These data were compiled to evaluate the potential impact various environmental conditions may have on native fish populaitons through predation. Introduced warm-water sport fishes present a high predation risk for juvenile native fishes, but observations of juvenile native fish surviving and recruiting in some rare cases led us to question what environmental conditions might be responsible for these trends. These data were compiled to allow for a relative comparison of predation effectiveness between a suite of warm-water predators under a variety of environmental conditions. Mean numbers of prey fish surviving in replicated overnight laboratory predation trials were quantified.
This data release includes both a tabular data set and a zipped file of images. The tabular data set consists of measurements of annuli widths from Walleye dorsal spine thin sections. Walleye spines were sampled non-lethally from fish that were selected for acoustic telemetry tag implantation in several interrelated investigations. The telemetry work was coordinated through the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System (GLATOS, https://glatos.glos.us/). Measurements were obtained from digital images of spine thin sections within the zipped file provided, and can be used to understand the age and growth characteristics of tagged Walleye. These data can be cross-referenced with biological and tagging data...

This data release includes tabular data files. The dataset consists of four input data tables (Appendices A1-A4) for a Lake Superior EcoPath with EcoSim (EwE; http://ecopath.org) model parameterized to the early 21st century using 2001-2016 collections. The data presented here are primarily intended to development a static ecosystem model representing a snapshot of Lake Superior circa 2005 when the bulk of information was collected. Input data were compiled from multiple federal, state, provincial, and tribal agencies, academic institutions, published reports, theses, and peer review journal articles. This dataset includes results from lake-wide Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative surveys (CSMI; CSMI 2020)...
The data associated with the following data release were collected between 2016 and 2017 at three locations on Lake Michigan: Racine, WI; Chicago, IL; and East Chicago, IN. Individual water samples were collected one day a week for ten weeks between June and August. Samples were collected from eight specific sites made up of two river and six shoreline type environments. Sampling was completed at sites where various morphology (embayment, sand and sediment characteristics, size and shape) and hydrologic conditions (currents and waves) were present. Then samples were analyzed using microbial communities (metagenomic analysis), markers of contamination (microbial source tracking), and fecal indicator bacteria (E....
This dataset contains a tabular file of phytoplankton abundance and community composition analysis in samples collected from eight sites in the Western Lake Erie Basin; four sites in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan; and five sites in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. Samples were collected and processed by the Great Lakes Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and analyzed by BSA Environmental Inc. Lake Erie sample collection spanned years 2014-2018 with some sites sampled throughout this period and other sites sampled in only some years. Sample collection in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron occurred in 2015. Sample collection was focused in summer and early fall months and data...
Four data sets are included here to aid in assessing the influence of substrate complexity on kelp forest ecosystem stability. One data set consists of counts of a suite of kelps and benthic invertebrates on permanent band transects (swaths) at six long-term monitoring sites from 1980-2018. A second data set consists of total counts of adult California sheephead (Semicossyphus pulcher), an important sea urchin predator, on these sites from 1981-2018. The third data set gives an index of the relative substrate rugosity in the form of replicate distances along the bottom profile of each permanent swath. Finally, bottom temperatures recorded from 2015-2019 show the relatively homogenous water mass that encompasses...
This data release contains summary metrics describing stream stage, stream water temperature, and short-term climate conditions (daily precipitation and air temperature) for 30 streams spanning gradients of forest and pasture land uses and agricultural best management practice implementation in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and West Virginia, USA. This setting is the first of four settings or "typologies" that will be assessed for the USGS Chesapeake Stream Team project. High-frequency stage and water temperature (5-minute data), and air temperature (30-minute data) were measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from May 2021 to December 2021 and are available on the USGS National Water Information...

The dataset contains long-term and short-term summaries of streamflow alteration and measures of biological condition (fish multi-metric index). Streamflow alteration metrics include the magnitude, duration, frequency, and seasonality of high and low flow streamflow. Biological condition was estimated from the National Rivers and Streams Assessment and National Water Quality Assessment fish sampling programs. Using fish samples, a fish multi-metric index was calculated and categorized into altered versus non-altered fish communities.

The acoustic Doppler current meter (ADCP) used in this study outputs binary data files containing measurement scheme, location, time, velocity, backscatter, boat heading, depth, and other parameters. These data are provided here in the manufacturer's "classic ASCII" format, as described in READMEforADCP.txt file associated with this data release. We also collected water samples for suspended-sediment concentration, with co-located ADCP backscatter data. These data are provided in a separate file indicating date, time, and location of these observations. Data were collected at three locations in Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California: Lindsey Slough; Mokelumne River; and Old River.

Environmental DNA results for water samples collected at USGS streamgages in the Columbia and Colorado river basins. Water samples were collected by USGS hydrologic technicians May - September 2018 and analyzed for presence of kokanee and yellow perch DNA. In this dataset, we report results and applicable covariates associated with each streamgage location. This is version 1.1 of this data release. The Kokanee_Perch_eDNA data and metadata files have been revised to correct for improper attribution of 16 samples. For access to previous versions, please contact the Point of Contact identified on this page.
These data were compiled to assess the size, structure, and health of various populations of Actinemys pallida along the length of the Mojave River. Objective(s) of our study were to determine the extent of injuries and abnormalities within our Actinemys pallida populations (including statistical analyses comparing injuries with turtle sex and size) and estimate the cause(s) of the injuries and abnormalities. These data represent injuries and abnormalities from the effects of physical hazards encountered by turtles in their habitats. These data were collected in the Mojave Desert of California at three separate study sites along a length of the Mojave River in San Bernardino County between May 1998–October 1999...
This dataset documents the length and developmental stage of pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon free embryos from the time of hatch through melanin plug expulsion (the approximate onset of exogenous feeding) reared in the laboratory at a constant temperature. Free embryos from 4 pallid sturgeon crosses and 7 shovelnose sturgeon crosses were reared separately in the laboratory at a mean temperature of 17.8 degrees Celsius (range 17.3–18.4 ). Beginning on the day of hatch, a minimum of three to six free embryos from each cross was randomly sampled and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin at 2 to 12-hour intervals, depending on age. Free embryos were microscopically examined and assigned a developmental...

This is a Data Release containing conductivity and water temperature data for selected springs in the headwaters of the Potomac River basin. This work is supported by USGS Chesapeake Bay studies.
This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during mid-May 2021 through late October 2021 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be...
Endangered Banbury Springs limpet and threatened Bliss Rapids snail populations in springs along the Snake River in southern Gooding County, south-central Idaho, are declining. To protect these species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) needs to understand what affects the species' habitat such as aquatic vegetation, associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in the springs. In cooperation with the USFWS, the U.S. Geological Survey developed surrogate regression models to estimate nitrate concentration using specific conductance, day of the year, and streamflow as potential explanatory variables. These surrogate models provide a cheaper alternative than measuring nitrate concentrations directly, through...
