The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Cook County Bureau of Technology (BOT), prioritized waterbodies (lakes, rivers, and canals) of interest within Cook County to survey in 2022. These surveys describe the bathymetry and basic water-quality conditions observed, and could be used by the BOT to assist with resource management decisions and uses, as well as build an inventory that could be shared with other local governmental agencies. Waterbodies surveyed in 2022 and included in this data release are: Arrowhead Lake, Axehead Lake, Baker's Lake, Belly Deep Slough, Bode Lake North, Bode Lake South, Bull Frog Lake, Busse Lake Main Pool, Busse Lake North Pool, Busse Lake South Pool, Busse Woods...

This data set represents an ecological and laboratory-based experiment to understand influenza virus viability in surface water. Data tables included in this release consist of 1) daily mean water temperature, 2) viability of viruses maintained in water, 3) influenza detection in duck samples, 4) viral titers of experimentally inoculated water samples, and 5) water chemistry.

Wetlands are frequently used in the U.S. for treating nitrate in agricultural runoff. However, numerous other biologically active contaminants, such as antibiotics and nitrification inhibitors, regularly co-occur with nitrate and many can affect the efficiency of nitrate removal. This project evaluated the discrete and combined effects of specific veterinary and human antibiotics and a common nitrification inhibitor (nitrapyrin) on nitrate-N treatment efficiency in saturated sediments and floating treatment wetlands. Sediment and water samples were collected from 3 locations at the USDA Meat Animal Research Facility near Clay Center NE in August 2019 for assessment of background conditions in order to determine...

Data files contain the simulated mean daily environmental conditions experienced by particles (which can be assumed to be planktonic larval alewife or yellow perch) in Lake Michigan during March 15 - July 31 of past and future years. Simulations were generated by integrating a series of climatic, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, and Lagrangian particle dispersion (LPD) models. For each year, 42,765 particles (i.e., each representing a theoretical larval fish) were released from coastal and nearshore locations and tracked sub-hourly for 50-days following their release. Each year's dataset summarizes individual particle experiences (e.g., light, zooplankton prey, temperature) into daily averages.

The Spor Mountain study area is located in the Spor Mountain Range, approximately 42 miles northwest of Delta, Utah. Mining in the Spor Mountain district began in the 1940s and continues to present day. Fluorspar, uranium, and beryllium are the main ores mined(Ege, 2005). From August through September 2013, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected a total of 73 samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, channel sediments downslope of wastepiles, and background areas. The samples were sieved to obtain the less than 177 micron fraction. Geochemical analyses were completed through a third-party contract by General Society of Surveillance (SGS) with method ICM40B - Fifty-five major (except Si and Na), rare...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents tabular data on nitrogen concentrations and loads for multiple nitrogen species, and river discharge data used in the analysis of data collected from October 1994 to September 2021. Data on flow and nitrogen concentrations were analyzed using the USGS Exploration and Graphics for RivEr Trends (EGRET) R package, and the method of Weighted Regression on Time Discharge and Season (WRTDS). Data and outputs summarized are for water-quality data collected from 17 water-quality monitoring stations in the Long Island Sound watershed. Specific data in tabular format for this release include: calculated annual nitrogen concentration and loads, calculated annual flow-normalized...

This data release contains three files. The first (Table S1 Bibliography Dataset) contains the entire bibliography for the 435 publications examined for potential inclusion into at least one of the meta-analyses for the effects of environmental mercury (Hg) on birds. For those 168 publications that were included in at least one meta-analysis, the worksheet titled Bibliography contains data describing each sub-dataset, including the type of study, data extraction methods, biological endpoints measured, age class, tissue-residue Hg concentrations, dosing Hg concentrations, the measured effect of Hg, bird taxonomy, life history, and the study’s citation. The worksheet titled Header Explanation describes each column...
