These data were compiled for a study that investigated the effects of drought seasonality and plant community composition in a dryland ecosystem. In 2015 U.S. Geological Survey ecologists recorded vegetation and soil moisture data in 36 experimental plots which manipulated precipitation in two plant community types. The experiment consisted of three precipitation treatments: control (ambient precipitation), cool-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation November-April), and warm-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation May-October), applied in two plant communities (perennial grasses with or without a large shrub, Ephedra viridis) over a three-year period. These data were collected from 2015 to 2022 near Canyonlands...

This dataset contains taxonomy, density (cells/mL), and biovolume (μm3/mL) data for phytoplankton sampled across the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay (Bay-Delta) beginning in 2016. Whole water phytoplankton samples were collected intermittently during special projects and during routine visits to service continuous monitoring stations. Samples were preserved with Lugol’s iodine solution (2-5 %) immediately after collection and stored in a cool, dark environment until analysis. Preserved whole water samples are sent to BSA Environmental Services (BSA) in Beachwood, Ohio for microscopic identification and enumeration. A Leica DMLB compound microscope is used for enumerating filtered phytoplankton...

The dataset documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients, phytoplankton, and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and Suisun Bay of California, USA. The dataset includes nitrate, ammonium, orthophosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition. Data were collected under different environmental/flow conditions in June, July, August, and October of 2020, and May, July, and October of 2021. The data release consists of a .xml document, and .txt and shapefile documents. Descriptions for each document and file are listed in the...

The dataset documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the San Francisco Bay of California, USA in 2021 and 2022. The dataset includes nitrate, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition. Data-collection cruises were conducted under different environmental/flow conditions. Version history: On 3/15/24, the provisional data files hosted on this webpage were removed, and replaced with updated finalized files.

A discrete sample introduction module (DSIM) was developed and interfaced to a cavity ring-down spectrometer to enable measurements of methane and CO2 concentrations and 13C values with a commercially available cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS). The DSIM-CRDS system permits the analysis of limited volume (5 - 100-ml) samples ranging six orders-of-magnitude from 100% analyte to the lower limit of instrument detection (2 ppm). We demonstrate system performance for methane by comparing concentrations and 13C results obtained by the DSIM and traditional methods for a variety of sample types, including low concentration (nanomolar) seawater and high concentration (> 90%) natural gas. The expansive concentration range...

Data from high frequency sampling of multiple carbon forms were collected in a predominately rain-fed watershed in Southeast Alaska during the main run-off season (May-October 2021). The dataset includes dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, coarse particulate organic carbon, and invertebrate biomass carbon point samples and daily stream flow. The objective of this study was to collect data on carbon export and flow to model watershed export of carbon forms.

The dataset documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta, Central Delta, and the Western Delta out to Suisun Bay in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The dataset includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition. Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions in May, July, and October of 2018. The data release consists of a xml document, 13 text/csv documents, and a zip file. Descriptions for each document and...

Data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex located in the northern San Francisco Estuary to characterize water quality parameters at high spatial resolution. Data collection was conducted on three separate occasions: October 2017, May 2018, and October 2018. Data set includes nitrate, ammonium, ortho-phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, stable isotopes including water isotopes. Measurements were used to calculate evaporation to inflow ratios and water residence time.

Broad-area, high-resolution, boat-based water quality mapping surveys of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and Suisun Bay (Delta) of California, USA were conducted under different environmental/flow conditions in May, July, and October of 2022. The spatial and temporal variability of nutrients, phytoplankton, and related water quality parameters were assessed. This dataset includes measurements of nitrate, ammonium, orthophosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition.

This dataset includes monthly dissolved silicon (DSi) concentration data from 198 rivers across the Northern Hemisphere. Concentration and discharge data were sourced from public and/or published datasets and the Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge, and Season model (Hirsch et al. 2010) was used to estimate monthly concentrations and flow-normalized concentrations for all sites over their period of record. Sites span eight climate zones, ranged from 18 degrees N to 70 degrees N, and vary in drainage area from < 1 km2 to nearly 3 million km2. These monthly concentration data were then used to cluster sites into average (i.e., average of all years) and annual (i.e., each year individually) seasonal regimes using...

This dataset includes average, and annual average (e.g., average of 2020) watershed characteristics and environmental driver data for 189 rivers across the Northern Hemisphere. Average data includes lithology (e.g., percent of watershed covered by volcanics), land use (e.g., percent of watershed covered by cropland), maximum day length, median nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, maximum watershed proportion of snow covered area, precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration, green-up day, net primary productivity, 5th percentile discharge, 95th percentile discharge, day of minimum discharge, day of maximum discharge, and coefficient of variation of discharge. Average data includes maximum watershed proportion...

Surface water quality, water isotope, and phytoplankton enumeration data were collected to evaluate the impact of an Emergency Drought Barrier (EDB) in False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected on six days during 2022 and 2023 (June 7, June 21, July 27, August 9, October 12, November 30, 2022, and February 21, 2023). Sampling occurred in Franks Tract, Mildred Island, the San Joaquin River, and various sloughs and cuts connecting these water bodies. High-resolution boat-based mapping data and discrete water samples were collected and analyzed for: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (orthophosphate), total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus,...
