Societal dependence on oil leads to increasingly negative social consequences throughout the world, including climate change, air pollution, political and economic instability, and habitat degradation. Reliance on the automobile for transportation also contributes to a sedentary lifestyle, an obesity epidemic and poor health. These problems are particularly pronounced in the USA, which currently consumes c. 27% of global oil production and produces c. 25% of global carbon emissions, and where c. 65% of adults are overweight or obese. Other countries throughout the world that replicate or hope to replicate the automobile-based lifestyle of the USA face similar problems now or in the near future. This paper develops...

ShakeMap is a product of the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program in conjunction with the regional seismic networks. ShakeMaps provide near-real-time maps of ground motion and shaking intensity following significant earthquakes. These maps are used by federal, state, and local organizations, both public and private, for post-earthquake response and recovery, public and scientific information, as well as for preparedness exercises and disaster planning.

The NEIC global earthquake bulletin is called the Preliminary Determination of Epicenters or PDE, and is one of many discrete products in the ANSS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat). We use the word "Preliminary" for our final bulletin because the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre is considered to be the final global archive of parametric earthquake data, in other words phase arrival (“pick”) times and amplitudes.

Subduction zones are home to the most seismically active faults on the planet. The shallow megathrust interface of subduction zones host our largest earthquakes, and are the only faults capable of M9+ ruptures. Despite these facts, our knowledge of subduction zone geometry - which likely plays a key role in determining the spatial extent and ultimately the size of subduction zone earthquakes - is incomplete. Here we calculate the three- dimensional geometries of all active global subduction zones. The resulting model - Slab2 - provides for the first time a comprehensive geometrical analysis of all known slabs in unprecedented detail. ##### This distribution includes models of three-dimensional slab geometry under...

This dataset tabulates input data for simulations of undiscovered copper resources in porphyry copper deposits that were done using the EMINERS computer program (Duval, J.S., 2012, Version 3.0 of EMINERS—Economic Mineral Resource Simulator: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004–1344, http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1344) as part of a global mineral resource assessment. The input data consist of information for 163 permissive tracts for porphyry copper deposits in 7 world regions. A GIS of the permissive tracts and selected data are available in Dicken, C.L., Dunlap, Pamela, Parks, H.L., Hammarstrom, J.M., and Zientek, M.L., 2016, Spatial database for a global assessment of undiscovered copper resources: U.S....

Compiled Vs30 measurements obtained by studies funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other governmental agencies. Thus far, there are 2,997 sites in the United States, along with metadata for each measurement from government-sponsored reports, Web sites, and scientific and engineering journals. Most of the data originated from publications directly reporting the work of field investigators. A small subset (less than 20 percent) of Vs30 values was previously compiled by the USGS and other research institutions. Whenever possible, Vs30 originating from these earlier compilations were crosschecked against published reports. Both downhole and surface-based Vs30 estimates are represented. Most of the VS30 data...

The scenes in this dataset were originally selected by Richard Irish, NASA-GSFC, and were derived manually from Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) Level 1G scenes by Pat Scaramuzza and Michelle Bouchard at the USGS EROS Center. Its purpose is train and validate cloud masking algorithms. Each product is provided as a thematic raster, and includes the classes of “cloud”, “thin cloud”, “clear”, and “fill”. While these validation images were subjectively digitized by a single analyst, they provide useful information for quantifying the accuracy of clouds flagged by various cloud masking algorithms. Each mask is provided in GeoTIFF format, and includes all bands from the original Landsat Level-1 data (GeoTIFF),...

In response to the growing demand for information on the global mineral-resource base, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed assessments for undiscovered resources of selected types of mineral deposits (https://minerals.usgs.gov/global). This data release tabulates data for simulations of amounts of copper resources in undiscovered porphyry copper deposits that were done for the Global Mineral Resource Assessment. For this assessment, 163 areas (permissive tracts) in 7 regions of the world that may contain porphyry copper deposits that had sufficient information to make a quantitative assessment of undiscovered copper resources were considered. Probabilistic estimates of numbers of undiscovered deposits were...

Magnetotelluric (MT) method is a branch of geophysics that employs very large-scale natural sources from the solar wind and lightning. Modern-day MT uses state-of-the-art instrumentation, data processing and analysis tools to provide valuable information about deep Earth structure, complimentary to that of seismic data. These days, MT data also serve as a primary resource for estimation of geomagnetically induced currents, hazardous to modern infrastructure. However, there is a real need to modernize deeply historic MT data formats to a common standard that is fully documented, platform-independent, extensible, and accessible to the broader community of geoscientists. In the past decade, we have led just such an...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, SD developed a cloud validation dataset from 48 unique Landsat 8 Collection 2 images. These images were selected at random from the Landsat 8 archive from various locations around the world. While these validation images were subjectively designed by a single analyst, they provide useful information for quantifying the accuracy of clouds flagged by various cloud masking algorithms. Each mask is provided in GeoTIFF format, and includes all bands from the original Landsat 8 Level-1 Collection 2 data product (COG GeoTIFF), and its associated Level-1 metadata (MTL.txt file). The interpretation for the pixel values...

EXPO-CAT is a catalog of human exposure to discrete levels of shaking intensity, obtained by correlating Atlas ShakeMaps with a global population database. Combining this population exposure dataset with historical earthquake loss data provides a useful resource for calibrating loss methodologies against a systematically-derived set of ShakeMap hazard outputs. EXPO-CAT is derived from two key datasets: the PAGER-CAT earthquake catalog and the Atlas of ShakeMaps. PAGER-CAT provides accurate earthquake source information necessary to compute reliable ShakeMaps in the Atlas. It also contributes loss information (i.e., number of deaths and injuries) from historical events. Using historical earthquakes in the Atlas and...

Data includes cover and presence (within microsites and 13 m radius plots) of three exotic annual grass, Bromus tectorum, Taeniatherum caput-medusae, and Ventenata dubia and presence (within microsites) of four perennial bunchgrass species (Agropyron cristatum, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Poa secunda, Elymus elymoides) within the first five years after the 2015 Soda wildfire. Additional landscape and weather covariates hypothesized to influence landscape resistance to invasion are included.
