FY2023R6 SA (Science Applications), in cooperation with project collaborators and watershed stakeholders (watershed coordinators, Montana State University, MTDRC, EPA, conservation districts, TU) created the River Conditions Tool (RCT) to drive conservation actions via real-time stream gage data with predetermined aquatic, riverine, drought management science. This project expands upon the first version of the SGP-CHAT and create a more robust spatial planning tool (SPT) for directing conservation of the lesser prairie chicken (LPC). This tool is a critical component for agency conservation planning and it is a necessity that agencies delivering conservation for LPC work from the same source data for maximum benefit of the species and its surrounding ecosystem.

Bumble bee populations have decreased rapidly in the past 25 years resulting in the IUCN Red List identifying 12 species, more than 25% of all species in America north of Mexico, as species of conservation concern. The range-wide plan (RWP) has been developed in response to concerns about lesser prairie-chicken (LPC) habitat threats which may be impacting LPC populations, and the proposed listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Future climate change may significantly alter the distributions of many plant taxa. The effects of climate change may be particularly large in mountainous regions where climate can vary significantly with elevation. While we assessed the vulnerability of a number of different wildlife and plant species to climate change, none of those species exhibited high vulnerability to changes projected for the region and there was limited differentiation in vulnerability between the individual species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has been petitioned to list the regal fritillary butterfly under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) with decision due in FY 2022. Population and species viability are directly related to genetic diversity, yet direct measures of genetic diversity are rare for any species, let alone a species of conservation concern. Previous research revealed regal fritillary populations show a reduction in genetic diversity from west to east, as potential habitat patches become smaller and more isolated. A decline in habitat quality and quantity in the southern Great Plains is a driving factor in population declines of endemic grassland birds, insects, and native plants. Native grassland species face habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as habitat degradation from pesticide use, invasive species, woody encroachment, disease, and climate change. Few baseline datasets exist to compare long term change over time from both local and landscape (ecoregion) levels. These datasets could then be used in conjunction with conservation decisions by local entities as well as training datasets for future modeling efforts.
