The U.S. Geological Survey’s Water Availability and Use Study Program (WAUSP) (https://water.usgs.gov/ogw/gwrp/activities/regional.html) supports quantitative assessments of groundwater availability in areas of critical importance. As part of a WAUSP study in the arid to semi-arid Northwest Volcanic Aquifer Study Area (NVASA), estimates of runoff and baseflow were determined for 312 streamflow-gaging stations from 1904 to 2015. Gages with complete water years (October to September) of continuous-streamflow record were used to partition streamflow into runoff and baseflow, which is that part of streamflow attributed to groundwater discharge. For each water year annual estimates of baseflow, runoff, and a base-flow...

This data release presents raw (.csv) and processed (.csv) data files from land-based, frequency-domain electromagnetic induction (EMI) data collected at Bicycle Basin, U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center, California. Data were collected during three distinct time periods: March 19, 2008 (1 survey), December 1 to December 5, 2014 (46 surveys) and December 4 to December 8, 2015 (62 surveys). Data were collected by walking along survey lines throughout the airstrip region of the basin with the Geophex GEM-2 instrument at a height of approximately 1 meter above land surface in horizontal coplanar (ski flat) mode. The EMI data were used to map variations in subsurface electrical conductivity to investigate...
The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 49 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Amador, Placer, Sutter, and Sacramento Counties, California in 2017. The wells were sampled for the Sacramento Metropolitan (SacMetro) Shallow Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. Domestic and small-system wells are commonly screened at shallower depths than public-supply wells. The SacMetro study unit consisted of three “study areas” corresponding to three...

The Chicot aquifer system is a vital water resource for Southwestern Louisiana, providing nearly half of the fresh groundwater the region consumes (Sargent, 2011). The aquifer’s surficial confining unit consists of a wedge-shaped thickening sequence of south to southeastern dipping, interbedded clays and courser material (primarily sand and gravel). In collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD), Sargent and others (2004) extracted data from driller’s logs, geophysical logs, and well construction information for 2094 wells overlying the Chicot aquifer to enhance the delineation of the thickness and occurence of the aquifer’s surficial confining unit. These data were applied...

From July 2011 to November 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Town of Newfield and the Tompkins County Planning Department, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic surveys at 58 locations in the West Branch Cayuga Inlet and Fish Kill valleys to help determine thickness of unconsolidated deposits and depth to bedrock. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast...

The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health are concerned about groundwater contamination in the carbonate-bedrock aquifers with the potential to host karst features throughout New York State, especially relating to the unintended introduction of chemical or agricultural contamination into these aquifers. USGS Scientific Investigations Report, SIR 2020-5030 (Kappel and others, 2020), provides local and State regulators and the public the information needed to determine the extent of carbonate bedrock in New York, the associated environmental impacts of karst, and the means to protect New York’s karst water resources. The four geodatabases presented in this data release were compiled...
The USGS Idaho Water Science Center (IDWSC) completed a report (citation TBD) documenting methods for alternative stream velocity measurement methods. The methods developed can be used to provide low-cost estimates of stream velocity as a component to estimate total streamflow at remote sites. This data release presents data from a laboratory assessment of alternative stream velocity measurement methods This data release includes measurement from several stream velocity methods collected in a flume laboratory as well as a summarized comparison of alternative methods and conventional methods. Velocity measurements were collected for multiple conditions in which the substrate material and the flow rate of the flume...

Bedload and ancillary data herein were used to calculate and compare the bedload-trapping efficiencies of four types of pressure-difference bedload samplers as part of episodic, sediment-recirculating flume tests. The U.S. Geological Survey, in concert with the Federal Interagency Sedimentation Project (FISP), conducted the tests from January through March 2006 at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Bedload-sampler tests were conceived, organized, and led by the former U.S. Geological Survey Office of Surface Water and were part of a broader suite of experiments performed in the rectangular, concrete-lined, sediment-recirculating Main Channel Facility (“main channel flume”)...
This dataset contains genomic records from 184 California Gnatcatchers (Polioptila californica) collected at 18 sites in southern California (USA), 13 sites in Baja California (Mexico), and 17 sites in Baja California Sur (Mexico). Genomic markers were generated from ddRAD loci (Peterson and others, 2012) and analyzed using the Stacks v2.53 (Catchen and others, 2013) pipeline. The genotypes for all samples are provided in a VCF file with 84,125 independent loci and 7 percent missing data. A companion file is provided with sample names and occurrence designations. These files may be opened and edited in a text editor program, such as Notepad (PC) or BBEdit (Mac). The .vcf file can be loaded into the Stacks population...
Numerical modeling was performed to analyze the impacts of potential multiphase conditions on long-term subsurface pressure evolution in subsurface systems. An example site on the Bruce Peninsula in Southern Ontario, Canada was selected due to the large amount of available, high-quality data showing significantly underpressured water and the possible presence of gas phase methane. The system was represented by a 1-D model in which multiphase flow and hydromechanical coupling during the last glacial loading and unloading cycle were simulated. Single-phase flow simulations were performed with the USGS single-phase flow simulator SUTRA, and then both single- and multiphase simulations were performed with the multiphase...

This dataset of 40 square kilometer (sq. km) hexagons was created by the U.S. EPA's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) and is being released by the U.S. Geological Survey for public use. The 40 sq. km hexagons were derived from a grid consisting of a triangular array of points that cover the United States and neighboring Canada and Mexico. The base grid of points had a companion areal structure called a tessellation. The base tessellation hexagons constituted this tessellation. In other words, surrounding each grid point was a hexagon that defines the area within which all points are closer to this grid point than to any other, and the set of hexagons defined this way completely and -mutually...

The Wyoming statewide time-stamped oil and gas wells shapefile was developed to provide a historical perspective of drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). This product approximates start and stop dates for each well in Wyoming based on database attributes. These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC). Data represent 120 years of oil and gas drilling (1900 to 2020) and will facilitate a landscape-level approach to integrated science-based assessments, resource management, and land-use decision making. Oil and gas data from WOGCC were used in a dataset previously published by Biewick in 2010 (https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/625/). This product expands...
