In spring and summer 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Gas Hydrates Project conducted two cruises aboard the research vessel Hugh R. Sharp to explore the geology, chemistry, ecology, physics, and oceanography of sea-floor methane seeps and water column gas plumes on the northern U.S. Atlantic margin between the Baltimore and Keller Canyons. Split-beam and multibeam echo sounders and a chirp subbottom profiler were deployed during the cruises to map water column backscatter, sea-floor bathymetry and backscatter, and subsurface stratigraphy associated with known and undiscovered sea-floor methane seeps. The first cruise, known as the Interagency Mission for Methane Research on Seafloor Seeps and designated as field...

Open pit uranium mining in Atascosa, Karnes, and Live Oak Counties in the Texas gulf coast region was active during the second half of the 20th century. Understanding the history of these mining operations is important for proper management and restoration. Although some mines have extensive records documenting the locations and extents of mining pits and mine waste-rock piles, and provide descriptions of reclamation activities, abandoned mines with little to no such documentation are present on the landscape. A multiple lines of evidence approach using lidar derivatives and multispectral remote sensing temporal analysis (Stengel, 2022) was developed to (1) identify uranium mine waste-rock, wastewater, and land...

Shallow (300 ft or less) coal exploration drill-hole data from 692 wells located in Arkansas are provided in this data release. The well locations extend over nine Arkansas counties and were drilled between 1975 and 1977, primarily by Phillips Petroleum Company (Phillips). Also included in the dataset are 79 wells drilled by Tenneco. The data were donated to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 2001 by the North American Coal Corporation, which purchased the Phillips assets as part of a larger dataset. Under the terms of the agreement with North American Coal Corporation, the data were deemed proprietary until February 2011, a period of 10 years after the donation. The Arkansas data contained in this release were...

This dataset is associated with a USGS publication "Assessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources in the Eagle Ford Group and Associated Cenomanian-Turonian Strata, U.S. Gulf Coast, Texas, 2018" and summarizes data generated by the author for the publication using IHS Harmony DeclinePlus software. Data includes average estimated ultimate recoveries per square mile for three continuous oil assessment units with location information. Data is derived from IHS Markit data. No proprietary information is contained in this release.

From October 2017 to June 2018, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected 101 surficial sediment samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, ephemeral channels below wastepiles, nearby outcrops, and background areas representative of the undisturbed lithology in the Browns Park mining district of northeastern Utah. Additionally, twelve sediment samples were collected in drainages associated with legacy sample locations from the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) program (reformatted by Smith, 2006). The Browns Park district is in the eastern arch of the Uinta Mountain Range, north of the Green River, and approximately 5 miles west of the...

Biochar is a carbon-rich substance that is derived through the thermochemical conversion of biomass. Biochar is recognized for its significance in environmental applications and sustainable agriculture. In an effort to comprehend how the source material and pyrolysis parameters influence its properties, reflected light microscopy is being used to produce microscopic images for analysis of selected physical and chemical properties. An atlas of microscopic images of biochar has been compiled by the Indiana Geological and Water Survey at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA, containing more than 300 images contributed by researchers across the globe. USGS contributed 13 photomicrograph images from two biochar source...
