Treated effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains contaminants not fully removed during the treatment process and that may pose environmental health risks when discharged to surface waters. This data release presents inputs for and results from a wastewater reuse model that used data compiled from several sources to calculate the following estimates for each non-tidal, non-coastline, initialized National Hydrography Dataset Version 2.1 (NHDPlus V2) stream segment in the Potomac River watershed: (1) accumulated wastewater as a percent of total streamflow (ACCWW%); and (2) predicted environmental concentrations (PECs, in micrograms per liter) of 69 municipal effluent-derived contaminants. ACCWW% values...

SARS-CoV-2 Data from National Wastewater Surveillance System Surge Capacity Sampling, September 2021
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is used to determine the consumption of, or exposure to, chemicals or pathogens in human populations, and is conducted by collecting representative samples of untreated wastewater (influent) to quantify pathogens shed in the population served by the sampled wastewater system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other agencies throughout the federal government, initiated the National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to conduct WBE using analytical methods for the collection and analysis of SARS-CoV-2...
Background Discharges from non-point sources, municipal and industrial point sources, and combined sewage overflows over the last century resulted in elevated levels of heavy metals, conventional pollutants, phosphorus, and toxic organic contaminants in water and sediments of the Lower Genesee River and Rochester Embayment. As a result, the zooplankton and phytoplankton or “plankton” communities were designated as one of fourteen Beneficial Use Impairments (BUI); i.e., the resource was either impaired or in need of assessment in the Rochester Embayment Area of Concern (AOC). The Rochester Embayment Remedial Action Committee (RAC) was formed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)...
A wastewater reuse model was applied to the Upper Colorado River basin to assess the percent of accumulated wastewater (ACCWW%) from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in each initialized (that is, has an assigned hydrosequence number for flow-routing) National Hydrography Dataset Version 2.1 (NHDPlus V2.1) stream segment. Model inputs included (1) NHDPlus V2.1 stream geometry and hydrologic information (Table 1); (2) WWTP information, provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Table 2), include average daily effluent discharges and outfall locations. Outfall locations were linked to the corresponding NHDPlus V2.1 stream segment receiving the effluent prior to calculating ACCWW%....

Concerns exist that the degradation of water quality in Salado Creek near Salado, Texas could adversely affect recreational uses and harm salamander populations that live in and near springs that discharge into the stream. Salado is part of the rapidly growing Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area; land-use changes in the Salado Creek watershed could adversely affect water quality in Salado Creek. Streamflow in Salado Creek is generally derived from the Salado Springs complex during low-flow conditions (dry weather) and from the springs and surface runoff during high-flow conditions (wet weather). A better understanding of the types of waste (human, animal, or both) that may be entering the stream and springs is needed...
Problem : Occurrence and persistence of emerging contaminants in groundwater flow in Suffolk County, New York Objectives: This project will monitor groundwater from selected SCWA supply wells for compounds indicative of anthropogenic sources, which are of increasing public concern. Approach: Groundwater-flow information, well-construction details, and distance from treated wastewater (including municipal and industrial) discharge areas will be used to select 12 wells that are along the paths of groundwater flow from discharge sites. Groundwater samples will be analyzed for roughly 100 common organic contaminants—including pharmaceuticals, hormones, and wastewater indicators—that could potentially pass through...

The Pee Dee and Cape Fear River Basins in North Carolina and South Carolina were chosen as a focus area study (FAS) for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Census (NWC) in 2016. The objective of the NWC is to place technical information and tools in the hands of stake holders so that they can make decisions on water availability. The USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center, comprised of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, conducted a 3-year study of water use and availability to provide information related to the competing societal and ecological water needs in the Southeastern Atlantic Coastal Basins of the Carolinas. One task to meet this objective was compiling water withdrawal and return...

Background The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Village of Patchogue and the New York Department of State, collected water-quality samples from 10 shallow wells within the village to document the effects of onsite wastewater disposal on groundwater discharging into the Patchogue River. The onsite disposal of wastewater within the Patchogue River basin - a riverine estuary that discharges into Great South Bay, Suffolk County, Long Island, NY - has adversely affected water quality and aquatic habitats within both the tidal and non-tidal portions of the river. Of particular concern are increased loads of nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and phosphorus) to the shallow groundwater system which...
