Album caption and index card: Hebgen Lake earthquake. This photograph, taken on the morning of August 18, shows an overtuned Cadillac along the Red Canyon fault scarp where it crosses U.S. Highway 191 near the Duck Creek Motel. The owner of this Cadillac and his family had spend the night at the Duck Creek Motel, and were awakened by the earthquake. The man panicked and rushed his family into the Cadillac. He decided to go to West Yellowstone and began driving south. He drove approximately 500 feet greatly increasing his speed unaware of the fault scrap. The car plummeted off the fault scrap, landed on its side, and overturned. The family, bruised and shaken, crawled out of the car; no one seriously injured. They...

Crack in earth at left is not significant. Spillway under concrete slab (center) was damaged, as was core wall. Earthfill on downstream side has been repaired since this picture was taken.
