Biomass remains a key energy source for several billion people living in developing countries, and the production of liquid biofuels for transportation is growing rapidly. However, both traditional biomass energy and crop-based biofuels technologies have negative environmental and social impacts. The overall research challenge for bioenergy is to develop the technologies to produce useful products at low costs while minimizing the use of scarce resources such as arable land and water. There are unconventional fuels that may serve as near term major replacements for conventional mineral oil and natural gas. These include fuels from oil shale and bitumen, liquid fuels from coal, methane from methane hydrates, biofuels and the secondary fuel hydrogen. Here, these fuels will be reviewed as to their presumable stocks and life cycle wastes, emissions and inputs of natural resources. The pricing of particular fuels, such as electricity, gas and oil, should be considered in terms of the development of pricing policies for the energy sector as a whole. The pursuit of an efficient allocation of resources will require that energy prices are related to their marginal costs. This simple prescription may have to be modified to allow for the achievement of other objectives, such as profitability and income distribution.

This product provides a metric of percentage increase in the number of fires expected per year under various climate change scenarios in both the dry and wet season compared to a 1996-2016 baseline at a per-pixel basis for the main Hawaiian Islands (excluding Niʻihau) at 30 m x 30 m resolution. Future climate scenarios include statistically and dynamically downscaled RCP 8.5 in the year 2100 in addition to statistically downscaled RCP 8.5 in the year 2050. This is a modeled data product trained using historical fire perimeters, ignition density, mean annual temperature, mean annual soil moisture, historical rainfall data , and remotely sensed vegetation cover.

In 1982-1983, a 70 ha energy forest project was established in an arable landscape in southern Sweden. Many aspects of the energy forest system were investigated. This paper reports mainly on the aesthetic impacts of the project at a landscape level. One effect is an increasing variation in the views and the aesthetic values of the arable land. The Salix crops introduce new colours into the arable landscape. The green colour of the Salix fields lasts longer in the autumn. Also, from year to year a spatial Variation appears. U.S Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts during the time periods of September 5 - 14, 2018, November 8 - 13, 2018, June 18 - 27, 2019, July 30 - August 8, 2019, September 13 - 19, 2019, and June 23 - July 1, 2020. These efforts used a combination of technologies to map twenty burned and twelve unburned forest plots at eleven sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This product provides a metric of per-pixel fire risk for the main Hawaiian Islands (excluding Niʻihau) at 30 m x 30 m resolution. The product provides raw values of annual fire probability for the whole year, dry season and wet season as well as binned categorical fire risk values (Low, Moderate, High, Very High) for the same time frames. Categorical thresholds for fire risk are derived from probabilities observed at the time of historical fires in each county. This is a modeled data product trained using historical fire perimeters, ignition density, mean annual temperature, mean annual soil moisture, historical rainfall data , and remotely sensed vegetation cover.

To better inform fuel break planning and assessment, we developed a comprehensive spatial database of known existing fuel breaks from 1953 to 2018 throughout the western United States. Each fuel break is represented as a polygon in the database and is attributed with the date of installation, the treatment type employed, and the data source. The availability of these data promotes the development of a monitoring framework to track the maintenance and longevity of different treatment types, as well as record the use, conditions, and outcomes of suppression activities at specific fuel break locations. Soil gas methane and combustible gas concentrations collected from oil and gas well pad locations in Utah. Soil gas samples were measured on site and/or collected for later analysis as described in supporting documentation. Multiple sample locations around well head and depths within the soil profile are available for select sites. Supporting documents provide information of sample collection protocol and data quality assurance.

The purpose of this paper is to quantify climatic controls on the area burned by fire in different vegetation types in the Western United States. We demonstrate that wildfire area burned (WFAB) in the American West was controlled by climate during the 20th century (1916-2003). Persistent ecosystem-specific correlations between climate and WFAB are grouped by vegetation type (ecoprovinces). Most mountainous ecoprovinces exhibit strong year-of-fire relationships with low precipitation, low Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), and high temperature. Grass- and shrub-dominated ecoprovinces had positive relationships with antecedent precipitation or PDST. For 1977-2003, a few climate variables explain 33 to 87 percent...

Data are contained in a comma-separated spreadsheet files (.csv) that describe vegetation characteristics of high- and low-use areas, nest tree sites, and individual nest trees used by western gray squirrels in the North Cascades as determined through live-trapping and radiotelemetry at two study sites: Stehekin, and the southern Methow Valley (Squaw Creek drainage), Washington. Squirrels were live-trapped and radio-tracked from 2008-2011 for a University of Washington Ph.D. research project on western gray squirrel habitat selection.
