This Data Release consists of broadband ground motion simulations for 12 California region earthquakes. The ground motion simulations were done as part of a validation study that is described in more detail in Graves (2022). These simulations were computed using a hybrid simulation methodology (hereafter referred to as GP). The GP approach is a hybrid in that separate responses are computed for the low- and high-frequency components, which are then summed together to produce the full broadband response. This three-dimensional (3D) seismic velocity model includes a detailed domain covering the greater San Francisco Bay urban region and a regional domain at a coarser resolution covering a larger region. Version 21.0 is a re-release of v08.3.0 in a new storage scheme. The model was constructed by assigning elastic properties (density, Vp, Vs, Qp, and Qs) to grids of points based on the geologic unit and depth from the ground surface. The model is stored in HDF5 files using the GeoModelGrids (https://geomodelgrids.readthedocs.io) storage scheme (see the README.md file for an overview). Earthquake stress drop is a critical parameter for estimating seismic hazard. This parameter can have a strong effect on ground motion amplitudes above ~1Hz and is especially important in Oklahoma and Kansas where earthquake rates have increased sharply since 2008. We estimate stress drops for 1121 earthquakes greater than ~M3 in and near the conterminous United States using spectral ratios between collocated events at given stations. We find that the average stress drop for the few eastern United States (EUS, 26–340 Bars) tectonic main shocks studied, which tend to be deeper thrusting events with few foreshocks and aftershocks, is about three times greater than tectonic main shocks in the western United States...

In May 2017, we acquired high-resolution seismic profiles near three dam sites (Strathcona, Laodre and John Hart dams) located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Our goal was to measure seismic velocities (particularly Vs) at each dam site using body and surface waves. The data were analyzed using refraction tomography and multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW), especially in the upper 30 m of the subsurface. This dataset consists of over 800 field observations of ground failure (landslides, lateral spreading, and liquefaction) and other damage triggered by the 2019-2020 Puerto Rico earthquake sequence. The sequence started with a M4.7 earthquake on 28 December 2019, followed by many more earthquakes, including 15 larger than M5 (as of 7 July 2020). The M6.4 mainshock, which is thought to have triggered much of the observed ground failure, occurred on 7 January 2020. This data release includes geochronological data for the Airport East trench site (40.795359°, -111.950438°) on the Taylorsville fault of the West Valley fault zone (WVFZ). The WVFZ comprises intrabasin faults in the hanging wall of the Wasatch fault zone in the northern part of Salt Lake Valley, Utah. Samples for radiocarbon and luminescence dating were collected from two paleoseismic trenches in August–September 2015. The earthquake catalog was generated in August 2018 using the standard National Seismic Hazard Model methodology (Mueller, 2019) for the central and eastern United States. Pre-existing catalogs were merged, duplicate records were removed, the catalog was declustered, and induced earthquakes were removed. The final catalog contains 6802 records, M2.5–7.8, and extends from 1568 through July 2018.

In November 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired high-resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the surface trace of the West Napa Fault zone at Saintsbury Winery in Napa, California. We acquired seismic reflection, refraction, and guided-wave data along a 115-m-long profile across the known surface rupture zone of the West Napa Fault zone. To acquire the reflection and refraction data, we co-located shots and geophones, spaced every meter along the profile. The 2023 50-State National Seimsic Hazard Model (NSHM) Update includes an update to the NSHMs for the conterminous U.S (CONUS, last updated in 2018), Alaska (AK, last updated in 2007), and Hawaii (last updated in 2001).
