This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for the state of Connecticut. Metrics for resiliency, including the unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, tidal range, wave power, and exposure potential to environmental health stressors are calculated for smaller units delineated from a digital elevation model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing federal, state, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem service potential of these wetlands. For...

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeastern US causing devastation among coastal ecosystems. Post-hurricane marsh restoration efforts have included sediment deposition, planting of vegetation, and restoring tidal hydrology. The work presented here is part of a larger project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) to monitor the post-restoration ecological resilience of coastal ecosystems in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The U.S. Geological Survey Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center made in-situ observations during 2018-2019 and 2022-2023 at two sites: Thompsons Beach, NJ and Stone Harbor, NJ. Marsh creek hydrodynamics and water quality including currents, waves, water levels, water...

Vegetation and elevation data were collected using a real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK GPS) in coastal wetlands at the National Park Service’s Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve in summer 2021 and winter 2022 (n = 362). For each 0.5-by-0.5 m plot, the following data were collected: 1) percent cover by vegetation species; 2) percent cover by vegetation classes based on height (that is, carpet, herbaceous, and woody); 3) mean height of the dominant species; 4) water depth; 5) marsh class based on dominant vegetation species; and 6) location and elevation (that is, northing, easting, and elevation).

Removal of two large dams from the Elwha River, Washington USA, in 2011-2014 released ~20.5 metric tons (Mt) of impounded sediment, ~5.4 Mt of which was deposited in the river delta and estuary. This dataset presents measurements of geomorphic surfaces, vegetation colonization, and plant community development in the Elwha River delta and estuary after dam removal. Geomorphic surfaces and vegetation colonization were estimated from aerial imagery of the delta and estuary in 2016 and 2018. Plant community development was quantified from field plot surveys of pioneer plant communities on new surfaces in 2014 and 2018 and of established delta and estuarine plant communities on older surfaces in 2007, 2014, and 2018....

Twenty-three long-term mangrove vegetation plots were established between 1992-1997 within the southwest coastal region of Everglades National Park (Florida, USA) to quantify tree damage and recovery following hurricanes and to understand the effects of global climate change. Many of the mangrove vegetation plots were associated with hydrology, soil porewater, and soil surface elevation monitoring stations. Within each plot, trees were tagged, mapped, and identified to species. The diameter at breast height (DBH) and status of each tree were measured at one to two year intervals through 2011. This dataset includes 51,730 tree measurements.

High-resolution elevation data provide a foundational layer needed to understand regional hydrology and ecology under contemporary and future-predicted conditions with accelerated sea-level rise. While the development of digital elevation models (DEMs) from light detection and ranging data has enhanced the ability to observe elevation in coastal zones, the elevation error can be substantial in densely vegetated coastal wetlands. In response, we developed a machine learning model to reduce vertical error in coastal wetlands for a 1-m DEM from 2018 that covered Nassau and Duval Counties, Florida. Error was reduced by using a random forest regression model within situ observations and predictor variables from optical...

The marsh-forest boundary in the Chesapeake Bay was determined by geoprocessing high-resolution (1 square meter) land use and land cover data sets. Perpendicular transects were cast at standard intervals (30 meters) along the boundary within a GIS by repurposing the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) Version 5.0, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Average and maximum slope values were assigned to each transect from surface elevation data. The same values were also provided as points at the center of the transect where it crossed over the boundary. The slope values across the marsh-forest transition zone and at the boundary itself provide comprehensive data layers for local, state,...

Prior to removal of pest species from an area, resource managers must determine if re-immigration from another population is possible. Voles inhabiting Saddle Rock on the southern Oregon coast are suspected to be partially responsible for declines in the Leach's storm petrel colony on the island. The island is very close to the mainland, and it is potentially accessible during below-average low tides. USGS scientists Mark Miller and Susan Haig and colleagues used genetic techniques to assess island vole population connectivity.
