In cooperation with state and county agencies, including the Chester County Water Resources Authority (CCWRA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has collected discrete stream samples for analysis of chloride concentrations at three real-time streamflow and water-quality monitoring (specific conductance) stations located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Data were collected from 2010-2023 at these stations for the application of predicting chloride concentrations using real-time continuous specific conductance and streamflow data. Regression equations were developed by relating discrete-sample chloride and discrete specific conductance data, as well as continuous streamflow data. Regression equations included possible...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release is a spreadsheet containing soil-profile measurements of ambient spring and fall water-potential and water-content conditions, and physical and chemical properties for four mine sites, Mohave County, Arizona, April and November 2018. The four mines sampled in both April and November were Kanab North (native soil and reclaimed soil), EZ2 (native soil), Arizona 1 (native soil), and Pinenut (native soil). These data were collected to characterize soil hydrologic conditions and properties in support of research being done to quantify water and metals transport in shallow soils at four semi-arid uranium mine sites at various stages of production on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project was to determine how river water quality has changed over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable monitoring has been conducted by the USGS on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Outside of the NAWQA project, the USGS and other Federal, State, and local agencies also have collected long-term water-quality data to support their own assessments of changing water quality. In 2017, data from these multiple sources were combined to support one of the most comprehensive assessments...
This data release provides water-quality data collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) during 1972 through 2020. This data release includes a discrete water-quality concentration dataset (total dissolved solids, chloride, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, nitrate plus nitrite, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, total suspended solids, and fecal coliform bacteria densities) used for characterization of water-quality trends in the Kansas River. This data release also includes two datasets containing annual flow-normalized and low-flow water-quality concentrations and loads (total dissolved solids, chloride, ammonia, dissolved...

Description of Work The work completed for this template will provide the following information: 1) Generate acute and chronic toxicity data for freshwater mussels and snails to enhance the protection of listed/endangered species in the GL basin; 2) Refine methods and conduct acute and chronic toxicity tests on amphibians; 3) Develop and test methods for conducting chronic toxicity tests for mayflies.

Water-quality data were collected by the Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB) from tributaries in the Scituate Reservoir drainage area, October 2014 through September 2015 (water year 2015). These data were used to calculate instantaneous loads and yields of constituents in a report by the U.S. Geological Survey. Water-quality samples were collected by the PWSB either monthly or quarterly at fixed stations on 36 tributaries in the Scituate Reservoir drainage area. Water-quality samples were collected following a strict sampling schedule so that water-quality samples would be representative of various weather conditions. Samples were analyzed at the PWSB water-quality laboratory at the P.J. Holton Water Purification...

This data set includes input data for the development of regression models to predict chloride from specific conductance (SC) data at 56 U. S. Geological Survey water quality monitoring stations in the eastern United States. Each site has 20 or more simultaneous observations of SC and chloride. Data were downloaded from the National Water Information System (NWIS) using the R package dataRetrieval. Datasets for each site were evaluated and outliers were removed prior to the development of the regression model. This file contains only the final input dataset for the regression models. Please refer to Moore and others (in review) for more details. Moore, J., R. Fanelli, and A. Sekellick. In review. High-frequency...
These data were compiled to quantify the role of Lake Powell in modulating salinity and reducing overall salt flux from the Upper Colorado River Basin downstream. In addition, these data were used to infer summertime calcite precipitation in Lake Powell (the major proposed sink for salt within the system). The Lake Powell Calcium Magnesium data contains summertime surface water calcium and magnesium concentrations along three transects that span the two major inflows to Lake Powell and the region of Lake Powell closest to the dam. The Modeled Salinity data was used to compare measured total dissolved solid concentrations at Lees Ferry to the instantaneous flow-weighted concentration of total dissolved solid entering...
This child item dataset contains 22,871 records of chloride concentration in groundwater across Kings, Queens, and Nassau Counties in Long Island, New York. Compiled records span the period from 1889 to 2022. Records are provided in a shapefile of point data compiled from several sources detailed in the metadata. Chloride isolines (isochlors) are also included as a shapefile of interpolated point data representing average conditions over 11 twenty-year time periods in the two main Long Island aquifer complexes (Upper glacial-Jameco-Magothy and North Shore-Lloyd). Interpolation methods are discussed in Stumm and others (2024). These data are accessible as an online webmap: https://ny.water.usgs.gov/maps/lisustainabilityphase1viewer/

Chloride deicers have been applied by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to Interstate-5 (I-5) from the Oregon-California border north to mile marker 10 for several years in the high-elevation area known as the Siskiyou Pass. Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are applied to keep the interstate safe for drivers and allow for efficient transport of goods and people through adverse weather conditions, particularly snow and ice. The USGS entered into a cooperative agreement with ODOT to research the effects of the application of these chloride deicers in the Carter Creek and Wall Creek watersheds within the Siskiyou Pass. Hydrologic and meteorological data were collected within the study...

Changes in water corrosivity from 84 river sites were investigated using long-term (1962 – 2016) data sets. Corrosive waters, often having elevated chloride (Cl) concentrations, can lead to metal leaching and promote corrosion in water distribution systems. Two different indices, the Chloride-Sulfate Mass Ratio (CSMR) and the Larson Ratio (LR), are commonly used to indicate the potential to promote corrosion in water distribution systems, with high values indicating an increase in the potential to promote corrosion. Though changes in treatment approaches at drinking water facilities are known to affect the corrosion indices, there is little information regarding how changes in the ionic composition of source waters...

Description of Work The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) was established to accelerate ecosystem restoration in the Great Lakes by confronting the most serious threats to the region, such as nonpoint source pollution, toxic sediments, and invasive species. Three Priority Watersheds have been targeted by the Regional Working Group's Phosphorus Reduction Work Group (Fox/Green Bay, Saginaw, and Maumee) and are characterized by having a high density of agricultural land use and have ecosystem impairments that have been clearly identified. Within the Maumee River Priority Watersheds, monitoring is being conducted at the sub-watershed, edge-of-field, and subsurface-tile scale. The edge-of-field and subsurface-tile...
