(NWI) protocols to provide complete NWI coverage for the state of Idaho. Where hard copy maps are unavailable, habitat will be interpreted and digital data will be completed by contractors/cooperators.Main goal is to develop digital data compliant with NWI protocol for wetlands and riparian habitats in Montana and Idaho. Existing hard copy maps will be digitized according to standard NWI protocols to provide complete NWI coverage for the state of Idaho. Where hard copy maps are unavailable, habitat will be interpreted and digital data will be completed by contractors/cooperators.
Version 2.0 Data Viewer for the South Atlantic Create a Version 2.0 Simple Viewer for the South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint that includes updates, additional data (category priorities, actions, justifications, ownership, and partner data), and dynamic charting of indicators and presentation of ecosystem and analysis unit aggregate indicator scores. Continue to refine and improve the South Atlantic Conservation Planning Atlas (salcc.databasin.org) Provide technical guidance and recommendations about how to structure data and future Viewer platforms to achieve specific functions for future versions of the Blueprint hosted within an interactive viewer and the South Atlantic Conservation Planning Atlas.

The GeoAdaptive and GeoDesign scenarios were extended to the state of Florida line and incorporated CLIP 3.0 into the scenarios for the ecological input. The scenarios will consist of urbanization level of 31,000,000 people by 2060 and sea level rise of 1.0m, and policies and assumptions such a build first conserve second (BAU) and conserve first build second (proactive). The type of conservation was varied; fee simple purchase and easement percentages. The first scenario had a 50/50 split between fee simple purchase and easements and the second and third scenario had 90% easement and 10% fee simple purchase. The difference in scenario was in the process of conservation (CLIP priority area 1 or Florida Forever land...

In June 2015, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) granted $80,000 to the City of St. Louis (City) to promote urban monarch conservation by expanding activities associated with Milkweeds for Monarchs: The St. Louis Butterfly Project (M4M). Generally speaking, the USFWS grant was to: (1) enhance urban education and outreach efforts, and (2) conduct research on urban monarch habitat. The project spent $51,583.57 on activities for ed and $27,785.68 for research. The City’s Office of the Mayor used a portion of the funds to contract a part time individual to act as a Monarch Community Liaison, and used the majority of the grant...

This funding will be used to hire 1 GS 9/11 staff member to work directly with local governments (Soil & Water Conservation Districts) to enroll landowners in priority habitats in existing Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs) and in Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs) on their adjacent BLM allotments. Once enrolled, state and other federal funding sources are available to support sagebrush habitat enhancement projects that address invasive species, fire, juniper encroachment and other threats. The additional capacity is expected to result in an additional +100 landowners enrollments.

Under this agreement, the Mr Hankla developed and facilitated implementation of pilot programs addressing the conservation objectives of the PFLCC within the economic sideboards and regulatory constraints impacting private landowners. These pilot programs are applicable to a range of landowners (owners of both large and small parcels), and a diversity of land management and land use interests from high intensity agriculture and development to low intensity grazing and forestry.

A strategy has been suggested for developing regionally specific Rapid Assessment Methods (RAMs) to evaluate wildlife-related issues associated with wind development at specific sites. The RAMs are anticipated to be appropriate for use in situations identified as Tier 1 (preliminary evaluation or screening of potential sites) by the Federal Advisory Committee to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A Rapid Assessment Methodology specifically for the U.S. portion of Bird Conservation Region 11, the Prairie Pothole Region, has been developed as a pilot test of the strategy. It has been reviewed by several individuals familiar with the wildlife issues of the region. Discussions are underway regarding integrating the...
The PFLCC has recently completed a set of comprehensive conservation planning scenarios for the state of Florida. This represents the first statewide effort to assess likely alternative futures for conservation considering an array of financial, biological, climatological and urbanistic conditions. These spatially explicit and temporal scenarios simulate both urban growth and climate change and identify the most suitable areas for conservation given the resulting land use pattern. Conservation allocations are based on both fee-title and conservation easements. The conservation priorities and mechanisms expressed in these scenarios are based on a wide set of contributing factors, and simulated conservation is purposefully...

As part of the Genoa National Fish Hatchery Native Freshwater Mussel Restoration Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service researchers utilized advanced technology in mobile rearing to evaluate how different water sources support growth and survival of young freshwater mussels. A mobile aquatic rearing station, or MARS, was deployed along the banks of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin in the summer of 2012 to raise rare and endangered mussel species, including Higgins’ eye pearlymussel, hickorynut, black sandshell and snuffbox. Information gathered will provide a knowledge base for the operation of the trailer moving forward, and will help ultimately optimize rearing techniques in light of expanding natural resource...

Today more than 80% of Americans live in urban areas and by 2050 it is estimated that 70% of the world’s population will call a city ‘home’. Our cities are built on lands and river systems that connect to larger natural areas. The protection of that land and water is vital for a city’s economy and the health and well-being of its urban residents. Ecological Places in Cities, EPiC, is a network of cities and conservation groups working together towards a new vision that integrates nature’s benefits and natural defenses with the needs of our urban future. We use advanced urban planning approaches along with innovative civic leadership to ensure that urban nature and our future generations can grow and thrive together.
Innovative Conservation incentives beyond easements and fee simple purchase are needed for conservation in Florida. In east central Florida, citrus farm owners and agencies have developed a method of storing additional water on shallow citrus groves called water farming. This water storage will help remove harmful point source discharges to the Indian River Lagoon. In support of the development and implementation of wildlife regulatory assurance for Dispersed Water Management (DWM) projects in the Northern Everglades, especially for Water Farmers in the St. Lucie River and Estuary Watershed, the PI provided coordination to support development of a multi-party agreement among USFWS, FWC, FDACS, SFWMD, SJRWMD, and...

The purpose of Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) is to inform the management of natural and cultural heritage resources in response to shifts in climate, habitat fragmentation and loss, and other landscape level challenges. The South Atlantic LCC’s mission is to “create a shared blueprint for landscape conservation actions that sustain natural and cultural resources” (South Atlantic LCC 2014) and to this end, has contracted with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to release the first version of the Conservation Blueprint using the Data Basin (databasin.org) platform. The South Atlantic LCC seeks to iteratively refine the Conservation Blueprint and release future versions as necessary to achieve their...

The Monarch’s View of a City project will lay the groundwork for design principles to guide the development, testing and deployment of future urban conservation for the Monarch butterfly across the Eastern half of the country. This strategy will need to reflect an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, one that includes ecological and social dimensions specific to an urban landscape. Pilot design projects at various scales in at least two cities will advance the state of science for developing landscape conservation design (LCD) guidelines for monarch butterfly conservation in urban areas as described below. While the ETPBR LCC, working through US Fish & Wildlife Service staff, will select cities and manage...
