by a pod, or by closely related pods, of mature source rock, together with the essental mappable geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal and overburden rocks) that control fundamental processes of generation, migration, entrapment and preservation of petroleum. Total petroleum systems are described by U.S. Geological Survey scientists on the basis of exploration and production histories, and...

This data set includes arcs, polygons, and polygon labels for geologic and petroleum provinces interpreted and designated by R.M. Pollastro based on numerous literature and map resources.
A cells polygon feature class was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in the State of Kentucky. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown or dry. Data were retrieved from the Kentucky Oil and Gas Well Records database and saved as a shapefile of oil and gas well locations for Kentucky. Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying...

This shapefile includes arcs and polygons that describe U.S. Geological Survey defined geologic provinces of the World. Each province has a set of geologic characteristics distinguishing it from surrounding provinces. These characteristics may include the dominant lithologies, the age of the strata, and the structural style. Some provinces include multiple genetically-related basins. Offshore province boundaries are generally defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour, but where appropriate are defined by the 4000 meter bathymetric contour. In some cases province boundaries are delineated by political boundaries, as in the case of The United States and Canada, because United States petroleum resources were assessed...

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper: Anna, L.O., 1986, Geologic framework of the ground water system in Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on the Northern Great Plains, in parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402-B, 36 p. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Lineament features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Lineaments...
