Water supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities in northern and western Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water supply. Many of the water supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. Mozingo Lake and Maryville Reservoir are water supply lakes used by the city of Maryville in northwestern...

These data map the beach and nearshore environment at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, MA, providing updated regional context for the 2019 CoastCam installation. CoastCam CACO-01 are two video cameras aimed at the beach that view the coast shared by beachgoers, shorebirds, seals, and sharks. These data were collected as part of field activity 2022-015-FA and a collaboration with the National Park Service at Cape Cod National Seashore to monitor the region. In March 2022, U.S. Geological Survey and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) scientists conducted field surveys to re-map the field of view of the CoastCam. Aerial images of the beach for use in structure from motion were taken with a camera (Sony a6000)...

A variety of new technologies are being evaluated to mitigate the spread of invasive carps from the Illinois River to the Great Lakes. In 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey undertook a field-scale interagency study to determine the efficacy of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent (ABCD) in flushing live fish away from commercial barge vessels entering Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. The ABCD is a forced air manifold system that is placed at the channel bed to create a longitudinal array of bubble plumes. In support of this study, the bathymetry (bottom elevation) of the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, was surveyed several...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Marine Sanctuary Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has conducted seabed mapping and related research in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) region since 1993. The interpretive datasets and source information presented here are for quadrangle 5, which is one of 18 similarly sized segments of the 3,700 square kilometer (km2) SBNMS region. The seabed of the SBNMS region is a glaciated terrain that is topographically and texturally diverse. Quadrangle 5 includes the shallow, rippled, coarse-grained sandy crest and upper eastern and western flanks of southern Stellwagen Bank, its fine-grained sandy...

This digital elevation model provides a tool for calibrating tsunami risk to observations of the 1945 Makran tsunami in Karachi Harbour. The DEM bathymetry is derived from soundings made mainly during the first eight years after the tsunami. Although deficient in portraying intertidal backwaters and upland topography, the DEM accurately depicts the sheltered setting of one of the two tide gauges that recorded the 1945 tsunami.

Sugar Creek Lake is located approximately 4 miles northwest of Moberly, Missouri, in Randolph County, and has a full-pool surface area of approximately 330 acres. The lake primarily is used for recreation and drinking-water supply for the town of Moberly, Missouri. An earthen dam approximately 38-feet high and 1,125-feet long was constructed across the Sugar Creek valley in 1922. The elevation of the top of the dam is approximately 754 feet, with a 90-feet wide concrete spillway located near the right bank (west end) at an elevation of 746.8 feet. A previous bathymetric survey was completed in 2003. In cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey resurveyed the bathymetry...
From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

High resolution bathymetric, sea-floor backscatter, and seismic-reflection data were collected offshore of southeastern Louisiana aboard the research vessel Point Sur on May 19-26, 2017, in an effort to characterize mudflow hazards on the Mississippi River Delta front. As the initial field program of a research cooperative between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and other Federal and academic partners, the primary objective of this cruise was to assess the suitability of sea-floor mapping and shallow subsurface imaging tools in the challenging environmental conditions found across delta fronts (for example, variably distributed water column stratification and widespread biogenic...

These data are high-resolution bathymetry (riverbed elevation) and depth-averaged velocities in ASCII format, generated from hydrographic and velocimetric surveys of the Mississippi River near structure A5076 on Missouri State Highway 34 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 2014 and 2018. Hydrographic data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel. Data were collected as the vessel traversed the river along planned survey lines distributed throughout the reach. Data collection software integrated and stored the depth data from the MBES and the horizontal...

Little Sugar Creek is a tributary to the Elk River in Missouri that commences in Benton County, Arkansas and terminates in McDonald County, Missouri. The stream headwaters are located southeast of Garfield, Arkansas. Little Sugar Creek flows through Bella Vista, Arkansas, and runs north to its confluence with the Big Sugar Creek just south of Pineville, Missouri where it forms the Elk River. Browning Creek, Blowing Spring Creek, Spanker Creek and McKisic Creek are all tributaries to the Little...

The natural resiliency of the New Jersey barrier island system, and the efficacy of management efforts to reduce vulnerability, depends on the ability of the system to recover and maintain equilibrium in response to storms and persistent coastal change. This resiliency is largely dependent on the availability of sand in the beach system. In an effort to better understand the system's sand budget and processes in which this system evolves, high-resolution geophysical mapping of the sea floor in Little Egg Inlet and along the southern end of Long Beach Island near Beach Haven, New Jersey was conducted from May 31 to June 10, 2018, followed by a sea floor sampling survey conducted from October 22 to 23, 2018, as part...

In support of U.S. Geological Survey invasive carp research examining aggregations of invasive carp in the tail water of dams, water velocity measurements were made at cross sections in the Illinois River below Starved Rock Lock and Dam on June 16, 2021. A total of 16 cross sections were surveyed, with two transects per cross section. Water depth and crew safety limited the extent of the survey. The discharge in the Illinois River at Starved Rock Lock and Dam at the time of data collection was approximately 185.7 cubic meters per second. The data were processed in the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT) v.4.09 (Parsons and others, 2013) to obtain a depth-averaged velocity field for each cross section from paired transects...
