Water, bed sediment, and biota were sampled in selected streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana, as part of a monitoring program in the upper Clark Fork Basin of western Montana. The sampling program was led by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

In the fall of 2014 (October-November) the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected sediment samples (suspended and bed material) at several sites on the Niobrara River in Nebraska near the Spencer Dam prior to, during, and immediately after a sediment-flushing event. Suspended-sediment samples were analyzed for sediment concentration and percent finer than sand. Bed sediment samples were analyzed for particle-size distribution using standard classes by sieve analysis. In addition, a Sequoia LISST Streamside particle-size analyzer (PSA) was deployed during the first week of the flush; this unit collected suspended-sediment concentration and grain-size data. Sampled sites...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, conducted a study to establish baseline water-quality conditions and bed-sediment chemistry in Currituck Sound, North Carolina, prior to construction of the Mid-Currituck Bridge. This Data Release contains the associated data described in the Open-File Report, “Characterization of Water-Quality and Bed-Sediment Conditions in Currituck Sound, North Carolina, Prior to the Mid-Currituck Bridge Construction, 2011-18”. These datasets contain information on analytical constituents measured in samples, surface-water environmental and quality-assurance sample results, bed-sediment environmental and quality-assurance sample results, phytoplankton...

Water, bed sediment, and invertebrate tissue were sampled in streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana (MT), as part of a long-term monitoring program within the Upper Clark Fork Basin. The sampling program was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to characterize aquatic resources in the Upper Clark Fork Basin and monitor trace elements associated with historical mining and smelting activities. Sampling sites were on the Clark Fork River and a subset of its tributaries. Water samples were collected periodically at 21 sites from October 2020 through September 2021. Bed-sediment and tissue samples were collected once at 13 sites in July 2021. Water-quality...

Patrick Bayou, a section of the Houston Ship Channel near Deer Park, Texas, has accumulated permitted industrial wastewater discharges, municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent, and stormwater runoff from adjacent industrial facilities and nearby urban and residential areas. These discharges are suspected to be the primary sources of the sediment contamination in the Patrick Bayou section of the Houston Ship Channel near Deer Park, Texas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed Patrick Bayou on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List because of sediment contamination detected in the wetlands bordering Patrick Bayou, posing a threat to downstream fisheries. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS),...

Sampling sites were on the Clark Fork River and a subset of its tributaries. Water samples were collected periodically at 22 sites from October 2019 through September 2020. Bed-sediment and tissue samples were collected once at 12 sites during July 2020. Water-quality data included concentrations...

This product summarizes the collection and analysis of bed material sample grain size distribution collected from the Iron Gate, Copco, and J.C. Boyle Reservoirs located in Northern California and Southern Oregon on the Klamath River. Samples were collected on June 16, 2020 from cores (less than 1m depth) and processed for the full size distribution.

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This spatial data layer is a cell-based Raster model characterizing the contribution of phosphorus (P) to streams from weathering and erosion of surficial geologic materials for the conterminous United States, and has been created as part of the SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes) water-quality model implementation. SPARROW provides estimates of total nitrogen and phosphorus load in surface waters from...
Mining activities in the Blue River Basin, Summit County, Colorado, have affected the trace- element chemistry and biota along French Gulch and the Blue River. Elevated concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were present in the bed and suspended sediments. Bed sediment trace-element concentrations were high in the streams in and near mining activities in the basin and remained high as water flowed into Dillon Reservoir about 3.5 km downstream. Bed-sediment ( < 63 mm) data were useful in assessing the distribution of trace elements in the basin. Suspended-sediment measurements provided information as to the transport of the trace elements. Filtered ( < 0.45 mm) water- column trace-element concentrations were orders...
