Studies of marine terraces and their fossils can yield important information about sea level history, tectonic uplift rates, and paleozoogeography. The marine terrace record on Santa Rosa Island, California is complex. Two prominent low-elevation terraces appear to record the ~80 ka (MIS 5a) and ~120 ka (MIS 5e) high-sea stands, based on U-series dating of fossil corals, but interpretations are tentative because of clear indications of open-system behavior with respect to U-series nuclides. Nevertheless, low uplift rates are implied by a preferred interpretation of the ages. The past decade includes some of the most extensive boreal forest fires in the historical record. Environmental drivers include warming temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, desiccation of thick organic soil layers, and increased ignition frequency from lightning. Wildland fires produce smoke aerosols that can travel thousands of kilometers, before blanketing the surfaces on which they fall, such as the Juneau Icefield of Alaska. Wildfire events are becoming more frequent and severe on a global scale. Rising temperatures, prolonged drought, and the presence of pyrophytic invasive grasses are contributing to the degradation of native vegetation communities. Within the Great Basin region of the Western United States, increasing wildfire frequency is transforming the ecosystem toward a higher degree of homogeneity, one dominated by invasive annual grasses and declining landscape productivity. Urban land cover types influence the urban microclimates. However, recent work indicates the magnitude of land cover’s microclimate influence is affected by aridity. Moreover, this variation in cooling and warming potentials of urban land cover types can substantially alter the exposure of urban areas to extreme heat. Our goal is to understand both the relative influences of urban land cover on local air temperature, as well as how these influences vary during periods of extreme heat. This data release includes data-processing scripts, data products, and associated metadata for a remote-sensing based approach to characterize vegetation conditions within a dry, mixed conifer forest study area in southern Oregon in 2001 (a single year drought without any widespread insect mortality) and 2009 (during a multi-year drought that coincided with a severe outbreak of mountain pine beetle; MPB). Ice breakup date is the day in spring when winter ice cover substantially leaves a water body. Local residents deem "ice breakup" as when the ice moves northeast of a line straight across Chequamegon Bay out from Ellis Avenue (State highway 13). Another way ice breakup was determined has been if you could drive a boat from the outlet of Fish Creek to Houghton Point. Burn probability (BP) models the likelihood that a location could burn. However, predicting BP is extremely challenging, because fire behavior varies strongly among landscapes and with changing weather conditions and wildfire spread simulations are computationally intensive and require integration of data with large spatial and temporal variability. Wildfires and housing development have increased since the 1990s, presenting unique challenges for fire management. However, it is unclear how the relative influences of housing growth and changing wildfire occurrence have contributed to risk to homes. We fit a random forest using weather, land cover, topography, and past fire history to predict burn probabilities and uncertainty intervals. Then, we estimated risk at 1-km resolution and monthly intervals from 1990 through 2019 by combining predicted burn probabilities with housing density across the Southern Rocky Mountains. The USGS Precipitation Chemistry Quality Assurance Project (PCQA) conducts research using the infrastructure of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) National Trends Network (NTN). Beginning in December 2016, the PCQA installed and began operating NTN monitoring sites in the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area to study urban reactive nitrogen wet deposition. Precipitation depth data are collected at 15-minute intervals using electronically recording precipitation gages, and weekly composite samples are obtained using automated mechanical collectors. Light-absorbing particles in atmospheric dust deposited on snow cover (dust-on-snow, DOS) diminish albedo and accelerate the timing and rate of snow melt. Identification of these particles and their effects are relevant to snow-radiation modeling and water-resource management. Laboratory-measured reflectance of DOS samples from the San Juan Mountains (USA) were compared with DOS mass loading, particle sizes, iron mineralogy, carbonaceous matter type and content, and chemical compositions. Understanding the effects of climate change is a substantial challenge in estuarine systems because the mixing of freshwater and ocean water adds complexity to climate change projections. Such climate change projections have been conducted in the San Francisco Estuary as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s CASCaDE Project.
