Sediment particles can strongly bind metals, effectively repartitioning them from solution to a solid phase. As a result, sediments may accumulate and retain metals released to an aquatic environment. Sediment cores provide a historical record of metal inputs that can reveal anthropogenic influences (Förstner and Wittmann, 1979). Specifically, studies of sediment cores in San Francisco Bay chronicled metal inputs and suggested that legacy contamination can remain a chronic source of metals to the system owing to sediment mixing and redistribution (Hornberger and others, 1999; Van Geen and Luoma, 1999). Metals in sediments also indicate exposure levels to benthic animals through contact with, and ingestion of, bottom...

This page contains (a) bulk synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectra; (b) microbeam synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence maps and spectra; and (c) microbeam Raman spectra (and corresponding optical images). These data were used to understand chromium, iron, and manganese valence and mineral residence in natural and synthetic mineral mixtures used in laboratory experiments designed to simulate dynamic conditions in an engineered aquifer system [see Izbicki and Groover (2018) and Miller and others (2020)].

This child page contains: (a) qualitative compositional data for 3 elements (chromium, manganese, and iron) as determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry using a portable instrument (“pXRF”) mounted in a test stand in the laboratory and (b) quantitative compositional data for up to 60 elements (some not reported quantitatively) determined by chemical digestion (sodium peroxide fusion) followed by inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission or inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and (c) quantitative total organic carbon data. The pXRF data collected after July 22, 2019 presented here is subject to secondary data review as required by the Energy and Minerals Mission Area Quality Management System (EMMA...

This child page contains qualitative multi-element compositional data from scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry. The data are in the form of element maps and normalized compositional data from spots or areas. These qualitative data are accompanied by backscattered electron images and, in some cases, corresponding optical images. Quantitative measurement of features in a subset of the optical images is also presented. Data collected after July 22, 2019 are subject to secondary data review as required by the Energy and Minerals Mission Area Quality Management System (EMMA QMS). As this process is not yet complete, data collected after July 22, 2019 must be considered preliminary or provisional...

This data release contains macro and microscale datasets describing the abundance, valence states, and mineral residence(s) of chromium, iron, and manganese in natural and synthetic mineral mixtures used in laboratory experiments designed to simulate dynamic conditions in an engineered aquifer system [see Izbicki and Groover (2018) and Miller and others (2020)]. The landing page contains primary metadata about this release and an overview "sample information" table containing descriptions of samples, their analyses, and their methods of preparation and preservation. As there is not a one-to-one correlation between samples and types of analyses performed, the overview table is an important navigation tool to locate...
