This data set includes results for hormone and pharmaceutical compounds analyzed in environmental and quality-control samples collected by the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment Project during 2013 through 2015 for a study of groundwater resources used for drinking-water supply across the United States. Hormone and pharmaceutical results are provided for environmental samples collected at 1,120 wells or springs; selected ancillary data, such as principal aquifer, well depth, and land-use information also are provided for the sampled sites. The types of quality-control samples included in this data set are blanks, matrix spikes, and replicates collected at field sites or field offices. Included in this data...

Chemical and microbiological results, quality assurance and quality control, site location, and method information for surface water, bed sediment, and wastewater effluent collected from 34 stream locations across Iowa (United States). Environmental samples were analyzed for a suite of 29 antibiotics, plated on selective media for 15 types of bacteria growth, and DNA was extracted from culture growth and used in downstream polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the detection of 24 antibiotic resistance genes. Environmental field data were collected in-situ for water temperature (°C), specific conductivity (µs/cm), dissolved oxygen (mg/L), pH (standard units), and turbidity (FNU) using a multiparameter sonde...
A previously completed mineral resources assessment of the Texas Coastal Plain indicated the potential for future discovery of uranium resources. Composite hydrogeologic frameworks can be used in geoenvironmental assessments as a tool to understand potential effects of mining operations. Data for a composite hydrogeologic framework are documented in this data release. The hydrogeologic framework focused on the composite hydrogeologic unit consisting of the upper part of the Miocene-age Fleming Formation/Lagarto Clay, Pliocene-age Goliad and Pleistocene-age Willis Sands, Pleistocene-age Lissie and Beaumont Formations, and Holocene-age alluvial sediments (fluvial alluvium and eolian sand deposits). This composite...
This dataset provides the water-quality results for organic and inorganic concentrations analyzed from samples collected at domestic and commercial tapwater faucets and one spring, sourced in Puerto Rico. Samples were collected in October, 2017 and August and December, 2018 from 19 locations. Samples were analyzed at various U.S. Geological Survey laboratories: the National Water Quality Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for organic compounds; the Redox Chemistry Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado for inorganic constituents; the Organic Geochemistry Laboratory in Lawrence, Kansas for microcystin and pesticides including glyphosate and atrazine; the Organic Chemistry Research Laboratory in Sacramento, California for disinfection...

Management of petroleum-impacted waters by monitored natural attenuation (MNA) requires an understanding of the toxicology of both the original compounds released as well as the transformation products formed during natural breakdown. Here, we report data from a groundwater plume consisting of a mixture of crude oil compounds and transformation products resulting from a crude-oil release in August, 1979 near Bemidji, MN, USA. Water samples were characterized for activation of 52 human nuclear receptor (NR) activities and 50 transcriptional pathways associated with toxic responses. Five replicate analyses were performed for each solution at strengths of 1, 3, and 10 times the sample concentration. Radar plots of...

In early May 2018, activity at Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii, increased, with heightened ash production from the summit commencing on May 17. Volcanic ash can scavenge volatile components from volcanic plumes, resulting in the deposition of potentially harmful elements during ash fallout. Leaching of these species (e.g., by rainfall or in water catchment systems) can have implications for agriculture, water resources and human health. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is sampling volcanic ash and utilizing ash leachate analyses as part of the assessment of hazards from the ongoing eruption of Kīlauea Volcano. We acquired 30 ash samples erupted from the summit of Kīlauea Volcano and collected downwind between May 10...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, collected data in 2017 to study the sources and occurrences of continual detections of high Escherichia coli (E. coli) detections at urban beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline in northwest Indiana and northeastern Illinois. High E. coli detections cause the beaches to be closed for recreational use until additional samples verify that E. coli levels have fallen below the threshold of 235 counts per 100 ml. The project used microbial source tracking (MST) and metagenomics analyses to evaluate the sources of E. coli. This data release provides the phytoplankton, mictobial source tracking, and metagenomics components...

This data set includes results for hormone and pharmaceutical compounds analyzed in laboratory quality-control samples associated with environmental samples collected by the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project during 2013 through 2015 for a study of groundwater resources used for drinking-water supply across the United States. Hormone and pharmaceutical results are provided for laboratory set blanks and reagent spikes analyzed during a time period that encompasses laboratory analysis of the environmental samples collected by NAWQA. Included in this data release are the following data tables: Table 1. Hormone results for laboratory set blanks, December 18, 2012 through March 7, 2016. Table 2. Pharmaceutical...

Groundwater samples were collected in June 2018 from a background (reference) well located 200 m upgradient from the source and five wells along a flowline in the plume at 39, 68, 102, 125, and 254 m downgradient from the source. Before sampling, at least three times the water volume in the well casing was purged and field parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, and pH) were stable. Two samples from each well were collected into unpreserved 1 L amber bottles and shipped on ice overnight to a commercial lab. The two samples were extracted using dichloromethane (DCM; EPA Method 3510). One sample extract was treated with silica gel cleanup (SGC) column (USEPA method 3630C). Aliquots of the...

This data set contains the result for inorganic constituents and organic compounds collected from tapwater locations, as well as water filtration plants, in East Chicago, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois in 2017. Additionally quality assurance data collected was summarized. Residential samples collected were done so directly from residential kitchen taps (faucets) as is, it was noted if a point-of-use filtration device was utilized by the homeowner, but they were not removed for sampling. Samples were collected at various times of the day, without regard to previous water use. Results were analyzed using ToxCast, and Exposure Activity Ratios (EARs) are presented. Water filtration plant samples were taken from Lake...
