The surface water water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) or the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. National Water-Quality Monitoring Council, 2015, Water Quality Portal: National Water-Quality Monitoring Council,...

Water, bed sediment, and biota were sampled in selected streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana, as part of a monitoring program in the upper Clark Fork Basin of western Montana. The sampling program was led by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Water, bed sediment, and invertebrate tissue were sampled in streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana, as part of a monitoring program in the Clark Fork Basin. The sampling program was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to characterize aquatic resources in the Clark Fork Basin and monitor trace elements associated with historical mining and smelting activities. Sampling sites were on the Clark Fork River and a subset of its tributaries. Water samples were collected periodically at 22 sites from October 2019 through September 2020. Bed-sediment and tissue samples were collected once at 12 sites during July 2020. Water-quality data included concentrations...

These produced datasets include water-quality and quality assurance results collected by the USGS and other entities from 1952 to 2016 near the City of Poplar as well as throughout the East Poplar oil field, leachate results collected from drilling core within the Cretaceous Bearpaw Formation and Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) fertilizer results collected by the USGS in 2012. The handling and disposal of the brine has resulted in contamination of not only the shallow aquifers in the East Poplar oil field, but also the Poplar River (Thamke and Craigg, 1997; Thamke and Smith, 2014). The shallow aquifers are the only available source of potable groundwater in the area, and had provided water for more than 100 residents...
