The Yukon North Slope is an arctic “hot spot” of climate change-induced effects with profound significance for the Inuvialuit and the larger region. In 1984, the Inuvialuit entered into a land claim agreement – the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) – with the governments of Canada, Yukon and Northwest Territories. A co-management body formed to make a plan, which was developed in 2003 but never ratified and is now considered out-of-date. This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues.

The Highly Altered Areas Mask is an input of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. For all of our input indicator layers, we use this mask to remove the most highly altered areas on the landscape from our datasets. These areas include the highest-intensity urban development, plus large roads. The ShoreZone in the Classroom Curriculum Implementation project built upon the ShoreZone in the Classroom Pilot Networking Trip. Educational Consultant Marie Acemah liaised over email and in-person at the North Slope School District (NSBSD) Curriculum Camp in Barrow to develop Curricular Units that make ShoreZone available as an educational tool in NSBSD classrooms. This project resulted in two Units, specifically: 1) Coastal Ecosystems Unit; and 2) Documentary Filmmaking Summer Intensive Proposal. The Beaufort Sea coast in Arctic Alaska and neighboring northern Canada has recently experienced extreme and accelerated climate change, including a dramatic reduction in summer sea ice. The Beaufort Sea coast in arctic Alaska and neighboring northern Canada has recently experienced extreme and accelerated climate change, including a dramatic reduction in summer sea ice (Gildor and Tziperman 2003, Holland et al. 2006). This absence of ice allows increased wind and wave energy to directly affect the coast, resulting in island and mainland flooding, coastal erosion, and further movement of barrier islands and beaches. The period each year in which the arctic is free of summer ice is increasing and is predicted to increase non-linearly in the future. Bering Sea storms introduce various environmental conditions that adversely affect human activity and infrastructure in the coastal zone and the ecosystems they depend upon. Storm impacts include interactions with sea ice in all potential states: large floes, shore-fast ice, and incipient sea-ice in frazil or slush state. In particular, sea ice can act to enhance or mitigate the impacts of adverse marine state, even as the event is occurring. The Midwest Conservation Blueprint Ecoregions are an input for the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. Before calculating the regional priority areas for conservation, we stratify the Midwest Landscape into Ecoregions. This polygon layer contains the spatial boundaries of the ecoregions used for the stratification. Breaking down the Midwest Landscape into Ecoregions reduces processing time of our spatial planning software and ensures a fairer comparison of indicators across an ecologically diverse region.
