The Yukon North Slope is an arctic “hot spot” of climate change-induced effects with profound significance for the Inuvialuit and the larger region. In 1984, the Inuvialuit entered into a land claim agreement – the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) – with the governments of Canada, Yukon and Northwest Territories. Maintaining the native prairie lands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), which provide an important habitat for declining grassland species, requires anticipating the effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and climate change on the region’s vegetation. Specifically, climate change threatens NGP grasslands by increasing the potential encroachment of native woody species into areas where they were previously only present in minor numbers. This project used a dynamic vegetation model to simulate vegetation type (grassland, shrubland, woodland, and forest) for the NGP for a range of projected future climates and relevant management scenarios. The WBPHS is conducted by flying an aircraft along a set of segment lines. (One or more contiguous segments comprise a transect.) The geographic coordinates in WBPHS_Segment_Endpoints.csv represent the beginning and ending points of the segment lines in Alaska and Old Crow Flats (Yukon Territory) strata 1-12. The point coordinates in this file have been incorporated into various products (e.g., a GPS waypoints file) to aid in survey-flight navigation. In many areas surveyed during the North American WBPHS, ground surveys are conducted in conjunction with the aerial surveys to derive annual visibility correction factors (VCFs) for the aerial survey crews, which are used during analyses to adjust for detection bias. Due to the remoteness of strata 1–12, ground surveys are not conducted there. Instead, a set of fixed VCFs by species and basic habitat type (strata 1–7 = boreal forest; strata 8–11 = tundra; stratum 12) are used. WBPHS_Stratum_Areas.csv is a table that lists the area measurements (in square miles) for strata 1-12, as measured and adopted by survey designers in 1974. These measurements are used by MBM-AK in analyses to produce bird abundance estimates by species and stratum.

A three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (3D HFM) of the westernmost western Snake River Plain (WSRP) aquifer system was prepared to represent the subsurface distribution and thickness of four hydrogeologic units. The primary source of data for the 3D HFM was lithologic data from a total of 291 well-driller reports. These data were then processed using Rockware Rockworks17 three-dimensional modeling software. This dataset consists of five comma-delineated CSV files containing well information: location, lithology, well construction, aquifer, and comments. It is one of three related datasets.

The NABat sampling frame is a grid-based finite-area frame spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico consisting of N total number of 10- by 10-km (100-km2) grid cell sample units for the continental United States, Canada, and Alaska and 5- by 5-km (25km2) for Hawaii and Puerto Rico. This grain size is biologically appropriate given the scale of movement of most bat species, which routinely travel many kilometers each night between roosts and foraging areas and along foraging routes. In spring and summer 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Gas Hydrates Project conducted two cruises aboard the research vessel Hugh R. Sharp to explore the geology, chemistry, ecology, physics, and oceanography of sea-floor methane seeps and water column gas plumes on the northern U.S. Atlantic margin between the Baltimore and Keller Canyons. The natural resiliency of the New Jersey barrier island system, and the efficacy of management efforts to reduce vulnerability, depends on the ability of the system to recover and maintain equilibrium in response to storms and persistent coastal change. In 2004, about 90 migrating elk drowned after attempting to cross thin ice on the Mores Creek arm of Lucky Peak Lake upstream of the Highway 21 bridge. To better understand the depths over a range of reservoir pool elevations in the Mores Creek Arm, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, conducted high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetric surveys on the Mores Creek arm on Lucky Peak Lake. This sampling frame is a set of grid-based finite-area frames spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The grid for the United States is broken into individual grids for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Alaska is combined with Canada into a single grid. Each country/state/territory extent consists of four nested sampling grids at 50x50km, 10x10km, 5x5km, and 1x1km resolutions.
