This section of the data release includes core images in the format of photos (JPG) that have been compressed into a zipped file (2018LakePowellCoring_CorePhotos.zip). It is Part 4 (of four) in this data release and contains images of the cleaned archival half from split cores as they appeared immediately after splitting (late March and early April 2019). Each photo includes a ruler (in centimeters) and X-Rite ColorChecker Classic color correction card that may be used for corrections. This section of the data release includes drillhole information in the format of a comma-separated value (CSV) file (2018LakePowellCoring_DrillholeInfo.csv). It is Part 1 (of four) in this data release and represents the broadest hierarchical information on the dataset including the drillhole name, location, water depth, sediments top and bottom, drillhole depth, and recovery for each coring location. Development of a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the pre-Glen Canyon Dam topography in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah and Arizona was initiated to assist the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in its Lake Powell coring program in the fall of 2018 (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ut-water/science/lake-powell-coring). Most current conservation literature focuses on the preservation of hotspots of species diversity and endemism, as if the two were geographically synonymous. At landscape scales this may not be the case. We collected data from 367 1000-m2 plots in the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, Utah, USA, to show that: (1) the vast majority of plant species are locally rare; (2) species-rich areas are generally in rare, mesic, or high-elevation habitats such as aspen stands or riparian zones high in soil N and P; (3) endemic species (to the Colorado Plateau and the Monument) were generally found in relatively species-rich, but low-elevation, xeric vegetation type areas low in soil P; (4) unique species assemblages...

Over the last century there has been marked expansion and infilling of pinyon (Pinus spp.)–juniper (Juniperus spp.) woodlands into grassland and shrubland ecosystems across the western United States. The Lake Powell Coring Project was a USGS research effort, in cooperation with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. National Park Service. In the fall of 2018, hydraulic piston cores targeted sediment that had been deposited in Lake Powell. This large reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona was created after the completion of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. Retrieval and analysis of cores was undertaken in response to the Gold King mine release from the Bonita Peak Mining District in Colorado on August 5, 2015. This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase?Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. Many studies have quantified plant invasions by determining patterns of non-native species establishment (i.e. richness and absolute cover). Until recently, dominance has been largely overlooked as a significant component of invasion. Therefore, we re-examined a 6-year data set of 323 0.1 ha plots within 18 vegetation types collected in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument from 1998 to 2003, including dominance (i.e. relative cover) in our analyses. We specifically focused on the non-native species Bromus tectorum, a notable dominant annual grass in this system.
